    One thing I've done is shift my movement keys one to the right. That allows my pinky to get in on the keybind action. On my mage it allows me to use my pinky for (A) Ice Block and (Z) Will of the Forsaken. This is the only game I do that on so I have to remember to put my hands in the right place when I put it on the keyboard. When I come back to the game after a while off, the number of times I've Ice Blocked accidentally is astounding. Great video PRat.

    If you hold down the right mouse button like you do anyway, A and D will make you strafe even if they're bound to turn ;) So if you're like me and can't live without turn binds, you don't have to (even though they're useless).
    The only problem is with addons like vuh'do when you have click actions on a unit frame assigned to spell casts, you can't strafe and clickcast (i.e. HoTs) at the same time, but in classic, there are imho no mechanics that would require that.

    • @k1mpman
      @k1mpman Před 5 lety

      i think the point is that turning the camera is not as efficient with the keys because, as you say, rmb is used a lot which is a easy way to turn camera and if you're not holding down rmb, you're probably doing something more important than to turn the camera(finding a target to heal for example). In this situation, if you need to move your character you only have W as a viable option unless you want to backpeddle if you haven't rebound your A+D key. If you're standing in fire, too close to onyxias tail or need to quickly move in the midst of targeting someone for a heal, the turn camera with A+D is the opposite of helpful. Obviously everyone needs to play the way which benefits them so nobody should dictate how you play, but personally I cannot see how turning the camera with a+d would be beneficial rather than using rmb.

    • @jonpaul6948
      @jonpaul6948 Před 5 lety

      You cannot use your mouse to target when doing this, or even see the cursor on the screen, or click some non-essential skill you can't be bothered to keybind. It's not a substitution for having strafe bound, as there is literally no situation in WoW where turning with the keyboard is better than using your mouse. You lose NOTHING by binding strafe, and lose a couple of arguably important things when using rightclick exclusively. Doing something for years doesn't mean you've been doing it correctly.

    • @Punkrat

    @tompowell1920 Před 5 lety +1

    Nice video :) I think you explained the benefit in changing your A and D keys rather well, if people want to continue using right-click resulting in keyboard turning then let them, they are holding themselves back. Timing is everything in pvp and some classes require more binds than the next and you can't always be holding right-click to strafe if you're trying to maximise survivability and damage output as it limits how much you can move your camera around to spot incoming enemies because it will change your direction.

    • @tompowell1920
      @tompowell1920 Před 5 lety

      That split second of keyboard turning to turn your camera and initiate auto-run could be the difference for you surviving as it might alter that hunter viper stinging/slowing you or that warrior being in range to hamstring you etc.

    I change Q, E to be hotkeys, but I also change z, x, c, v - and then bind char panal to be shift+c while adding in ctrl+f (generally what I use for mounting), ctrl+r, shift+f, shift+r and your normal ctrl/shift # hotkeys. That generally gives me more than enough hotkeys to quickly access all my main spells / abilities. If i'm playing hunter, I make scroll up pet attack, scroll down pet follow and just change zoom to ctrl+scroll.

    So, I don't understand the emphasis on jumping while kiting. I know it continues your momentum through the jump, but it's the same distance as just strafing and you can control the camera the same way without jumping.
    However, you can't complete your auto attack while you're in the air.

    • @atorrance
      @atorrance Před 5 lety

      Ya I agree. I don’t think the jumping is really needing for auto shots unless you just use it as a built in timer that happens to sync up with your bow speed. It makes a ton of sense for spell casters tho. Classic shaman move is to jump while in ghost wolf to get the speed/momentum and then as your in the air cast a totem or shock or something. So really useful for instant spells.

    • @Ryan_hey
      @Ryan_hey Před 5 lety +1

      No, it's not required, but it's easier. The time that it takes to perform 1 jump is usually the minimum amount of time between most auto-attacks, so it's a much easier way to "measure" rather than trying to walk-strafe perfectly each time. Of course, with a slower weapon, then it you're going to have to walk-strafe regardless.

    • @Marcelo-0000
      @Marcelo-0000 Před 5 lety +1

      Imo it makes way easier for hunters to time the auto shot since it requires you to stand still, I feel that coming back from a jump makes your character to be still easier than stop pressing the movement key.

    • @zachwithnok
      @zachwithnok Před 5 lety +2

      @@Marcelo-0000 That gap in time between your jump and your weapon swing time will vary greatly over time though.
      Basically, if 1 jump takes 1.5 seconds, but your swing timer is 2.6 you either have to wait for the difference of 1.1 seconds or lose .4 seconds to do a second jump. If you run and stop though, you can time this up exactly.

    1 thing: don't (always) strafe-kite while tanking in raids! Just move backwards, if you move to fast away from your healers you can easily get out of range of their heals... Example is Onyxia, you run in, draw aggro and pull Onyxia to the back of the room, everyone runs after you but healers have to stop running to heal you, if you run to fast, you can easily run out of range... Happened to me...

    I have been using RDFG to walk for over 10 years now. It allows me to use my little finger on W,S,Q,A and TAB without impairing my movement, which I do with all the other fingers (if you include jump on SPACE). I see only advantages over WASD, so I really don't get why everybody uses that. I recommend trying something else, it might stick just like it did for me.

    • @garymills390
      @garymills390 Před 5 lety

      Interesting concept, but what button do you use for self-target? I've experimented with ESDF because my thumb can still slide to alt. I just tried RDFG after your comment and I find it a bit of a stretch

    • @jonpaul6948
      @jonpaul6948 Před 5 lety

      @@garymills390 Yeah, Ctrl is an essential keybind modifier, as is Alt for me. RDFG messes up the positioning on both of those keys, making Ctrl an impossible stretch and Alt a slightly irritating roll of the thumb under my hand. The few keys you gain from it pale in comparison to the easily hit Ctrl and Alt modified number keys, so Im gonna stick with what works.

    Don't most people just hold the right mouse button and use the turn left/right keys to strafe? I've always unbound Q and E to use them for spells instead.

    • @Jmdwolfy161
      @Jmdwolfy161 Před 5 lety +1

      This, there's no reason to bind a and d to strafe when you're using your right click all the time anyway. That way you still have turning on the same keys as strafe technically.

    #showtooltip Shadow Bolt
    /cast [nomodifier,target=target] Shadow Bolt
    /cast [mod:alt,target=mouseover] Shadow bolt
    Change the spell as needed, or alt to shift/ctrl, whichever you prefer.
    This will cast shadow bolt on your target, or your mouse over target, if alt clicked. Tested on stress test.
    For pet classes, you can also
    #showtooltip Shadow Bolt
    /petattack [nomodifier,target=target]
    /petattack [mod:alt,target=mouseover]

    I have three additions to the list. 1. Learn how to be prepared for a dungeon raid by bringing needed mats/pots/food etc as well as showing up to the location before hand (unless you have a lock and friends to summon you). 2. Learn to roll for loot you only need and be willing to bypass some others need more. Unless you are a hunter then need on everything. 3. Learn to CC, and not break the CC.
    I would add not pulling for the tank but threat management covers that.

    Regarding mouseover macros you mentioned in the end of the video. Mouseover works fine in classic. Also worked on private servers 1.12.1. I basically put all my ranged skills as mouseovers when I played on private servers. Just find it more fun and smooth. Only trouble is the lack of macro slots. Wasn't a problem on private servers because of the addon supermacro which gave you something like 30 extra slots. For classic though that addon is not going to get converted to best bet for mouseover is to just use it for a few skills otherwise you will run out of slots.

    You didn’t touch on the most important part of strafe kiting it’s actually most important for melee during leveling - you get dazed, no parry, and Crit easier from behind. Strafe kiting as melee keeps you facing forward if you do it right keeping your shield block, parry and such capable of decreasing damage. You can kite mobs this way to other mobs taking the least amount of damage possible.

  • @Yzeyr

    Please explain to me what's the difference between having keybound strafe or not? If you have to hold right click anyway you're strafing with turn left and turn right anyway? No difference in kiting

  • @autobowl
