In Chile is very common to name 1000 pesos as "1 luca", so 20.000 would be "20 lucas". Also 100 pesos are "1 gamba". I hope that this slang to be usefull for foreign people cause we speak with many of this words hahaha
You forgot the "quina", used for the 500 pesos coin

By the way, the reason for the lower Notes being polymer is because smaller notes are used more and gets worn down really fast so they make it more durable and it’s cheaper for the government not to produce more notes when those notes run down
The chilean bills are so beautiful and modern if you compare with the currency of other countries.

I really liked the Recoleta area around the Patronato metro station...lots of stuff going on around there...but lots of other areas, too...just so much life going on out on the streets. I always tend to prefer areas where car culture takes a backseat to pedestrian traffic, and how walkable an area is has a lot to do with how much I like it...that being said...holy cow, there is some traffic in Chile!
Loved the video. I enjoyed your perspective of our currency. I understand the humor you added when noting the people from the banknotes (I found that comparison to Peter Cushing hilllarious). Living in the states made me understand how you look at things and that’s why I didn’t feel offended by those comparisons! Most of the people on the bills is famous, and fought on wars which the sole exception of Gabriela Mistral. Note that the largest bill is the 20k one.

We had a wonderful experience in Santiago! I guess I shouldn't be surprised that the 20.000 peso note is the largest bank note; here in the USA the treasury used to print $500, $1000, and $10,000 bills, but that was some decades ago...nowadays, the largest bill printed in the USA is the $100.

When you have the 10 000 and 20 000 peso bills it's very useful to use them when you are going to pay a restaurant bill or buy cheaper stuff at big stores (malls or supermarkets) so you get change back. It's how we Chileans use them, specially in other cities that don't have the bip system and need low amounts of cash to move around.
Also the 10 and 50 peso coins are SO VERY useful when you ride the bus in any other city that is not Santiago. And have some in your pockets to stop beggars from bothering you (NEVER take your wallet out for these people, just give them the change in your pockets).
I visited NYC last december and i had the same trouble as you did here in Chile lol. I never learned the coins, the shopper always counted them for me, it was embarrasing, and they indeed speak reaally fast.

No sé si lo dijeron, pero los distintos largos de los billetes chilenos es para que la gente no vidente (blind people) pueda reconocerlos.
yes, it's strange that here in the USA there is no way for a sight-impaired person to naturally differentiate the paper currencies; I believe that a common practice blind folks use in the USA is to fold different bills in different manners--lengthwise, in half, into thirds, etc--but a sighted person is needed to initially identify the bills.

thanks for the kind comment!--I liked this video, too, even if I do say so myself...I'm surprised I get a little flack for this video -- some folks seem to take offence at my comparisons to the people on the money to people in current popular culture, although I sure don't mean offence...my attempts at lightheartedness don't always translate well on the internet. CG and I have great memories of Santiago and we're always speculating on a return trip...we would have loved getting over to the coast and down to southern Chile
The name of each character appears on the bill, along with the character's face (but the writing is so tiny, so maybe is kinda difficult to read). Also, is important to mention that the guy who appears on the 20000 bill is the only one who is not chilean, but is important in Latinamerica, so, that's why he appears in a chilean bill

many things we did in Chile I found very affordable, some costs--especially in the Providencia area where we were house sitting--were very similar to the costs we had living in Seattle, USA

You all look and sound so happy. Am so happy for you. Question, considering the size of the bills, are their wallets different from US? did you have buy a different wallet type?
All extremely important and helpful info for traveling anywhere ourside of home country.
Our wallets are the same my dude, the 1000 pesos bill is around 80% of the length of a dollar bill and just slightly taller.
the money fit fine in my gringo wallet, and I actually like the "plasticky" type bills...very similar to Canadian currency in that respect.
Maybe you should know more of the history of our country. At least the people who are in the bills, for example Gabriela Mistral (who is in the 5000 pesos bill) was a famous educator, poet and chilean diplomatic. Was the first latinamerican woman in recieve a nobel. She wasn't a minor star wars caracter and i found that a little offensive. I don't want no be rude but at least try to not disrispect our cultural history. We will not offend yours. I reccomend to visit some of the museums in Santiago. Like the "Museo de la memoria y los derechos humanos" (memory and human rights museum), also the GAM (Gabriela Mistral cultural centre). Glad to have you both here in our country, i hope that you are enjoying it.
yes we loved Chile...I could learn much more about the history of Chile and even my own country, definitely no disrespect intended, I try to make videos with a bit of humor in them, but humor does not always translate very well on the internet, or even in person, since humor is a very subjective thing...but that being said, we found Santiago to be a wonderful experience

You need to know that we are very proud of the people that are in our currency. So don't make fun of it ! But do not worry c: just for you to know in the 5000 pesos you can find the picture of Gabriela Mistral a Chilean poet-diplomat, educator and humanist, like Pablo Neruda ( also, in the bills you can find the name of those people and you can look for more information on the internet). Most of them were important people who fought for our independency).
To answer your question with 50 pesos you can buy candies, ( like what we call "frugele" maybe one or 2 sweets or if you go to the south of Chile you can pay the bus with coins because we don't have the bip system )

On every bill the name of the person on it is printed right bellow the singatures near the center of the bill note. Although is small.

In the Philippines if you withdraw in cash machine
You can find it either 1000 pesos, 500pesos or 100 pesos
200.peso note are bit rare
50 and 20 are small to withdraw from cash machine but it's so useful
I was about to comment the people in the bills, just to find the short sight of my fellow peeps. ~The history in those characters is amazing, totally recomended ;) hope someone can tl you guys a bit of it (sobre todo si van al norte: iquique, arica, antofagasta, tmb podrian visitar la serena y Copiapó) aunque wn chile teni pa regodearte viajando jajaja

I was surprised to find this out! In the USA the largest bill currently printed is the $100. They used to print several bills even larger in the USA, but since larger sizes are so impractical, they discontinued and removed them from circulation.

Polymer banknotes are expensive in cost productions I don't know why 10 and 20 thousands pesos notes are printed in cotton paper
While 1-, 2-, 5 thousands pesos are in polymer banknotes
I guess because smaller denominated notes are often you than the bigger one
So that's why they use polymer cus polymer is 2x durable innovative and secured
It's hard to counterfeit polymer banknotes hard to tear it
If you forgotten them in laundry it's ok you can wipe it out then it's ok
You don't say the fact that some chileans say "luca" instead 1000 pesos.

relative to a many countries in Latin America, Chile is one of the more expensive locales, but having a long-term house sit there made the trip make sense for us, money-wise ...and I really enjoy Robert Vaughn, all his old shows remind me of being a kid

yes, I definitely have a USA-centered perspective! That's why traveling is so important, even just traveling within one's own country...seeing how people live and interact in different regions is an easy way to evolve one's perspective, which, with knowledge, can't help but evolve. Hopefully this video will be semi-entertaining and watchable and make folks visiting Chile more comfortable using the currency, which can be intimidating when learning the language.

1000 Chilean pesos appears Ignacio Carrera Pinto, who was an important Chilean soldier who died in the battle of La Concepción. He is an important hero in our history, along with his battalion composed of 77 men fought against 1500 Peruvian soldiers. the 77 Chilean soldiers died, but only 500 Peruvian soldiers survived

This is a lighthearted and hopefully informative video for travelers visiting Chile who would like an insight into what they can expect regarding the currency so that they might feel more comfortable using it when they arrive. No disrespect is intended. If you find my sophomoric attempts at humor miss the mark, then my wife mostly agrees with you, but sometimes I make her laugh...not quite 50% of the time, but maybe in the high 40's
