Thermalright have been at the top of their game for tower coolers for a long time, but they go way under the radar of most people-maybe because of distribution and advertising. I've had the Le Grand Macho RT in my build for the last few years, and it's phenomenal.
I started here for the nr200. Moved to the q58. You had sick videos for that. Now I’m headed to an NCASE and sure enough you have a killer video for that too. What a baller.
Couple of extra notes, just cross-posting for visibility. 1) I thought the SE-904-XT was available on Amazon for $30, but I must have confused it with an alternate model. It's only available on AliExpress right now, but ID distributes their coolers on Amazon so I would hope to see it there soon. At any rate, this cooler is still on the budget end of the spectrum. 2) As some have asked, YES, the rad panel works with the stock SS135 setup in the M1. It pushes against the cooler but the panel can still close and the screws have zero problems engaging. 3) Pic in the community tab - I was able to get an NF-A12x25 to fit in the SS135 without modding it, I had to shift it down a bit and stretch the cooler clips. However, this is strictly in YMMV territory since this cooler is not offset and sits fairly high, so some tall mobo heatsinks won't work for this, plus the rad panel will NOT work.
I'm very interested in the comparison between the Silver Soul 135 and the C14S, as the latter is the cooler I'm using with my M1, but I'm wondering if there's a better air cooling option.
How would tower coolers compare to the Noctua C14? Would be interested to also see some comparisons between the M1 and the Dan C4 when it comes out since they seem to be quite a similar category.
the c14 is a much better cooler 10-12c cooler than the u9s in most tests. you would just need decent airflow in the chassis to make sure your case is exhausting the hot air as downdraft coolers dont help "push" the hot air out of the case. like a tower cooler does.
Finallly, some Thermalright content :) If you can wait Thermalright will probably release black, white and white + RGB version of that cooler if there is enough demand. Just missing 135mm single tower coolers like AK 120 mini, TS 120 mini or their newest TA 120 EX MINI. For the NH-U9S, since it has offset to clear ram slots maybe you can flip the heatsink to add 1 more fan. Push/Pull config + 92mm intake fan might be worth it?
Indeed, Thermalright Silver Soul 135 now has its brother and sister, which are Black Soul 135 and Silver Soul 135 WHITE. Also there are tinier variants like Silver Soul 110 along with other color options. Thermalright does a really great job in the field of SFF coolers and chassis fans. It confuses me why they wouldn’t expand their business beyond the Greater China area.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS! Living in japan, for some reason the scythe mugen is an eye watering 150US while the Thermalright AK 90 is a simple $30! I've spent all day researching, and I think I found my next cooler.
Yeah I bought a silver arrow 130 last year. I was surprised how sharp it was and that it actually came with gloves so you don’t get cut. Now it’s just sitting in its box and I’ve since moved on to the C14S.
Was thinking about grabbing the 135 for a nr200p build with a 7700x. Seems like the perfect cooler for that case as well. The common coolers that fit in the nr200p like the fuma 2 or mugen 5 really don't fit when you use AMD due to the extra height of the IHS. At least with tempered glass installed.
Just ordered this. Currently have a C14s in my NCASE with a 3070ti FE. Do you think the Thermalright will be good enough to use with a TG panel for the Ncase? Have you done any testing with the C14s vs the Thermalright? Would love to use my TG window, but it seems unlikely with a C14s and a FE card.
Surprised you didn't test the thermalright assassin king mini. Maybe a future video? It would be cool if you did a roundup with all your small coolers vs nh u12s for reference.
Insta like for NCase M1 content! Like others have mentioned, does the fan bracket still fit on the side of the case with the thermal right installed? I believe it fit with the old silver arrow 130 and allowed for a nice rear intake, side exhaust airflow configs. Thanks for the detailed review!
Have you tried out the Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 (PA120)? It fits in the NR200 and beats out the Fuma 2. There's also the Thermalright Peerless Assassin SE that fits with the TG panel.
Would you consider comparing the M1 with other popular mainstream sff cases like the NR200? I almost got the M1 before the NR200 launched so I'm still wondering if I made the right choice.
Love your detailed review! How do you think this would compare to the ID cooling 224xt? I am about to build a nr200 so I don't have the clearance issue, would 224 be better? Thanks!
Yeah, if you have the clearance I'd go for a typical 120mm tower. The Thermalright does have 6 heatpipes but I'm not sure the value proposition is there if you don't have an M1 since you have clearance. As for the 224Xt, the stock fan on the 224xt isn't great, but you can swap it out later on, or just go for something like the Be Quite Pure Rock 2, Arctic Freezer 34, those are pretty good too and will be easier to get (depending on where you are) than the Thermalright.
I bought a Thermalright Silver Soul 135 on your recommendation but it was BAD. Installation was easy but thermals (Ryzen 5 5600X) were terrible, and the fan kept ramping up constantly. And it wasn't quiet - there was a constant grinding sound above 750 rpm. Had to send it back.
I looked back and forth between the Silver Soul 135, and Peerless Assassin 120. Couldn't really understand why the Silver Soul has less metal, and one less fan but it is more expensive than the Peerless Assassin. I looked deeper and closer online, some people show those Peerless Assassin 120 through unboxing video, and then I noticed the the PA 120 SE, the end point of the heatpipes showing through the fins, it is not well done, it is in uneven dome shape, you will notice it when you look very close. And for the PA 120 Normal version, it has a top hat to cover the heatpipes end, but it screams "THERMALRIGHT" right in your face. In the end, I bought the Silver Soul 135 (White version), it has a clean top hat that cover all those heatpipes domes nicely and doesn't have brand name on it, so I wouldn't have a problem in the future that I want to put a Noctua white fan for it, as it is a brandless white metal heatsink.
The even shorter dual tower Noctua D9L never seems to be compared to the U9S. Alpenfoehn has a new cheap (at least in Europe) 92mm tower cooler the Dolomit with at least one good review and compared well against the U9S. Might just work in the Sliger S610 with 128mm cooler height space.
That lack of comparison between the D9L and the U9S always struck me as weird, especially since the D9L is almost always cheaper, with the same noise spec and significantly less height.
Does the radiator mounting plate fit with the Thermalright cooler installed? Would be nice to have an exhaust or intake installed towards the front of the case.
Im interested to see how the thermalright silver soul 135 performs compared to a coolermaster hyper 212 evo v2. I currently have the 212 evo v2 in my nr200p cooling my 5600x, but its just a touch too tall in my opinion to use the glass side panel
For the 212 evo you can remove the pipe caps and it'll clear the TG panel. As far as cooling the thermal right would cool way better than 212evo. Single tower with 4 pipes vs dual tower with 6 pipes.
Now this is quality testing ... I have the Streacom DA2 which has similar restrictions with the M1 and apart from the venerable NH-C14S I haven't seen to this date a more capable air cooler for my 3900x .... until now and this new Thermalright .... It looks really close to performance ...
Yeah, it's a really interesting cooler. I'll compare directly against the C14S soon. The C14S has a limited implementation in the M1 so that's the biggest impediment to it working well.
I have the same case just pulled it out of storage to re use it, I was using a hyte revolt 3 DA2 is such a sext case, I had a dark rock TF2 with 5900x and compared to this silver 130 the cooling is about on par with it I can now use my temper glass for the case, and show off the insides Im very happy with this cooler. system spec R9 5900x RTX 3080Ti FE 32gb of 3600 cl16 ballistix RGB psu corsair sfx 750 plantinum WD black sn750 1 TB and intel 660p 2 TB
I think it would do quite well, considering the OC'd 10700K draws more power than the 5900X at stock. Now if you were to OC the 5900X that's a different story but at 142W or so, I'd expect similar fan speeds required at full load, so considering it did OK for the noise optimized level I'd expect around the 1700 rpm mark, about 7dBA above typical ambient levels.
wait this is the SE-904XT Slim version right ? wondering if it able to cool 10700k in inwin a1 plus, 2x intake bottom, 1 intake rear (the cpu cooler ), 1 side exhaust.
Will the silver soul fit in the ncase when used with a gigabyte b550i? I can’t tell if the higher socket placement will interfere with the top panel. I’m considering this cooler since the c14s doesn’t work with the higher placement.
I have the asus b550i with the side bracket with a 120mm fan mounted. No issues with clearance. Not sure if you'd be able to run the side bracket but just throwing it out there to show how much room there could be. Best of luck.
I’m guessing you mean for the SS135? It would have to be in sync with the 120mm fan, so it’d have to run faster than it. The gain is typically not worth it, the key is having the intake at the back as the first “push” fan to feed the cooler.
It's the inside of the corners that don't sit flush against the heatsink screws, so you'd have to grind off the corners. With my motherboard I also have an issue because of the tall board heatsink. With the right fan it's probably fine, the concern I have is once you grind down to the structural part of the frame where it's acting as a strut, it might result in balance issues. EDIT: I tried an NF-A12x25 and it could clear on my board, but this depends on your board heatsink setup, I had to offset my fan downwards and the heatsink clips were able to stretch over. It's kind of wedged in place between the heatsink so it doesn't move but the bottom heatsink clip isn't the most secure thing.
@@MachinesMore I meant PUSH/PULL. In my Ncase M1, I had the ASRock X99 ITX with an i7-5960X OC'ed to 4.4GHz pulling around 220W. With the configuration you're specifying as a "dual fan" configuration, my temps were going above 90C; something I didn't want since I would 3D render (Blender, VRay, Maxwell) for hours. As soon as I removed the rear case mounted fan and installed it directly onto the NH-U9S for a PUSH/PULL intake configuration and with no rear mounted fan, my CPU temp dropped approximately 10-15C depending on the 3D rendering software I used. It'd be nice to see an additional video with each CPU cooler and the maximum amount of fans that can be installed onto them.
I have that cooler paired it with 5900x and it would get high mid 80s during some cod on 4k 3080Ti fe at stock it a good cooler but not for a 5900x and yes I also had to fans on the cooler it didnt help much
You mean the “cage” at the back rattling? One thing that’s helped at least for me is to use the vibration dampeners but not tighten down the fan screws all the way, and let the dampeners be fully expanded. Cuts down on vibration somewhat.
@@MachinesMore No, not the cage. If you mount rear 92mm fan as intake in Ncase, because it's pushed to the grid/grille with fins against it, it apparently creates turbulence and high pitch noise. I tried that myself and read from many other on reddit that even with 6mm spacers people couldn't manage to get rid of the noise in that configuration. My AK120 mini is set to intake from rear, but I can't use 92mm fan as additional intake because of that problem with noise/turbulence. Was wondering if you managed to solve this somehow as your noctua was mounted with rear intake and fan mounted directly to the grille.
I'll be using the C14S for some config testing so that should give a good cross comparison. Empirically I know the best configs for the case but I've never sat down and benched it in a controlled fashion.
For the M1 two 120mm fans will be tough. On one side there is your board’s IO shroud, so typically only 92mm fans are safe, on the other side there’s RAM. For the NF-A12x25 I managed to clip one onto there and cleared my board’s top heatsink by shifting the fan down. It was a big stretch for the clips though.
If you mean the thermaltake 135, I have see a few builds with the 5800x3d, I’m getting ready to upgrade from a 2700x in fact. Most say this cooler pairs well with this CPU! Keep in mind I have also heard the 5800x3d runs HOT, and you cannot over clock this CPU. Overall, I think you should be okay. I’ll keep you posted on how mine goes.
If you are going to use aftermarket fans, why not use Bequiet? They have better cfm, static pressure than the noctura ones, or is that a low key paid advertisment?
Thermalright have been at the top of their game for tower coolers for a long time, but they go way under the radar of most people-maybe because of distribution and advertising. I've had the Le Grand Macho RT in my build for the last few years, and it's phenomenal.

For the NF-A12x25 I managed to clip one onto there and cleared my board’s top heatsink by shifting the fan down. It was a big stretch for the clips though.
@@MachinesMore Does A12x25 fit better than T30 in the middle?
Cryorig M9 would also fit.
Fast forward a year, and it's $40 on amazon
Anyone know if this cooler would be sufficient for a Ryzen 5800x3D? (Without overclocking)
SE 904XT is kinda outdated.
If you are going to use aftermarket fans, why not use Bequiet? They have better cfm, static pressure than the noctura ones, or is that a low key paid advertisment?
it really sound like hash machine lol
