Hey Luke, it was an absolute honour meeting you! I'm so glad that we had the opportunity to reflect about our current situation and life in general during these past 3 weeks. You are truly a gifted storyteller of people's lives around the world - thank you for coming here and travelling with me. I am lucky enough to have such a kind-hearted friend like you; already missing your presence! Reading all of your comments made me feel so happy; hopefully we can travel together again soon! Thank you for being such an amazing person, my man :)
stay safe, dude. the terrorist junta might come at you just for simply saying we are in bad conditions.
Yes, be safe ! 🙏
Myanmar is an amazing country with some of the most lovely people💛 I'm so sorry you have to go through this. I hope to one day visit again
James Yan, thank you for taking care of Luke and all the efforts you put into being so kind. I hope the situation improves so you can have the great future you deserve.
You're an Amazing dude, stay safe✨
Luke this is your best story yet. Seeing you travel through a struggling country at war like Myanmar, I see you maturing and learning about the world in similar ways that I have personally been humbled enough to be able to do.
I know how psychologically hard these trips can be for reasons anyone who’s never been will ever relate to. Proud of you, can’t wait for more
Couldn't agree more fellas ❤

@@filthycasual1603 I’d love for that to happen!!
Forever grateful for you.

Currently, I'm a 19 years old student in Burma. I couldn't act blind enough to join any university during this coup. So, I stopped going to school after seeing all the tragedy, deaths and hellishness happening to our students and our people. Right now, I'm working to support my family during the revolution. I wish all the souls we've lost in the revolution best of everything and eternal peace. For all of our people who come across the video, I want to remind you all that "this too shall pass". Stay strong. Stay committed to the revolution. We fight back not because we're certain we'll win. We fight because it's the right thing to do.
မနိုင်နိုင်ပါဘူးခင်ဗျာ။
i'm sad for you.
Sup from myanmar too comrade
I am a Burmese too man, I know how you feel. This situation had affected us greatly.
Stay strong and be safe! Hope everything will be alright one day, until then let's just move forward together! When there is will, there is always a way, right?
They will pay for what they did to us.
As a fellow 2nd year student in Myanmar , I can reassure that James literally represents almost all young people in Myanmar. We want to try to go forward but every situation is holding us back. What James said is so true. The future is out of our control and we don't know what to do with our lives and it infuriates me. Inflation is also insane and it's like we all are living for just food and shelter day by day. Luke thank you so much for coming to our country during these times because it must be so hard. I have been feeling numb because of situations during these two years and I literally bawled my eyes out after watching this video. Hope this video reaches to everyone . I guarantee that there is so much potential in our country and our people. We just need to end this. Thank you so much Luke and James.🤍
Edit - Thank you so much for all the kind words. I appreciate it. We will stay strong.🙌
If I have the chance to go back to my home country, I will do it in an instant. As someone who was born and lived in Myanmar for a decade, Myanmar will always remain a part of my identity. Thus, when you're suffering, I am also suffering with you. Stay strong.
@@henrykai777 Yes, we will stay strong. Thank you so much. Hope you can come back and visit in the better future of Myanmar.
hopefully this ends soon. I've never heard about this civil war, it's sad that the media is totally ignoring it
I can't hold back my tears while reading your comment..It is very sad to hear young generation lost their future..pls don't give up on ur hope and your future....
We won't give up on this revolution..
We must win.

Thanks Luke for this video. As Malaysian, we feel sorry for what happened to Myanmar and hoping we can help in any way that we can. People like James with his future ahead reminds me of how grateful i am to live in Malaysia. Hope a better future for Myanmar!
That melted my heart as a Burmese, thank u! Love to Malaysia
This video was as much about James as it was about Myanmar. You have a gift for connecting with people and sharing their story through their country. It's fascinating (and usually heartbreaking) to watch. You're an artists Luke. Don't ever stop what you're doing
As a Thai person, I had to study a lot about our history of old wars with Myanmar (most of it twisted propaganda for the sake of patriotism) and was always curious about this country. Then I had a chance to visit when Myanmar started to officially open its borders in 2011 and then revisited in 2014. Even in those short years I could see how much the country developed through foreign investments and tourism. The locals who were curious about my button Nokia phone that could take photos in 2011 all had huge touchscreen phones and were always enjoying taking selfies in 2014. I could feel their hopefulness for a bright future, so it broke my heart when the coup happened. Not saying Thailand is much better since the current government also came from a coup, but the level of military oppression is on another level in Myanmar since there are more ethnic minorities there. Many Burmese people are already working in Thailand and they probably feel like they can't go back. I pray for James and everyone in Myanmar. May peace and stability be restored soon and I hope to someday be able to revisit all the places I had been to.
Thanks for your kind heart. I live in Myanmar.
Thank you for your kindness to the people of Myanmar. Thailand is a blessed land as well. I am sincerely sorry for some of the ancient kings of Myanmar and what they had done to the Kingdom of Thailand and Thai people.
@@FaithHninsaintinChrist Thanks for your kind words and no need to be sorry for the past we had no association with. History is always written from multiple perspectives and nothing can be accepted as 100% fact.

Just moved to Thailand not long ago. Still haven’t finished highschool 😢
"I was born here, and I have no choice" The most relatable quote for me, being a youth in myanmar. Some are fighting in war, some were lost their lives. I don't know how to explain but myanmar rn is a hell on earth and we are still struggling to breathe. Living through day by day with hearts full of guilty and worrying about our futures. Hope we can overcome this and appreciate the value of our lives. Stay strong, my fellow friends. And thank you for making this content, Luke and James. I love this very much.
Good days shall come dear.🌸

I was born and raised in Myanmar, but this is the first time such a bad situation has happened. All of us really want this to end as fast as it should. Also we all are trying so hard to go through and fight. We need more videos like this to grab attention to our country. It was greatful to watch your videos.
Yes, all this time the country is being destroyed, hundreds of big bridges down, buildings gone and because of this people will suffer even if it stopped tomorrow
This is actually not the first time this has happened. Myanmar has been under fire from the coup since the 1970s, possibly when Bogyoke Aung San was murdered
@@raylectro yes, l know but was not born at that time so this is the first time for me.
@maybeanny1224 ah, yeah a little misleading i must say but now i get it
Beautiful video Luke ♥ This feels like you've really come into your own.
I was a teacher in Naypyitaw from 2018-2021 until Covid hit, and previously taught in Mandalay and Yangon. I find Myanmar a fascinating and very sad country, with the current situation ignored by the world community. I'm on my way back to teach again in Myanmar in a few months from now, because right now the people of Myanmar, and especially students and young people need all the help that we can give them. "III"
thank you, teacher.
Thanks from Burma
III
hey. I teach too. Is it safe there? Sounds like a fascinating place to live.
Thanks a lot for your kind consideration.
I lived in Myanmar for 5 years as a kid (I'm from the United States). One of the most amazing and underrated countries in the world. Even before the coup, Naypyidaw was like this. 10 lane highways with two cars. Incredible. Thank you for bringing back these now bittersweet memories Luke, whether ballooning or sitting in a wooden kayak on the lake. Always amazing storytelling and filmmaking.
It was open for about 10 years. I wanted to go but I guess it won’t happen in my lifetime. Some places just never achieve peace. It’s very sad. But as with most places, there’s good resources that they fight over which is why they haven’t had peace.
@@tainankingyou can easily go there now. I live in Thailand and all land borders have opened. Also there are daily flights going into Yangon. There are certain provinces you should avoid but the major tourist locations are safe to visit
@@remon9099 I just feel it’s not ok to go tho. Not like how it was open to tourism

I constantly rewatch this vid because it is so beautifully done. Luke and James are just wonderful too. My heart goes out to James too for the struggle he has.
This is really beautifully done especially the section where James talks about his future against the sunset. And James is such a nice guy.
my favourite video of yours, Luke, what an incredible story! Wishing James a bright future
I visited Myanmar for the month of January and fell in love with the people and culture during that time. The people are so incredibly friendly, and the traditions and clothing are rich and gorgeous. It's a huge shame to see Myanmar destroy itself, with its incredible potential. My fiance is Burmese and I'm planning on moving there in a few months. Wish me luck!
Takecare
I do think they do not let foreigners go freely so please be careful.
I'm from Southeast Asia, a member of Asean. We are visa free with all 11 Asean countries, but several of my countrymen were detained in prison for entering the country as tourist via mae sot in thailand. Reason: myanmar does not allow tourist atm, except thais. Some of my countrymen, 50-70 still there detained and abused by a syndicate ( they were illegally recruited via thailand). Their activities: fraud, scam, hacking. Their victims are mostly from the West.
@@thantzinmaung-yq6cu Only where they want
@Krizzy Deleon wrong, myanmar is now open to all nationals not just thais, i know coz i was there last dec.
Your longevity on this platform is amazing ! And you’re still making great content !
This video is gonna stick with me, thanks for making it and hats off!
As an American living in Myanmar, I have been moved to tears many times at the reality of the people who live here. Without a doubt, the people of Myanmar are the kindest people you could ever meet. The way they handle the situation here is really unbelievable. Life has to go on and they are making the best of the situation. But I am told constantly how different life was before the events that occurred here. I sincerely hope for good things to happen here.
I would love to see more tourists, but, politically I don't know how safe it is to come here. As a foreigner, tourists and expats are sort of in this protected bubble. It is in no ones interest to harm a foreigner. That said, I can count on one hand the number of times I came across Western tourists. There are a few from China and India. Most tourists here are local. Travel is difficult. Foreigners can get "busses" but it's easier to hire a car and driver. When I have traveled outside of Mandalay, the hotels have been full, but they were during holidays.
It's an amazing place and I feel so fortunate to be here. I do recommend coming, but travel with care and think about where you spend your money and who is being supported by your dollars (ah yes - crispy $100 are the ONLY foreign currency taken. So if you come, you need to bring pristine US cash).
Is the local currency not accepted?
They aren't kind what about the rohingya
@@true_hani not all burmese people are like that. it was mostly military and extremists.
@@true_haniit’s just the coup but most people hate indians here or just my father it’s very normalized
What is it like now?-I lived there before it opened and when it was opening up,it was best in 2011, just when it was opening, I'm wondering how difficult it is to access the eastern part of the country and it's people on the ground like yourself that probably know.
As an American who's only heard about Myanmar through the media reports and occasional social media pages, this was an extreme delight to watch and listen to.
This piece you've made, Luke, was so sensitive, transparent, and warmingly (bitter)sweet to watch. I'm so glad that you got to show me and the rest of us Myanmar as it is today thru the lens of you and your friend James.
This is fast becoming my favorite channel!
I'm a Burmese and very sad to see all falling apart in my own country, but still u made a really good story. Thank U & support u 🙏.
From one James to another - good luck, enjoy life. Stop and stare. Thank you for the video, Luke. You're incredibly good at delivering a story much richer in meaning than the sum of its parts.
Your speech was so beautiful james
the respect and admiration for the local culture that you have is always visible in your creations and makes me respect you and your work more and more each time. its amazing to see you grow and a storyteller and filmmaker. so proud ❤❤❤
Beautiful words sis ❤️
This is a very well-made video. Thank you so much for such an amazing story, Luke & James!
Such a beautiful video. Have paused at the end of the video to type this comment, and James has a massive smile on his face (turning my silent tears into a sob). My heart breaks for all of the lost potential, the sadness of James saying that he can't imagine a future because he's just trying to make it through the present, but at the same time I am inspired by the dogged optimism and grace - my hopes are with the Burmese people that the situation improves so that they can get back to living. Thank you Luke for another insightful and fantastic video
This was excellent, Luke. Myanmar seems like a country with a lot of potential, but it's been so deeply troubled for so long, it's hard to imagine things getting better any time soon. In either case, it was nice to see a rare glimpse of it and to be reminded that most people there are just trying to live normal lives like everyone else. I wish the best for James and for you.
I feel that you filming this on a minimal setup (just an iPhone) really adds character to the story line. James is such a happy and humble guy, and his home country isn't providing much for him. He doesn't have a lot currently but he still extracts so much out of his life.
You extracting this beautiful story from an iPhone speaks volume to your creativity and passion for sharing positivity.
Great vibes, thanks for creating and sharing this!
Deep respect for trying to live life as free as possible while stuck under the blanket of mass anxiety and fear of the future. Always need to remind myself to keep smiling, and if James can do is, so can I.
My grandparents were from Myanmar but had to move due to civil unrests. It’s so fascinating watching someone explore the country. I hope I can go one day.
James seems like such a nice and wholesome guy! I related to his story in many ways. As a Venezuelan, when things got pretty pretty bad a few years ago, my life stopped, same as James' and many others in my country. That feeling of uncertainty, not knowing what's going to happen, to put our lives on hold, to stop our education, the feeling of isolation, it's something else, it's horrible, something you'll only understand once you live it.
I related to James specially when he said "I was born here and I have no choice", That touched me, not many people not how that feels but I do know. When you are born in a place where you have no choice, it's a raw and cruel reality that can hurt so deeply. We don't have control over anything in these situations, we can only live day by day and think about the present moment because the future seems so distant and it's even painful to think about it.
I hope, things can get better, not only for James but to everyone in Myanmar, really. I hope he can find his way and made his dreams come true, I hope we can feel free again, to see a future and light in it. Send him a hug. Great video Luke! 💙
As a Burmese youth your comment is really describing what is happening in us especially to me.. since I had no choice I have been aimless working from last 2 yrs just to seek for the reality experience but the only time passed I didn't find my way..and also I don't have any passionate for what to do and also there is no one & nothing can guarantee about my future ..making my own path is kind of harsh. day after day I am reaching the lowest part of my mind..sometime thinking about my future is really suffocating (sry for my bad eng I just want to open my mind)
@@oniibo4791 I felt like I was the only one who felt like it. But as a 20 yo in myanmar, I do undrestand what you're feeling rn. feel free to open up brother. You can add me on facebook so we coul talk about it.

This is a great video, not only because I got to see it again, not only because someone noticed Myanmar (I have friends who never knew of its existence), but because of the bravery and kind-heartedness, as well as the hope that was given to James and the other locals
This made me cry for so many reasons. Yourvfriend James is so introspective and it sounds like the war has taken a huge toll on him and so many other citizens who just want to live a war free life. How is Luke so good at capturing candid camera!! Really cool!
You should honestly write a book about your travels, experiences, the people you've met, the differences in cultures all over the world, the conversations you've had,... 100% would buy and read that.
Dude I cried looking at the clip !

Jame's positivity and Luke's emotions on the whole situation hit me !
All the best and we work it out together ok ?
Luke I feel we are being heard , so thank you
What I really admire about your content- your way of travelling is that you don’t jump from one thing to other whether it comes to places as if ticking a checklist or people- it’s so lovely to watch you interact with one person throughout rather than a little conversations with a lot of people(not that I don’t like that), but it’s the depth, the depth in everything you breathe.
fully agreed, it really sets him apart from other youtubers and it's very valuable content
Hey Luke, thank you.
Priceless video
Luke, your journey through Naypyidaw was a wild ride! The empty streets, the strange hotel, and the unique experiences made me laugh and feel intrigued. James' reflections on the future hit home. Life can be overwhelming, but let's take a moment to appreciate the beauty around us. Thanks for sharing this incredible adventure! Safe travels, my friend! ✈🌍
Luke, thank you so much for sharing this story with the world. I'm a fourteen-year-old student from Myanmar, and honestly, I can say that James did an amazing job of representing the civilians living in Myanmar. Myanmar has a lot of potential, yet all of us are stuck in this country, and not knowing what to do next is the most horrible thing I'm going through as a young teenager. I hope our country gets better asap. Looking forward to better days...❤️
I'm always so excited when Luke releases a new video and this one definitely didn't disappoint. I love how he always goes off the beaten path and finds his own adventures even in a country where it's difficult to travel. James' story was really moving and I do hope things get better for him and the people of Myanmar.

Beautiful video. Thanks for letting us know what the situation is like at the moment. I have been to Myanmar several times (pre-covid) and its one of my favourite places. People are some of the friendliest that iv'e ever met. Hoping to go again soon and your video is a big help.
The decision to focus the narrative on James' poem about life and uncertainty is so relatable. I felt like I wasn't only relating to him, but to the people of Myanmar as a whole.
One of the best films from Luke…the main takeaway that I got from this film is how even in bad situations and circumstances, there will always be things that we can take away from those experiences. Myanmar is a beautiful country that has been revenged by war and evil…the worst part about this is how people will hear about the situation and eventually they’ll just forget about it since the media has moved onto something else. We forget about the pain, fear, and difficulties that people have to go through, and I think it was quite courageous for Luke to go there and document his experience, taking on a lot of personal risk, and I think he did a fantastic job contacting and planning with James, and going on this adventure with him. He appeared somewhat quite at first, but being on this journey allowed you and everyone else hear some of the things he had to say, behind the initial facade . The main thing that I’m wondering about is whether his videos are a reflection on his experiences, or if they are a reflection on himself…are the places he choses to go to places that he wants to travel to, or places where he’s trying to find something that he’s lost?
I'm so thrilled! I'm not from Myanmar, but I used to live there from 2017 to 2021. I was there when the military coup happened, and I was outside with everybody. Watching your video brings back so many memories, wonderful memories... Thank you so much for this video ❤ It feels as if I were there, walking in Myanmar... I miss it so much.

As someone who grew up in Myanmar but away from home now, it makes me really emotional just simply hearing about my country, thank you Luke, for presenting our country to the world. At times, people unknowingly compile tragedy together, and reality gets lost in the process. Hopefully, this is the start of a story to be told, and I’m happy that you’re the one to do it.

This is just so beautiful, I can't really explain why or how but it really moved me in a certain way. Thank you!
Brings back memories of my backpacking through the country in 2019, amazing video
Luke, your content is SO valuable! I don't know how to express it properly, it's made with so much integrity and sincerity, the style you have of showing things and telling stories is so unique, I think what sets you apart is that you don't tell the story of what *you* experience in a country, you tell the story of the people who live in that country and who you meet along the way, and that really sets you apart from other CZcamsrs who make travel content, the fact that it's not about you, but about them. Thank you for showing us life inside a country which many of us have heard of but would otherwise never have a chance to see from the inside!
Also, immediately I wonder if you could make similar content in Ukraine, of course there's no lack of media coverage about the war, but I would love to see how ordinary people still go about their lives there despite the war, and I feel like there'd be no better person than you to tell that story. Or a country like Venezuela, if it were safe... Just a thought, thank you for your videos 🤍

I am around the same age as James and I am from a place near the conflicts/wars in Myanmar. What James said in the video represents all of us . We have lost our futures , our rights and our dreams . Sometimes I feel like giving up but try to stay strong because I know that's not the answer. So I always try to enjoy the present to stay away from the thoughts that stress me out . Thank you Luke for visiting our country and show the world what is it like here . Also stay strong James , we are in this together.
Seeing this video made me very emotional, I am from Myanmar and part of the diaspora abroad and to see what is happening be forgotten and not talked about is very frustrating. So I am glad that there are still people who care to tell Myanmar’s story the bads but also about the people and potentials of it. So thank you for making this video
Wow! I can’t believe someone from America would come to my country! This vid made my day 😊 (btw, you pronounced some words wrong)
Thank u so much Luke. I got chills watching this video.
you never miss with these videos, beautiful storytelling and showcase of different cultures, i think everyone can agree this is some of the best content on yt right now ❤
I lived in Myanmar for nearly 2 years in both Yangon and Mandalay.. I must say I miss it immensely as the people are so kind. I pray that the situation gets better and I'll come back again someday.
I don't exactly why, but this made me cry so badly man. Thank you for the reflection, I really needed it.
Absolutely it is the situation in Myanmar right now. Thanks for showing this to the world.
Luke, you are a brilliant film maker. You get deep into the hearts of people, and that is so rare. You change people's lives for the better and I can only imagine how you will continue to evolve in the future, as you grow and experience more and more. You're still so young. Also, I think what James is feeling is what a lot of people are feeling all over the world right now, though his situation is harsh. I wish him and you the best.
Luke, I'm so glad that u finally come visit to our homeland, Myanmar. Thank u so much for letting the world know about our country and current situations. Watching this video, I also feel proud of James who represents Myanmar.
I'm just an ordinary girl who was born in Myanmar. I don't know how some others response to Myanmar about current situation tho, as a Myanmar citizen I really proud of myself for being a Myanmar. Whenever it could be, or whatever it will be, this country is my home. I believe the day I hope to be is coming.
Although I've known you just now, when I grow up, I want to be a person like you. Telling the life of some parts and some people of the world of ours. I'm neither a shining star nor the sun. I know I can't give light to the entire world. But I just want to be a star which can bright its environment, as being a little star tho.
I... I just want some people to know what the other side of the world be like..
I am really glad to say thank to Mr Luke for this video.

Hi Luke, I’m glad to see that you were able to visit Myanmar and I hope you will return safely from there. I’ve been wanting to know about the recent conditions in Myanmar. It's sad to hear that the number of visitors has significantly decreased after the coup. Many people's dreams have been ruined and their lives have been completely changed. Anyway, thank you (Kyay Zuu A Myar Gyi) for uploading this video, and I hope you will get home safely.
this was an incredibly eye-opening adventure and story Luke!!! thanks for showing us this part of the world and how beautiful people are no matter the circumstance
His amazing!!! Luke, thank you for sharing this!!
As someone who has only recently moved to Australia from Burma (Myanmar) after being evicted by military. Since this video was taken it has gotten a lot worse. The war throughout Myanmar is not recent is has been going on for more than 80+ years, (my grandparents were in Yangon at the time when it had a big start. If you are going to go there, go with someone who is Burmese, no other race from Asia otherwise they will target. Do not go by yourself as it is very dangerous to just be there in the first place. If you are with somebody go stay in the north of Burma because it is a richer area which is a little bit more safe than south. Just my opinion as somebody who has lived there their whole life. ❤❤
