After seeing these cutscenes repurposed hundreds of times in CZcams Poops, I wanted to see what the story was behind the development of this game and how it ended up in this state. 8:03: Here’s the funny thing about Hotel Mario: there’s a reason that Hotel Mario looks like a “severely dumbed down version of Bugs Bunny’s Crazy Castle”; it was because Hotel Mario is actually a re-imagining of “Looney Tunes Hotel” for the Atari 2600… although Looney Tunes Hotel is more of a prototype, since I don’t think it was properly released, Hotel Mario definitely took more advantage of the gameplay. Just like Hotel Mario, Looney Tunes Hotel wants you to close all the doors to complete a level; but unlike Hotel Mario, it doesn’t have many special gimmicks that would let you continue playing the game. No power ups, no extra lives, just Bugs Bunny being forced to close doors. Also, good on Hollie S. Lohff for bringing attention to Mario’s core platforming mechanic, because Looney Tunes Hotel didn’t include jumping either prior to her suggestion on Hotel Mario.
10:33: Actually, it was before Charles Martinet became the official voice of Mario for the video games, but after the atrocious backlash of the 1993 Mario Movie. Plus, Lou Albano Mario still felt like he’s an Italian immigrated to Brooklyn, whereas Walker Boone and Bob Hoskins’ Marios ditched the Italian part entirely. Although Hotel Mario would technically be the last time Mario was depicted as a non-Italian type American, Interplay’s Mario games (minus the DOS version of Mario Teaches Typing) features Charles Martinet as the voice of Mario, a few years before Super Mario 64, but after he was casted to voice Mario for Tradeshows that are using “Mario in Real Time”.
12:45: Actually, if you count the last 25 stages as two stages each, then that means Hotel Mario has a whopping 100 stages of Hotel Madness.
13:04: In all fairness, though, the REAL worst Mario games are the ones from the Software Toolworks. Why? 2 words: false advertising. At least with Hotel Mario, it takes advantage of using mechanics of the original games (which is why the game had such praise back then). Mario is Missing and Mario’s Time Machine doesn’t feel like Mario games. The NES versions tried to make it convincing, but it leads into a false sense of security. Although the ones from Interplay (Mario Teaches Typing and Mario’s Game Gallery) didn’t feel like Mario games from a mechanical sense, it has more familiarity than what Software Toolworks did with Mario.

Based on how sick of 2D platformers everyone was by the 90's, it's pretty telling that critics would talk up anything that was even a little different
This game marked the last appearance of the Koopalings until 2003's Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga.
I’d argue that this game has a lot more creativity and talent put into it than most triple-A games nowadays. It had a unique idea and it doesn’t feel generic like most first person shooter games nowadays for example.
Regarding Iggy’s lack of a hotel:
According to Hotel Mario developer Trici Venola, an artist for the game drew up a “cheese hotel” that went unused, and the artist was fired. Maybe the cheese hotel was meant for Iggy?
Trici also didn’t like the idea of a cheese hotel.
I think this game would've worked much better as an arcade game rather than a console game. The gameplay would've fit in perfectly with 80's/90's arcade games.

If not for the memeable cutscenes, this game, alongside Link: The Faces of Evil and Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon (which I will refer to as the CDI Trio) would be super obscure, and if this trio of games didn't exist, we wouldn't have Seedy Eye and Arzette: The Jewel of Faramore. Also, CZcams Poops wouldn't be as memorable in thenearly years of CZcams, let alone exist.

5:24 Actually, for some reason PS5 can't play music CDs. Also, Switch can't even stream music from dedicated music apps, I think. There was a point where this was true though, with PS3, I literally did do everything. I don't remember if PS4 could play CDs or not.

my biggest issue with the game is the time limit... it doesn't give me enough time to understand the level's themes/gimmicks.
if it was 999 seconds per stage i wouldn't mind but no... it's... it's quite bad. like 300 seconds on stages that might take a LONG while.

In fairness the VCD cart at 5:28 is built into the CDi model shown a few moments before. I'm less than a foot away from mine now. I love it. Burn:Cycle.

It's really surprising to learn that Silas Warner was involved in the CD-I games -- he's the original designer of the original Castle Wolfenstein, the game that later got remade as Wolfenstein 3D and launched the FPS revolution!

Nintendo's inadvertent creation of Sony is one of my favorite video game origin stories. Ultimately I'm glad the Philips CD-i happened because "all toasters toast toast!" is a permanent phrase in my vocabulary.

Honestly, one reason a lot of people in modern times dont understand exactly why the CDI games are so bad is because they play it on emulator. The original controller was so awful and controlled so poorly that it makes the game much worse than you can realize by playing on emulator with a keyboard or modern xbox or ps5 controler.

Honestly this game is not that bad. If it had been on a real game console that controlled properly and not been saddled with the expectations of the Mario franchise it would probably be considered a "hidden gem" puzzle platformer today.
And say what you will about the cutscenes, but at least they gave Mario his proper thiccness. Just look at that luscious dumper.
I put to you that if this was on the SNES and Wrecking Crew and Mario and Wario were on the CDi, the opinions would also be reversed.

I don't remember from where I learned why Nintendo and Sony had the falling out, but what I know is that it was mainly due that the deal favored Sony more, as they would have publishing rights to develop their own games without Nintendo's input since the CD technology was theirs, and since Nintendo always needs to be in control of everything they were against this so they went with Philips instead, and that's how Nintendo created their own worst enemy, but they really deserved it for backing out in the worst way possible.
I gotta appreciate the super low budget scenes from Russian company Animation Magic, who are capable of better things if given more budget and direction. You get what you pay for. Blizzard contracted them for the cutscenes in the cancelled Warcraft Lord of the Clans point and click adventure game, and it looks a lot better.
Animation Magic is long gone so we're not likely to get their unique style ever again. For good or for ill.

i disagree. this game is objectively bad, yes, but it has such a wonky charm and i love it for it. the cutscenes, while ugly, are immortalized in the internet and have done so much (at least for the old ytp community). also Mario is missing, Marios time machine and Mario teaches typing are right there. though the castle theme of marios time machine slaps
Such a shame that Nintendo created their own worst enemy that... killed Sega (not that they weren't knackered anyway but it didn't help)

Honestly, judging by what I've seen from the game, it really doesn't look THAT bad. I'd say the biggest criticism is that it looks mostly repetitive.
This game is still better than World, but if you dare to call World bad you get 500 Soytendie fans come out the woodwork to say you're just trolling or being a contrarian. At least with saying "I liked Hotel Mario more than a few others" they don't question it with Mario's Early Years existing.

aka. the story of how Nintendo made such poor decisions that they were responsible for creating one of their biggest competitors by breaking the deal they had with them.
Not only that, but they made a new deal with a different company since they broke the first one, and it led to the creations of what can probably be considered the worst Nintendo games ever made, when the first deal could have given them good games.
Did a company ever mess up things that badly for themselves in the entirety of history ?
Coca-Cola did the mistake of not buying Pepsi for themselves when both companies were young, but Coke had a much larger stronghold on the market than Pepsi at the time. Look at how Pepsi now owns Frito-Lay and several fast food chains. So I'd argue that Nintendo's not the only company to make a blunder of those proportions, but they're still mistakes that make you notice how hubris is costly.
