    Lore-wise, with Cynthia being a mythologist (kinda like a historian), she’d be frightened by how strong Volo was. Much like how we still have absolutely no idea how was it possible for ancient Babylons to observe the weather and create the lunar calendar, or how ancient Egyptians managed to build a pyramid. Both tasks are easy in today's technology.
    Sure, Volo was weaker than she is as a trainer without Giratina and the 'cheats', but in Cynthia’s modern era, all the pokemon battle's know-hows have been readily taught and the new trainers didn't have to start from scratch. They also have a strong supporting system and a training system. They can train and produce strong trainer much much easier than the past.
    Volo, on the other hand, had to rely on his own. The training he must've gone through (likely self-taught) in an era where people were so ignorant about pokemon is unimaginable. He'd likely have started training his six pokemons before pokeballs were even invented. The title Pokemon Wielder is no joke. He is probably the most talented Pokemon trainer to have ever existed in history by a large margin, and could only be defeated by someone who came from the future.

    This character is very interesting thematically, as while he may not be the strongest character in the series, he was, in the lore of the game, hands down the strongest trainer at that point in time, which admittedly isn’t saying much since “trainers” were somewhat of a new concept at the time, but that also means that at that time period, volo was likely the strongest man alive, carrying powerful pokemon at his disposal that could theoretically wipe out entire towns with little opposition if he so choose to. His remark that it seemed like our character was shot out of the rift just to stop him may actually be true, as it’s likely that arceus realized the threat volo posed, and his only option was to summon a trainer from the future strong enough to stop him.

      Not to mention ingo, who is a single battle specialist (the only battle format that existed at the time), who also weilded legendaries.
      Arceus sent (at least) two of the people who would be best equipped to stop him into the past just to make sure he's stopped. That's how big the threat of him is.

      I think Arceus wanted the first pokédex to be completed so people would stop being afraid of pokemon. Like, Arceus wouldn't even let Volo in its realm and Volo wouldn't be able to do anything about it, his plan was: If I get all the plates, I'll get to know Arceus! I think the screwy thing about comparing Volo to other trainers is the change in game mechanics. In old games, you could hit a problem mon and get swept. Legends Arceus means the faster Pokemon won't simply outspeed after a ko, so the game is more about exchanging ko's and revenge killing the last thing they sent out, and having the 2 phase fight with that powerful Giratina is rough after Volo's tenderized your team so much. In general, higher level Pokemon also seem to take more damage from lower level ones than they did in the past, so that isn't a reliable way to curbstomp your enemies either.

      In addition to that, all cheese strats have been purged as PLA only has attack, status setting and basic stat boosting moves. All of these have also been modified to prevent the player from being able to perfectly set up for a sweep(ex: sleep switched for drowsy, only 1 stage of stat boosts).
      Where you could find a winning strat in other games and abuse it, PLA makes that impossible. Add to that the fact that switch mode isn’t a thing here and that item use might let Volo land 2 hits in a row and you get a brutal combination.
      Effectively, the only « cheese strats » here is to overlevel and perfectly Ev train.

      It's an arbitrarily long fight in a game filled with short fights and is the first where you need to actually be paying attention to any real degree.
      I am convinced nonetheless that he is not a hard person to beat, but he does catch you off guard and has the first full team that then leads into a legendary fight, individually they are not a challenge, but this is new and so you aren't expecting it.. There's no equivalent in the other games, but being under-prepared, and probably not having your best team on hand like you would normally for such a situation as we are conditioned by the game to use a rotating team, inflates the difficulty a lot. As well the turn system can really screw you, especially if you haven't put in the time to actually learn how to take advantage of it.
      I had 4 lvl 20s on hand when I fought him, a lvl 60 and a lvl 72? I won rather easily although I did have to think about what I was doing as I effectively only had two pokemon.

Also let's be honest you benefit more the strong and agile than volo does. The amount of youtubers who I've seen who would have lost that battle without legends arceus mechanics is a lot

    • @AsassinoSilenzioso
      @AsassinoSilenzioso Před 2 lety +1

      @@jmetivier9217 fair point, but untrue. In a regular game Volo will have to stand up against things like Zacian-C for example, his team is not up to the task. The shallow movepool, the lack of abilities and held items, the restricted list of Pokémon make him far more challenging. Also, being fast is good but not a win button and to be honest his team is not hard to outsped, Garchomp is base 102 speed and it's his faster monster, the aforementioned Zacian-C for example is base 148. It's a very good superboss lorewise and is a great fight in the context of LPA, but if you take him out of that pond he becomes mediocre at best.

    • @jmetivier9217

      @@AsassinoSilenzioso that's no really a good argument. First using legendary pokemon that is A largely agreed to be the most broken pokemon pokemon as a comparison and would make any fight easy, B where talking in playthrough not a online battle every in game teams would be in online battles. This also covers the comment for there being a limited dex because in every pokemon the pokemon pool is limited. Second you didn't really argue any o my points. To add on to my point it would be much harder to get extremely over level or get high level pokemon like in legends arceus so for most people you would either be at or lower level than volo. Also you can go watch CZcams and see the sheer amount of times they use strong or agile style while volo use it sparsely and the amount of youtuber who would lost if Speed was like the normal game is a lot. Third if this was put in a normal game let's be honest the moveset for his team would be different and if it was in bdsp he would have a ev on his pokemon with item on top of what I said before hand. Lastly third a lot of the people who battle volo used mythical and legendary which they wouldn't access to most of them or if there are some they wouldn't have gone for them. Also if you look in the pattern with people in main stream don't use legendary at all bar some people who do which is usability the box legendary (which you normally get one of). If you disagree me than you can argue my point or come with more. Also this isn't me trying to attack you or say you're opinion is invalid and if it does sound like that than I apologize.
      Edit I forgot to address your points about abilities and held item which to extinct is true but most people don't really run held item unless it's sooth bell, amulet coins, or leftover. In regards to ability it really wouldn't matter because a lot of pokemon good abilities are usually hidden abilities which most players don't go out of there way to get and don't forget volo would also get his pokemon ability. Lastly if this fight was in bdsp ( which would make the most sense) his pokemon would be ev, max iv, have there best abilities, and have there move set change to be more challenging which also includes Giratina

    From my perspective, Cynthia would look down on Volo for using Giratina, but not because he is using one. The player is fully capable of catching their own legendary and use it in a battle against Cynthia and she has that same respect for them no matter what. She would be livid about how Volo got Giratina and wants it for.
    As far as whose stronger, Cynthia oddly enough, still counters Volo’s team very much, not just because it is nearly the same team as her own. Milotic itself is the exact counter that is has the means to take down parts of Volo’s team and Giratina by virtue of its bulk and ice beam. Most successful runs against Giratina utilize a bulky Pokemon, from Sylveon to Goodra to Cresselia. Cynthia’s Milotic, even without Marvel Scale to amp it’s defense, is an incredibly bulky mon that has the coverage and the love Recover to take out Giratina, with Garchomp and Togekiss in the back to cover Milotic if it goes down.
    Volo is a harder battle in-game, but Cynthia definitely has the means to defeat Volo, especially if we use the best version of her team.

    I like how the fight was borderline impossible without overlevellinging you mons. My og team was a samurott, torterra, rapidash, toxicroak, raichu, and a honchcrow. I just resorted to grinding my team up to around level ninety, the most difficult part is definitely the fact that you can't heal in between volo and giritina which is how i failed the most :/

    My first encounter with Cynthia was in Pokemon Black. I fought her in her beach side house and despite not know who she was or what her pokemon consisted of, I was able to play around my lack of knowledge by switching out mons and capitalizing off of type disadvantage. Volo forced me to do something that few other trainers in the game have ever made me do. Back out of the fight, reset, and build a team to completely counter his mons, while also keeping in mind to keep a mon or 2 that can also counter Giratina. Volo's ability to not just fight you with a full team but also with the back to back Giratina fights make him the most dangerous trainer to date in my opinion

  • @SomeoneIsTaken
    @SomeoneIsTaken Před rokem +8

    I feel like the way they added strong style and agile style was just for the player to be demolished in the end. Like you're almost done with giratina and so you go for strong style to end it for sure to max accuracy and damage but no there's a second phase which makes you forced to tank at least 2 attacks from giratina. Unless you're spamming max revives you're not surviving the first try

    • @holyroman6541
      @holyroman6541 Před rokem

      One thing I noticed is that the better your understanding of Strong Style and Agile Style is, the less of a rough time you'll have in this fight. I had an absolutely horrid amalgamation of a Pokémon team, and all of them were the level 67-69, but still I managed to beat the entire thing on my third try, while many try to brute force their way through with overleveled Legendary spam and still tank a multitude of losses.
      More than anything, Volo's and Giratina's fight is where speed and a trained understanding in Strong Style and Agile Style comes in, moreso than at any other point in the game (well, I haven't done or seen the Arceus fight, so I wouldn't know about that one atleast). Being able to use Strong Style to finish a powerful enemy Pokémon off before it can do too much damage is just as important as being able to use Agile Style to get a buff in on the same turn as an attack. Further than that, knowing how both Styles can balance eachother out and play off of eachothers weaknesses is by far the most important part.
      Even with all that though, this fight is still by no means easy.

    • @LordTyph
      @LordTyph Před rokem

    I guess technically in isolation just with the Giratina one the end makes it one of the tougher single battles in pokemon. But honestly, the way I played PLA, and how it was kinda fun again to catch stuff, I has so much experience by then, my team just beat him easily. So for me it didn't feel that way, but if I didn't mess around so much before and just went straight there with lower level pokemon, I can see it could have been tough. But the more linear progression of the main series often leaves me at the "intended" level for the bigger fights and I never really just fight or catch wild pokemon for fun, so in someways they felt harder to me.

I remember defeating lysandrer's mega gyarados and before I could even feel relief he sent out a xernias. plus, guivani's mega mewtew - in whatever version you play - is plain brutal. had to do to poni island to grind some levels solely for him

    From personal experience, Red was a far, far easier experience than Volo. The main reason Red is even considered difficult for so many people is because of how high level he is. Without intense amounts of grinding you're probably going to face off against Red with a team of at most in the 60s. When I finally took on Red with a team in the mid 70s he was a total cake walk.
    Also if you're interested my team was:
    Typholsion
    Mamoswine
    Slowbro
    Dragonite
    Ampharos
    Crobat

      Agree on this so much. HG was one of my first Pomemon games ever played (only played Emerald, Diamond, Black 2 and Platinum before it), and he really wasn't that big of a deal. Defeated him first try with no revives.
      The past games themselves aren't hard per say, just more grindy (especially HGSS.)
      My team was:
      Typhlosion
      Lucario
      Dragonite
      Glaceon
      Vaporeon
      Jirachi
      (Really liked Jirachi at the time, so I just used a cheat code to cath it, so no EV, IV, nature and moveset manipulation through PKHeX.)
      Honestly, Blue was harder than Red for me.
      Since I have importabt exams coming up, I didn't play through PLA, but my griend bought it and called me to help him with Volo. And while I don't consider myself an extremely great player, I do think I'm pretty decent.
      But even with a team that covered him pretty well:
      Samurott
      Infernape
      Garchomp
      Staraptor
      Luxray
      Dialga
      He was a total menace. Took me 2 tries, but I really had to be careful. Also, despite the friend grinding for grits, I decided not to use them.
      Kinda went off track there, sorry 😅

    i think the combination of the “on paper” aspect, him having 8 pokemon and they’re all very strong, and the change of battle mechanics makes this an easy answer to me. He is certainly the hardest battle in the series. Now a lot of that answer is up to personal opinion so i’m not saying that as fact, that’s just how i feel. I have never struggled with a battle like i did with volo EVER before.

    I've thought about this a lot, and I think there is 1 more big factor to this being so difficult, that being this fight is in a game that revolves so much more around catching Pokémon than battling. There is a new battle system which is never fully explained to you and you have to figure out. Add that with the respectable team of a near Cynthia clone and adding a powered up Giratina using both of it's forms, and this fight is one of the hardest in any Pokémon game.

  • @gregorywalpole8442
    @gregorywalpole8442 Před 2 lety +4

    The trainer battle I compared Volo to when I saw the Giratina segue was actually Greevil. For those who never played Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness, Greevil is the main antagonist, and he starts by throwing Shadow Lugia at you. Once you catch or defeat *that*, he brings out his team of six, including *three more legendaries*, all of whom are also Shadow Pokemon with moves that are universally super-effective against regular Pokemon. The game expects you to try to stop and catch all seven of these Pokemon while they do their best to destroy your team, so it's a bit of a slog to say the least.

Pretty I disturbed my parents sleep because of it lmao.
