The team has a solid bottom 6. Its someone of the top that has been needed for a trade, to bring in a legitimate #1 goalie, and a #1 dman. Big Reilly fan but he ain't that guy.

Shanahan was the person who first identified and hired Kyle, so let's trust his judgement.
My read here: Kyle, his family, and his agent wanted Masai Ujiri money (10+m) because of how successful the Leafs are from a revenue point of view compared to the Raptors; Leafs brass offered him a deal that was in line with the very top level of NHL Gms (4-6m$). Note, the NBA generates several times the revenue the NHL does.
When Kyle came back asking for more money on Thursday after indicating publicly he needed to think about it for family reasons (those two things clash), Leafs brass felt the ask was disrespectful/a bad read on the situation, considering his limited success in the big picture (playoffs). If you want very top end money, you should be able to back it up with trophies. So they said thank you, but no thank you.
I'm.... 85% sure this accurately describes the broad strokes of what happened.

Dubas was advised by Shanahan NOT to speak but he said nope. This was his downfall. Back about 10 years ago he sought out Doug MacLean to ask him how to deal with an owner in SSM that was on the verge of firing him. Then Shanahan was looking for a young hockey mind and people recommended Dubas. So he is hired, Shanahan could have fired him after both the Montreal and Columbus collaspes but no Shanahan kept him and supported Dubas. Then with the parameters of a new contract done Dubas goes on tv and brings his wife and kids into this and saying I am not sure I will come back. Shanahan is thinking, wait he agreed to a new contract but now Shanahan says step on the brakes Brendan, this is a big wrench thrown into the process. Then nothing from Kyle Tues, they meet Wed, still no answers for Shanahan and then says to Shanahan I will call u Thursday. Dubas agent calls says we have a new counter offer after he had agreed to the contract which Shanahan was waiting to announce. Then at supper Dubas , does not call Shanahan, no he emails him saying I want the job. Then owners meet with Shanahan and say move on from Dubas. He used his wife and kids as bargaining chips. He over played his hand and got called on it and got himself fired. Dubas is manipulative man, he throws temper tantrums in public and though he is a good GM he failed. Shanahan gave him a chance that some people work decades for and never get. He spit in Shanahans face. The man that took him from a junior team he was about to get fired from to the NHL. He is a manipulater and full of hot air. He inherited a playoff team and could not get it over the hump. If Tampas goalie had played 10 percent better the Leafs lose in round one. Because except for game 2 Tampa outplayed Toronto and lost because their goalie sucked.

Make Bruce Boudreau the new Coach & Brad Treliving the new GM.
Bruce has deep history as a player with Toronto & he has said that he wants to coach here..
Brad navigated that mess in Calgary fairly well he got a good return for Tkachuk who didn't want to be there anymore.
After the heavy lifting was done they canned him.
Toronto has lots of heavy lifting to be done & Brad would have a fresh take & outside look on the situation so to speak.
Bc as we all know Toronto always overvalues all the players they have.
I would straight up trade 1 of the core 3 for Vancouver goalie Demko.
I would also try to land a top defenseman out of Colorado bc they have plenty but will need offense now..

Many commenters here saying Dubas needs to be kept. Don't forget he put 40 mil in 4 players.

There seems the family has taken a real toll and Dubas has taken this job home with him. I can see him stepping down, He is under a lot of pressure, probably move him upstairs
