Space Marines are a good first choice, but there are some great options in Drukhari, Tau and even Custodes if you want to lose all your friends.

It's always worth noting that third party miniatures are always an option, so long as you're not a GW purist. Unfortunately, most factions are only represented in third party in the form of resin (which is more expensive than hard plastic) or metal (which is _even more_ expensive). Among those you can get outside GW, they're often as costly or more costly than their GW equivalents. Though you often get a lot of customization options, both in loadout and in appearance (Anvil Industries makes some really good Sisters alternatives, for example, and Spellcrow has some great Space Marines).
The major exception to this is Imperial Guard, for which you have plenty of affordable alternatives, including in plastic. Obviously any historical mini range could be repurposed as Guard, so long as you source your special weapons from elsewhere.
But if you want Guard-alikes all in one box, nothing beats *Wargames Atlantic.* Their Death Fields line has a bunch of box sets that give a bunch of serviceable guardsmen, with most of the special weapons you'd ever need, and that look great. Most boxes of that series have between 24-30 models, for $35. My personal recommendation is the Les Grognards box, which has special weapons (8x each of plasma, flamer, melta, and grenade launcher), laspistols (8x), chainswords (8x), 24 infantry, and six different hat and mask options (three helmet types, in bare and masked versions).
One Les Grognards box can give you either a regular Guardsmen Kill Team or Veteran kill team, plus a bunch of extras for swapping weapon loadouts. The only thing the box really lacks is stuff like Boltguns and Medic bags (and the Heavy Weapons box at least has medic options, if you really need that, along with an extra six Les Grognards models).
Super weird that you bring this up, too. I have a video in the works about that Les Grognards box. It’s definitely my favorite 3rd part kit. I really like mixing the guardsmen and scion kits with Grognards as the base. I like to use the the gas mask+fur hats for Scions. And the standard fur heads for guardsmen. I also love the plasma guns that come in that kit.

you can always proxy too if your opponent is ok with it, I 3D printed a whole homebrew xenos race and proxied them as harlequins. honestly if the base and height are the same my opponent can use cardboard cutouts for all I care

What I'd like to see is how to build and kit out one Kill Team in a deep dive approach. Really get in there, what boxes in what amount to buy, or which bits to get and/or how to proxy this and that. One faction of your choosing!

@@battlebrotherstabletop if I may suggest a faction, I was looking into the AdMec HuntersClade KT and now my head hurts. That would be a complicated topic, especially when considering Compendium AdMec as an additional option/faction/Kill Team in which you can use the AdMec Models.
I believe TS and their WH rules are similiar.

Another good option is the First Strike box if you can find it - one Space Marine KT and one Death Guard KT for $35-$40. Keep up the good work!

Got everything I needed for a Death Guard team from eBay. People continue to sell off broken up Dark Imperium sets even now; 7 plague marines, still on the sprue, with bases, for around $20.

@@iamphL true - I don't have a blight launcher but I've got a 30k heavy bolter and guard grenade launcher to splice together and that'll make a fierce looking heavy weapon.

Thanks for the info! Definately agree with those choices but I would like to add the option for the Recruit Box. Where you get an Assault Intercessor Team and a Necron Warrior Team. Performance wise obviously not the greatest, but you get two teams for a cheap price and this is ideal to start playing and learn the general rules.

@@battlebrotherstabletop hey man. No probs at all. I love your content. Yesss I am still liking DW. I played them this weekend actually. Boy is the Fragcannon back from the dead. However, I do like the IHB as you can shoot twice with the bolter discipline.
I've actually been playing a lot of AdMech too (Hunter Clade). I've loved playing them too. So much synergy!

I keep seeing people run the IHB and I totally get it, it’s nasty with bolter disciple. For me though, it’s Frag all the way. It really messes with your opponents deployment/movement because it really punishes you for bunching up models. The other day I killed 3 cultists in one shot 😂
I really like melee marines, and I’ve been running the 2 storm shields. I think maybe I should focus more on shooting just to keep bodies around longer. Melee basically guarantees that your models will be dead by the end of turn 3 😂
I just bought a box of Skitarii, and I can’t seem to find a box of Sicarians anywhere, but they’re one the next teams I’m interested in though. Are you happy with the hunter clade rules? Thousand Sons look like they’ll be pretty lethal once they get their white dwarf rules in the new edition.
@@battlebrotherstabletop ahhhh yes. I used the Frag V Harlequins and it totally messed up my opponents ideas as he bunched them together by a wall. One with an engagement order the rest concealed, it's fair to say he won't do that again.
I went with one guy with a shield. Wow those things are great in melee with the parry! Hahaha yeah in melee you are pretty much dead by round three.
I'm really happy with Hunter Clade. They have so many options. So many cool combos you can put together. The Alpha leader with his ability to allow other models to activate one after another, the data tether giving extra APL to models. Great equipment too that allows free pickups and mission tactics. I could go on. They are certainly a thinkers team and you need to makesure you have certain models doing things while being with others etc. With the free imperatives to choose from and some really good tactical ploys I think they have the answer to everything. I've absolutely loved playing them! I hope you find some Sicarians soon. They are great. I already had 3infiltrators and 2rustalkers built from the last edition and they've been great so far.

As someone who recently built a kill team out of the Plague Marine box I can give a +1 on that. That said the regular Chaos Marines box can also give you a pretty competitive kill team .
Nice! I haven’t played death guard yet, but I will be testing them out soon. How do you feel about that 4inch movement? That new chaos space marine kit is so good!
@@battlebrotherstabletop I haven't had a wide amount of experience with them yet, just some training games with my pals. The plague bell can help you get the models that need to get close into range of the enemy (generally your champion and any fighters) whilst everyone else lays down covering fire or digs in. They are probably only beaten by Custodes in the durability stakes.
@@battlebrotherstabletop Generally though, from talking to other DG players, it's about having a clear vision of what you're going to do when you set up. You don't have the manoeuvrability to redeploy on the fly.

I really like the relatively short kill team videos you make, a lot of kill team content is pretty long which is fine but sometimes i don't have the energy to watch an hour long video

As a suggestion, have you tried primaris reivers? The reiver box is pricey but they're easy to find for cheap on ebay since reivers aren't good in big 40k and there is a lot of the easy to build ones floating around. Reiver kill teams look like they could be good since every member has an AP1 weapon and they can get equipment to increase their mobility to get across the board.

At the very least, one can get a bit more personality with Space Marines by grabbing the Mark III or Mark IV armor boxes. Sure, they're Tactical Marines - no idea how effective they are - but they'll look different. Opens up interesting roleplay opportunities if you try to explain _why_ they're in such old armor.

Congrats man. I have a similar goal. My idea is to have one of every kill team so that I can play it with anyone. But I also want to have a transport vehicle for each kill team, for when I have them displayed on my shelf.
Dude, that's so dope. Yeah, that's my reason/excuse too! I think the only vehicle I have is the rhinox or whatever it's called from the Scions start collecting box. It makes a great piece of terrain!

@@battlebrotherstabletop i have right now assult intercessors from the easy press fit because they were cheap, a team of those and some necrons, deathmark and warriors. Having a blast just finished painting my first models the other day.
Great stuff bud :-) I think you would Love OnePageRules Grimdark Future Firefight it has full lists for everything, over two armies to pick from with all units and rules out for free and the core game basic rules for free as well. Lots of options for units, upgrades etc... Just thought you might like it :-)

The wyches box won't have the guns to build kabalites. A box of Chaos space marines will build you 10 guys with most loadout options covered and they look to be quite effective.
Did I imply that you could build kabalites from a box of wyches? Will have to watch the vid back.

Can confirm 10 repentia is fun, although very squishy! Ork commandos have no trouble deleting 3 a turn from the rocked, sniper, and dakka dash boys. And that’s before the other orks do stuff
Oof, that’s a tough matchup! Kommandos have been crushing lately, they just have so many tools in their tool bag.
I feel like all repentia would be good against Tyranid genestealers with their unshootable tricks or maybe harlequins or something. I like how sisters as a faction can be pretty flexible.

That made me think. You’ll probably need more than 10 pathfinders anyway to build all the options. So you could actually buy one kit now and then buy the new one in addition and have all the options.

I agree with you, they seem to have some of the strongest shooting in the game plus the wound regeneration is cool too. I have a hobby idea that I want to try with them, so I’ll definitely do a vid on them sooner than later!

there's a box of skitari rangers for like 44$ and if you're using the white dwarf rules they make up one full team. haven't tried them yet but they seem pretty decent and fun.
For sure! At the time of recording Hunter Clades hadn’t been released yet. I would really like to see more specialist teams be playable with one box, makes it a lot easier for people to get into.

No worries! Yes, each fire team is 2 marines, but you always include a plague champion leader which would take you to 5 marines.

Thanks! Not sure what you mean. There aren't any rules for necromunda teams in KT, but if you wanted to use necromunda models to proxy a KT faction, you could totally do that.
