- In the place of Touhou Thursday to give myself a break and extend it even just a week longer, I'm putting this out there.
Ran into the problem myself and I might just be dumb but actually figuring out how to do this was a pain in the ass from just text alone. I'd like to actually see it thank you very much? Anyways here it is as well as Why it happens and some random bullshit
The reason you cannot edit the file while it's still in the "etc" directory is because editing it requires administrator permissions. If you just open it with Notepad you don't open Notepad as an administrator, so your computer doesn't let you edit it. By copying it out, editing it and then overwriting it you get asked if you can do it. That little shield icon next to continue when you move the file and try overwriting it means you're using administrator permissions.
You can technically run the notepad app as an administrator (for example right clicking it from your start menu) and then click "File" in the top left corner, click open and open the "hosts" file that way. Then you can edit it and save it no problem. But the file overwrite method in this video is much simpler anyway. I just thought this would be interesting to know for some.
Fair play, completely forgot there was an "open file" under the file tab despite using it frequently in other programs like Shotcut.
Using the method from the video worked on my computer but as soon as I tried it on my rog ally it didn’t work so I do recommend this method as opening notepad as administrator
Well, I'm glad I'm not the only one who's decided to replay a 16 year old game... this was driving me INSANE - fixed it perfectly. Thank you!
Throwback Thursday let’s gooo
+1
Someone mentioned to me replaying all AC games from the start so I decided to do so myself. Reinstalled AC1 only to run into this constant stutter every 66 seconds. One quick Google search lead to me here, and blocking the IP address you listed immediately fixed the problem. Thanks for the great tip, the game is now running flawlessly 16 years after the initial release. 😁
Happy to help, and glad that this solution has like a... 70-80% success rate? I dunno what's wrong but I'm sure someone who actually knows what they're doing can sus it out
I played the game 3 years ago and I did not have this problem. Now I wanted to do a replay and I was freezing like this. Thank you for this.
Also for me it freezes literally 2 seconds after I start the game - during ubisoft logo sequence. That was also caused by this problem.
I sticked around to learn why it freezes and i was shocked. thx for the wisdom, you deserved the like
Thank you, have been trying to fix this for ages and this has finally fixed it. Great video!
Was trying to bring some nostalgia back into my gaming and play the game. Glad someone was able to tell me how to fix the freezing problem. So far so good!Haven’t had it freeze yet. Cheers!
This was so helpful and thanks for including an explanation, I hate it when people give fixes but don't explain why it works
On one hand, it's not really necessary to know why it works if it works. On the other it A, helps diagnose the issue better and B, is just kind of cool to know yeah?
@@TheHylainKnight yeah!!
who would have guessed someone repaired a game from 2007, thanks for making me able to get some nostalgia
Ur a god!!! Also of note is that you can tell immediately that it works if it doesn't do the weird "startup stutter"
Basically upon opening the Ubisoft logo animation would get real jittery and the audio would glitch out too
Thank you so much for this, man. I was so upset because I love this game, and was having constant stuttering. You’re the bomb!
OMG!! This worked like charm. Love you for this. Also your desktop is a gamer's wet dream.
I won't fix it. The freezing doesn't have delta time, so it just gives me more time to think during encounters!
This video absolutely rocks. Thanks for making this, and even for explaining just what's going wrong.
oh my god dude i nearly brought an entire new windows activation key trying to fix this issue (dont ask i went down an enitre rabbit hole). thank you so much!!
thank you for the fix it worked like a charm never would of thought of it the first game I played on the ps3 was this one now replaying it with the directors cur on my pc.
Thank you so much I can finally enjoy this game properly after several hours of dealing with the freezing I got really sick of it
I skipped the wi-fi check and went directly to edit the host file and it worked! Thanks for this.
Thank you so much for this tutorial! Very straightforward.
You the real MVP for this. Worked for me. Thanks!
your are the best man. I just searched for 5 hours and finallly you saved me, im so happy!!
I know the feeling. Glad I could be the end of your search
Omg this actually works thank you so much. Idk how the FUCK you figured this out but thank you so much this has made the game actually playable.
Google? The hardest part to figure out for me was that I needed to go down a line past all the # lines and put that in. Rest is relatively easy and to some degree it does make sense that they'd have achievement tracking though... wish they'd have patched it out when they abandoned the game
Good lord, thank you. I never finished this when it came out, I had it on Disc on PC. I bought it on Steam on sale not long ago and decided to give it a go again. I’m like hey I can play it in 4K now! Everything was working fine for awhile then about 6 months ago it was stuttering every 10 seconds or so and was unplayable. Fixed! Thank you! So dumb Ubisoft!
*I played the game years ago with 0 issues... other than erasing my profile by accident, and now I wanted to play it again and started to suffer these Freezings, don't know why since it's same PC but this Fix helped me. Thank You.*
Ey man, thanks so much for this magic trick you did. I can play the game normally, thanks to you. Big love G❤
Thanks bro! I was about to punch into my monitor if i didn't fix that with your assistance! It was very frustrating.
Thanks, you saved me a lot frustration! Also, damn, you have so many great games installed. Rock on!
I was about to give up than stumbled upon your video, Thank you
Not all heroes wear capes thank you so much :)
Thank you very much. My friend got into trouble because of this problem. Thanks to you, we solved this and my friend has very fun about the game. ❤
Thanks for this did it and it worked great. Dumb question but doing this fix won't cause other games/things to mess up will it?
In retrospect, it's not a dumb question. But damn does everyone love asking it.
No, it shouldn't. The change affects the local ports of your PC so if it DOES cause a problem, it'll be on the Local Network so like... if you and the boiz decide to bring all the Laptops over to play Dawn of War at your place instead of dealing with wifi nonsense.
Thank you, because the constant shutdown of the Internet infuriated me
thanks for the help, the gaem runs perfectly now.
Turning off wifi or internet also works. AC1 tries to connect to a long lost ubisoft server for metrics. But it happens like every 1-2 minutes and takes 30-60 seconds to "fail" connection. This obviously is a more consistent solution
thank you👍👍
This is the only tuto that's works with me! Thank you so much!!
Thanks man. It worked for me and enjoying the game.
It really works dude, thanks ❤
Thanks for everything Man , and You're a man of culture
You are an absolute king. I can enjoy this childhood game of mine once more. Thank you.
Im trying to play it too but i can't play with my controller. How did you do ?
Dud thank you so much my brother has been wanting to play this game since he got it on pc for years I can not thank you enough
Thank you so much. I've been on an assassin's creed kick and wanted to play the original and was gonna be so sad if this ruined the experience.
You my friend are a bloody legend! Thankyou so much!
You are an angel! No more freezing!
If you now have a solution how I can use my xbox-controller with the triggers (the game doesn't "see" them). I would consider that a miracle. The solution from a few years ago doesn't work anymore. I don't know why.
Helped out exactly as needed! Noticed it made the trailer at the start dissapear but nonetheless my AC1 works!
Weird, it shouldn't have done That I think but... if it works and you don't really mind then all's well that ends well?
First one works for me like the issue never existed!! Thanks a lot!!
thanks man, too bad ubisoft doesnt give credit to their oldergames.
Thanks for the clear explanation :)
Thank You for doing this m8🥇
You deserve 1 million likes, dude.
Well I dont understand all this tech wizardry, but I followed the steps and it seems to have worked.
I'm gonna be honest, I don't question it sometimes. Understanding is nice but if it works then it works
Thank you! The IPs in the host file fixed the freezing issue for me!
You are the best! Thank you 🥳
ABSOLUTE LIFESAVER!
Thank you very much, I always thought it was my pc that couldn't handle high graphics, thankfully it was the fault of the ghost Ubi server
Thank you so much, this solved the problem!
Thanks for the vid brother, it fixed the problem, one question though, does the "hosts" file that we changed affect the computer or other games?
If I had a nickle for every person that asked this
No it shouldn't. The only way I can foresee it affecting your systems is if you have a LAN party for whatever reason in this day and age. The IP addition in that file simply makes the computer think the IP it's looking for is a local network, and immediately stop looking as far as I know.
@@TheHylainKnight Thanks for the response, sorry it was a repeated question, peace be upon you
perfect fix, thanks a ton
Genuinely, thank you so much. I know jackshit about computers so when I wanted to play a game from my childhood and was struggling, I found myself at a complete loss reading steam FAQs. I saw your post on one of the main threads about the freezing. Dear god, I don't know what I'd be doing without your help.
Here's my next question though- How in the hell do I get my xbox controller to map properly?
Are you still having issues with mapping your controller properly ? If so you have to use xc360 to translate your inputs into xbox360 controller inputs then you have to use hidhide (along with the ViGEm bus drivers) to hide your original xbox controller. XC360 will create a fake xbox 360 controller and you want to use this one to play the game.
Thank you man! Is there any known issue related to low performance (poor FPS) for the same game in Windows 11? While I'm getting a good experience with more recent titles, AC 1 (a 2007 game! 🤷🏻♂️) simply doesn't like W11. I've tried forcing it running with compatibility enabled (Win XP SP3 and then tried Win 7) and forcing the game to run with the DirectX 9 exe. Nothing of that worked. Any suggestions, bro?
No clue, I put this up because no one else seemed to have posted about this beforehand.
I suppose isolating the issue first would be a good solution. If changing your graphics settings isn't working then yeah it's an external problem. I assume you've updated your drivers and all of that should've been enough.
Probably something I just don't know in the spaghetti code that is the original AC on modern devices
amazing video u are the best
Fixed! Thank you! Shame on you, Ubisoft!
Excellent.
Thank you Sir.
Thank you very much for help. The problem is gone.😀👍
I'm trying to do this but it's telling me I need administrator permission in order to do so.
Sounds like you're trying to edit the file directly from that folder, which it doesn't let you normally. Either right click and copy it somewhere you Can edit it in or check out the pinned comment
Thank you so much, worked a miracle !
thank you for being awesome🎉
holy balls, this dude runs all his games off his desktop, why?
anyway great video it has a lot of good info.
Because, and thank you
thank you from vietnam
I tried this but it didn't help... :/ ! My hosts-file also didn't have as much text as yours..
Thank you very much for this, is this fix a permanent one?
Should be, so long as you saved the file and it doesn't revert back somehow
Thanks brother now I can enjoy 🙏
Great explanation thanks for the info!
Thank you very much 💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼👊🏼
Thats alot of games on your pc, thanks for the vid
Didn't change a thing for me. Dx9 crash immediately and Dx10 will run for 2 seconds.
That sounds like a graphics problem rather than a wifi problem
@@TheHylainKnight I found the problem and it was the dumbest thing ever.... I unplugged my internet cable and then the game works.... Duh!!!
I’m new to anything related to PCs and I’m sorry if my question sound dumb. But does this solution affect any other thing in the PC regarding connection with the internet or how other games perform?
As far as I know, it should not. That IP as far as I know is what the game considers the online servers that Ubisoft shut down for AC1, so unless some other game for whatever reason is looking for those exact servers it shouldn't affect much. Keyword of shouldn't.
@@TheHylainKnight much obliged my friend
Thanks for the help. It works now.
The host file doesn't show up in the etc file don't know what to do
OMG thank you it has worked
youre the real mvp thank you so much
The fact you have to turn off wifi/edit the host file to play the game NORMALLY is mind boggling to me.
a SINGLE PLAYER GAME too mind you. What was Ubisoft smoking
thank you so much lad!!
damn, system 32? thats scary.
Thank you so much!
are there any side effects with editing the file at all? I'm not computer savvy at all so I have no idea what could happen, I just wanna make sure this won't effect anything else on my computer (games, programs, browsers, etc. etc.)
very useful I subbed
Thank you great sir great explanation too
LOVELY
ok i have to ask because a ton of people say wifi and mean their internet.
i have wired internet because wifi sucks, do you mean wifi specifically? or internet all together
Internet altogether. It feels self-explanatory to me, but then again I have dozens of people asking if by changing a Local IP in the files does it change anything for games that go beyond the local network.
I'm happy to answer this stuff and I'm sorry for venting but I'm probably getting close to the point where this comment section is gonna be on it's own
todd howard?
Thank you dude ❤❤
its so helpful
It's working, thank you!
Awesome thanks for the help!!! Fixed it
U ARE THE BEST 🙏
Thanks buddy , worked for me!
Thank you so much !!
thanks for making this video
That worked
Thanks a lot
Thanks for sharing, I have a similar issue. I have the game on steam and it refuses to start at all if I am connected to the internet. funnily enough it gets half way through the ubisoft logo, it freezes and then exits. This issue is not present if I'm not connected to the internet. It's almost as if Ubisoft itself is making fun of me after paying for a nostalgic masterpiece. "how DARE you try and launch this game you've paid for?!"
You know what is stranger? If I'm connected to the internet and I start the game from the exe rather than from steam... it works! it still freezes every 30 seconds or so, but at least it launches. So you would THINK that if you add the exe to steam as a "non-steam game", that should work too right? NOPE! game refuses to open.
So I can get the game to launch now but it still freezes every 10 seconds.
Unfortunatelly changing the hosts file doesn't resolve the issue, so the only way for me to play AC without lag is to disconnect from the internet. That's so tedious to do EVERY time I want to enjoy some good old AC1.
I've looked on reddit, I looked on gog forums, steam forums, some other ancient forums, I tried different computers and even getting a pirated version of the game in hopes it would have been DRM free (tried both GOG and Steam version), tried changing Nvidia settings, Nvidia drivers, turning off overlays, messed with my firewall... all this did was fuel my anger towards Ubisoft. I could try emulating the 360 version of the game I guess...
DARN IT UBISOFT, IF YOU ARE GONNA MILK THE FRANCHISE AT LEAST DO IT PROPERLY
The notepad app is saving the newly edited "host" file as a .txt file. In that case, I can't replace the original one.
Instructions not clear, what do you mean you can't replace it? The file format shouldn't affect putting it back into the folder whatsoever unless you're only making that change to the Copied file and not to all of that file type
And if that's the case someone also suggested opening Notepad outside of this with "run as administrator, going to the top left to Open file and getting to that folder, then doing the edits while its open as Admin. Should override the thing preventing us from editing files in that folder and let you do it.
you probably selected "save as" and not "save" (or most likely you're trying to edit the file inside the "etc" folder. This isn't possible, you have to copy it somewhere else, like desktop, to edit it, as the guide mentioned) - then it automatically adds a .txt at the end, making it a txt file. Just delete the ".txt" at the end of the filename (I hope you don't have you're system set to hide the file extensions? ;) )
@@InnermostSilence Deleting the ".txt" after I uncheked the "hide the file extensions" box SOLVED the issue!! Thank you very much!!
