Now that looks effective cheap and simple. Will be attempting this on my layout. Those grass tuffs very nice, like to let us budget railway hobbyists where ya got them would be handy at that price.

Colour - Spring
Size - 6mm
Quantity - up to you - 200 is the best value for money
Another way to get tall grass is to cut sections out of an inexpensive house paint brush and glue them in clumps of different lengths
I may be late to the game with my comment, but THANK YOU!!! I love the interesting methods that artistic modelers use to create their work, and frequently, there are budget methods that are brilliant, and more rewarding than buying something pre-made or out-of-a-bottle and "presto".... Truth be told, the more scratch-built a model / layout is, the more rewarding it is for me and any other creative type, and the extra money saved can go towards things like the train, cars, etc. I remember years ago chatting with a train shop owner in Canada who also built layouts for people, and I mentioned some method I had learned from a similar tutorial on building terrain. He looked at me patronizingly and like I was nut, but then wanted to sell me all sorts of stuff that would have added up yet produce the same results. And in his shop, the prices would have added up even more quickly because of the ridiculous prices.
Thanks for the comment and support
So simple. I love the "value" approach you use, it's right up my street. I'll have to have this a try
Thanks for your support
Just goes to show that you don't need expensive water making kits to make realistic water. Great Video!
Thanks
To create the look of deeper water you can paint the middle sections of the river a darker colour to those on the edges
Thanks, great idea
Awesome! I love this cheap and simple I must try this out
In my opinion this is not a "cheap way "; it is a "mind blowing & money saving" way of doing things for the model railway!
Advice/ suggestion needed in future on:
1) Using clear silicone to add more "dept effect" to water? (Lower priced silicones may claim to dry CLEAR but may end up being translucent!
2) Making ripples in water (to add more realism).
Thanks Mike & Doug!
ive just watched the international exhibition N gauge 2022 and noticed how some of the layouts had small streams , ponds, and even large lakes built into them and thought i wonder how they get such an effect so i typed budget model railways stream /ponds and yes as expected up it came and it will be a lot cheaper and easier to do than those layouts at the N gauge exhibition Paul
Thanks, some of the specialist products are way too expensive
This will look great on my layout! Thank you for this method!
That looks good guys, quite a nice algae look to the water
Yet again a lot of Good information, you are correct about the drying time on the Varnish had to use a hair dryer to get it to dry. Granddaughter is extremely pleased with her layout.
Thanks Kev, have you got any pics of her layout?

Have viewed, commented and subbed
This looks really effective, every bit as good as some of the most expensive water products
Don't have a water feature on my layout, but now inspired to find a small area to try your technique on.
Glad we could help, it's particularly good for smaller areas.
thanks for the tip. can't believe is that easy and cheap to make some rivers and ponds, cheers!
I like this effect a lot. Thanks for posting!
Nicely done...edges with grass blend well as with real life....
Really cool looking water thanks for the lesson
that turned out better than i thought it would have. i figured all the brush strokes would have shown up, but turned out well. thanks for sharing that tip
That's what I thought first time I tried it , especially as we only used a cheap brush, but it turns out fine
Used some of these ideas, plus dark blue foamcore as the base, and used modgepodge rather than varnish as my top coats. Do have to thin the midge podge a bit or it won’t flow nicely. Can use round foam brushes to dab the colors in.
Doing the water in the moat around Cinderella’s castle and didn’t want to spend 20-30 on specialized water effects
Another great video.......especially like the you tube “still” of the river and bridge on the tutorial Tuesday heading......looks brilliant!
Thanks, Doug has got a new camera so we will be using stills a little more in future.
I use fevicol SR,it's a PVA glue which dries transparent.
Another great informative video thanks guy a Happy New Year to you and your family keep up the good work regards George
Thanks George and a happy new year to you and yours
Looks fantastic.
looks great,nice one.jpj
Happy new year - and the effect is stunning but if you don’t pour it in then it would be hard to make ripples and waves
Looks great, and didn't break the bank
We have just been into our local model shop and the woodlands scenic water effect is £30!!!
Prices are totally out of hand! Did you happen to notice where it is made now?
See our latest video regarding prices
Great tips, I’ve done something similar with watered down PVA and as it dries I drop watered down blue washes into to build depth,
You don’t recall where you got the grass tufts do you? As you said you can a huge amount in some places
eBay, but they are easy to.make yourself
Another nice one Guy's. Happy New Year.....................John.
Brilliant effect.
Thanks Nigel
Very interesting!
I was just wondering after seeing this and woudered if you could use clear silicone sealer on top of the paint then put rocks ect then you varnish on top for depth
Possibly, or you could just use the varnish?
I thinking it would be faster to get it built up quickly
Looks really good. Does the effect last being varnish or does it craze after a while? I guess only time will tell, & by then you could always re-paint & varnish!
We have some that is a year or so old with no'problems. Like you say if it did you could just re do it.
Great video. Is it possible to add more ripples with varnish which would make it look more realistic.
It should be possible to do that .
how do you make a water feature with a current in the water.
Also very good is marklin of sweden with toilet paper !!!
Have you tried painting on top of ordinary tissue paper? It crinkles and looks like small ripples...
I've heard of the technique and might try it next time
Is that a wills bridge kit?
Well spotted
Budget Model Railways any tips on building and weathering it
It was a bit fiddly to build, but black wash and dry brushing brings the details out nicely
Hi
Interesting ideas, new layout by any chance?
Olly
It's a small diorama fir Doug to photograph locos on, and also for us to try out a few techniques
Ahh okay, just pictures or the possibility for reviews to return?
Just wondering because I use a display plinth for my reviews
Olly
Potentially for a good looking place to photograph locos for reviews. Rather than the traditional white background for a review, we thought it would look good to see the loco on a high detailed 2 foot stretch of track
Brilliant minds think alike!
Yeah, nothing against a white background reviews but if there is something about of a scene going on around the loco brings it alive. I use a shoe box lid done up like a rural goods yard (no buildings just people cars and scenics) as most of my loco's are industrial locos.
Olly
cant beat poundland . big tubes of uhu in any other shop are about 3quid or more ...poundland ... pound lol ...hows that for stating the obvious .
If only the could source locos and rolling stock!!
PS we have given you a shout out on our next layout update on Friday . I got some mirrors on eBay and they worked a treat.
great stuff . I first saw the idea on an American outline railroad in a magazine . the layout was called the gorre and daphited railroad . a hugh ho layout . pleased to be of help .
