    Now that looks effective cheap and simple. Will be attempting this on my layout. Those grass tuffs very nice, like to let us budget railway hobbyists where ya got them would be handy at that price.

    Another way to get tall grass is to cut sections out of an inexpensive house paint brush and glue them in clumps of different lengths

    I may be late to the game with my comment, but THANK YOU!!! I love the interesting methods that artistic modelers use to create their work, and frequently, there are budget methods that are brilliant, and more rewarding than buying something pre-made or out-of-a-bottle and "presto".... Truth be told, the more scratch-built a model / layout is, the more rewarding it is for me and any other creative type, and the extra money saved can go towards things like the train, cars, etc. I remember years ago chatting with a train shop owner in Canada who also built layouts for people, and I mentioned some method I had learned from a similar tutorial on building terrain. He looked at me patronizingly and like I was nut, but then wanted to sell me all sorts of stuff that would have added up yet produce the same results. And in his shop, the prices would have added up even more quickly because of the ridiculous prices.

    So simple. I love the "value" approach you use, it's right up my street. I'll have to have this a try

    Just goes to show that you don't need expensive water making kits to make realistic water. Great Video!

    To create the look of deeper water you can paint the middle sections of the river a darker colour to those on the edges

    In my opinion this is not a "cheap way "; it is a "mind blowing & money saving" way of doing things for the model railway!
    Advice/ suggestion needed in future on:
    1) Using clear silicone to add more "dept effect" to water? (Lower priced silicones may claim to dry CLEAR but may end up being translucent!
    2) Making ripples in water (to add more realism).
    Thanks Mike & Doug!

    ive just watched the international exhibition N gauge 2022 and noticed how some of the layouts had small streams , ponds, and even large lakes built into them and thought i wonder how they get such an effect so i typed budget model railways stream /ponds and yes as expected up it came and it will be a lot cheaper and easier to do than those layouts at the N gauge exhibition Paul

    Yet again a lot of Good information, you are correct about the drying time on the Varnish had to use a hair dryer to get it to dry. Granddaughter is extremely pleased with her layout.

      That's what I thought first time I tried it , especially as we only used a cheap brush, but it turns out fine

  • @attackeagle
    @attackeagle Před 6 lety +1

    Used some of these ideas, plus dark blue foamcore as the base, and used modgepodge rather than varnish as my top coats. Do have to thin the midge podge a bit or it won’t flow nicely. Can use round foam brushes to dab the colors in.

    Great tips, I’ve done something similar with watered down PVA and as it dries I drop watered down blue washes into to build depth,
    You don’t recall where you got the grass tufts do you? As you said you can a huge amount in some places

    I was just wondering after seeing this and woudered if you could use clear silicone sealer on top of the paint then put rocks ect then you varnish on top for depth

    • @BudgetModelRailways

      Just wondering because I use a display plinth for my reviews
      Olly

    • @BudgetModelRailways
      @BudgetModelRailways  Před 6 lety

      Potentially for a good looking place to photograph locos for reviews. Rather than the traditional white background for a review, we thought it would look good to see the loco on a high detailed 2 foot stretch of track

    • @BudgetModelRailways
      @BudgetModelRailways  Před 6 lety

      Brilliant minds think alike!

    • @heaptoncollierymodelrailwa6011
      @heaptoncollierymodelrailwa6011 Před 6 lety +1

      Yeah, nothing against a white background reviews but if there is something about of a scene going on around the loco brings it alive. I use a shoe box lid done up like a rural goods yard (no buildings just people cars and scenics) as most of my loco's are industrial locos.
