This is the all-new Kia Niro!
Mat’s got his hands on this family-friendly SUV to see if it has what it takes to grab your attention in an increasingly busy SUV market.
So let’s start with a look at the design. It’s notably different to the old model, with a whole new light design round at the back through to some chrome trim & bigger headlights at the front. You’ll also have the choice of optional side panels and blacked-out windows with higher-spec models!
On the inside, the improvements compared to the old model continue. The dash has a cool swooping effect coupled with a large infotainment screen, and the centre console comes with a number of physical buttons. You’ll also find soft-touch, high-quality materials throughout.
You can get the new Niro as either a hybrid or electric. The standard hybrid comes equipped with a 1.6-litre turbo petrol engine coupled with an electric motor to produce 139hp. You can also buy the Niro as a plug-in hybrid, which has the same set-up but a bigger battery and motor. So not only can it run on electric power alone for around 40 miles, but it can also put down 180hp.
Then there's an all-electric version. This is equipped with a single electric motor which is good for 201hp. The price starts from £28,000 for a hybrid, with the EV starting at £35,000!
So it all looks pretty impressive, but is the Niro really worth that £28,000 starting price? Stick with Mat to see for yourself!

I bought this car new 2 months ago and I absolutely adore it! Mine is a non plug-in hybrid and I wouldn't have anything else! I get 53 miles to the gallon and I dig the hell out of it! It's all of the car I wanted and it's gorgeous. I love that color of blue that I got it's so sexy. I can pick it out of a crowd in a mile. Here's the kicker, I bought the new Kia ev6 before that! What a mistake! I traded that thing in before it had 600 miles! There is absolutely insufficient infrastructure for charging electric cars on the road. You will not use anything slower than a DC plus fast charge and they are few and far between. Here's how few and farther between they are, where I live in eastern North Carolina interstate 95 runs straight north to south. There are count them 3 DC plus charging stations in all of the capital of Raleigh. There are only three on the entire route along i-95. There are zero east of i-95 in all of North Carolina and all of South Carolina and much of Georgia and much of Virginia. You will not sit and wait for anything less than a DC plus charge. Takes too long. You'll be cussing any all-electric vehicle that you get right now I promise you that! And by the way upgrading your home service to put in a plug is around $1,000, $500 for the plug from the car to the outlet and 500 bucks to have an electrician run a circuit from your panel to your plugin.

Kia and Hyundai are really gonna be the companies that tempt me over to electric car ownership it would seem. Polestar/Volvo/Tesla/Mercedes etc just dont do it for me (Dont get me wrong, theyre nice cars but as an example the Volvo C40 electric only is a smallish car in a big body and is rather expensive. This Niro is a good size for the 38 grand that the "2" model would set you back. I dont understand how the EV6 is 4 grand more for the base model despite probably being less practical.

    1. The seat bell sign is so sensitive, if someone even touches the rear seats it just starts screaming to put seat bell on even though no one is sitting on that one.
    2. The side passenger seat belts it self when used and then the passenger takes it off the seat belt do not go completely back to its original position therefore it keeps scraping and banging against the interior which is really annoying.
    3. The lane assist is really annoying as you mentioned I have it off all the time.
