Out of all the cars I've had in 47 years, including a few Volvos, I've found Kias to be the most frugal and reliable.
Having experience of 2 consecutive Picantos, I have nothing negative to say about the manufacturer. Nice design, strong build, bulletproof engineering. Association with Peter Schreyer and a 7 year warranty. Would have no problem driving this right across Europe.
When i saw the thumbnail i thought "Oh this is going to be a lacklustre car" but i was surprised and by the end of the video i actually liked it. The styling to begin with i didn't like but yes i could live with it. The interior is what is the best feature for me. It does look nice and practical and it seems to be a good drive too. So ill give the car 7/10 but you 10/10 for such a good video and changing my mind on this car. So great video as always and ill have to go look up some more about them.
Flappy paddles have 2 functions, if you put the car in sport ( move stick right) when in drive, then you can use them as gearing. Or, if not, the paddles can be used to adjust the braking regeneration.
Cracking review as always, Kia has been a success story and they seem to keep getting better and better, 7 year warrenty is a winner as well.
Gotta correct you there. An Atkinson cycle engine is just as much a four-stroke engine as any other regular car engine--it doesn't "squeeze everything into one turn of the crank". What it does is to keep the inlet valve open after the piston starts compressing the air, allowing some of it to escape--this lowers the overall compression ratio and thus reduces power, as you say, but it means more of the energy is taken from the explosion of the fuel/air mixture by the time the piston reaches the bottom of its power stroke.Oh, and you can totally get hybrids with manual gearboxes--you've driven one, a Suzuki Ignis!
Suzuki system is a mild hybrid and can assist but not drive the car on it's own. Some are 12V other 48V on Suzuki and it's fine to do these on a manual gearboxes. The original Honda Insight could be bought as a manual too, but Honda could not drive the car on the electric motor alone either.
And this is the "simulated" Atkinson cycle (used most notably in the early-gen Priuses) which is not to be confused with the real-deal, legit Atkinson cycle from 1882 with its fiendishly complicated rods and linkages.

Driven the all electric Kia niro last year as part of a demonstration for my work and I really quite enjoyed it. The quality of the finish in the interior was very impressive as was the range as well. Personally if I was in the market I'd be going hybrid for now until the fully electric cars have better range but it's a partnership that works extremely well for the time being. Anyway, keep up the great work man! 👌🏻
I have 19 top spec Niro in Canada . The ride improved substantially and fuel economy about 5% when I swapped for 16's . My car came with the spare and agree totally . I love thus car and it's flawless so far from -35 c to +35 c .

I have the Kia Niro hybrid 2 1.6 new this year it is a motability car, I enjoy driving it.
I was considering buying Kia Niro hybrid until I read the battery life is only between 3 to 5 years, hope that's not true, can anyone help or advise.
That was a stellar review. My wife and I have been driving a fully loaded Niro hev for 2 years now , in Canada it's a Touring . In our opinion it's the best car by far that either of us has ever owned . It's a pretty dinky car here in Manitoba, where there's lots of big ass pick up trucks etc but this car is solid , maneuverable and kind of fun in sport mode . The car that we had before was a 04 Focus hatchback auto , that car got 25 mpg uk city and 37 highway . And 20 mpg city in winter when below _ 20c . This car gets 55 city 50 highway and probably 35 city when below _ 20c . Our roads here are far worse than the UK , so I did swap the tire and wheels for 16 inch Yokohama tires on Costco rims . I balked at the price of Oem Michelin tires . I have no idea why I don't see more of these cars around .
I am in Vancouver and just bought a used 2021 PHEV SX Touring and love it. Perfect and fun city car and also great on the highway.
Very impressive car and looks great , I agree about the no spare wheel 🤔, a real pain if you get a bad puncture. Never lost a Badger in a car before but have had a few Beavers 🦫😁😉👍🏻
Nice to see they have not gone down the road of most manufacturers and glued a tablet on the front of the dash, but built an integrated screen into the dash, looks a lot better and a more quality look, unlike the Germans.
100 % , and call me old school but I hate the dissappearing shifter syndrome . I like this big solid shifter a lot , that and a very well built good looking interior in general , sans big plastic tablet stuck on as an afterthought.

Modern Monday back again! 👍 Well you can say what you want but as an everyday mode of transport there aren't a lot of cars that do it better than this Kia. I really understand why these are popular, even as PHEV and fully electric.
On most Kias, the assistance systems such as lane keep assist can be switched off with buttons to the right of the steering wheel and they don't default to on every time you turn the car on; maybe the Niro is different.
NIRO is a cool name for a car! Better than some recent awkard ones. Very interesting car without ostentation. 😉
Fully agree with going and finding a spare wheel Matt. Modern car manufactures seem not to car very much.
I hate lane assist, turned that off in my new Clio, shame I can't turn off the stop/start, have to do it every time I enter the car.
I have been researching on the car to get at the moment, I have test driven the Kia Niro Hybrid and Hyndai Ioniq, but discarded the later because its too clumsy and low. Although still not decided but after running into your informative video, I have settled for Kia Niro Hybrid.

I am not sure whether or not you turn off lane keeping assist every time you start, but it can be turned off.
Much of this electronic aids are standard on KIA in the US, and their MSRP is competitive compared to the Japanese.
I like a lighter interior like beige or Ivory, but this vehicle is not bad in this colour.
No one knows how to properly use an automatic; paddle shifters are great for inclines, especially going down one, or for 🌨, which we have plenty of! I wish I could could give you 12" over in the UK 🇬🇧, some areas in upstate New York received up to 36", I guess that is close to one meter.

Yeah agree. You would think that those low profile tyres are more prone to punctures. I have certainly seen the wall of one ripped to bits on a stone kerb.
Was in the mood for a hybrid and this is perfect for its height, size, and functionality. And it looks attractive and not assuming or odd like the prius
I remember when the pure electric version was launched with a huge marketing push, then their was loads of customers that bought a normal petrol model as Kia only imported about 2000 electric models a year
Excellent review. That colour is fantastic, some of my friends parents used to have Rover 200/400 in the similar colour back in the 90s. Living not far from Longbridge we got to see loads and the light green was very fetching too.
Cars that you can't plug in are not really hybrids, all the energy comes from petrol. It would be better if they called them energy regenerating vehicles.

I do agree about the lack of a spare wheel nowadays in new cars. I dislike this trend.
Think that the spare or repair kit should be the choice of the owner, not the manufacturer.
@@seancooke4127 The spare or repair kit is actually a regional choice. Come down to Australia or New Zealand and every Kia comes with a spare, and often a full sized one at that.
Great review Matt. Kia make nice cars. I have had a couple recently on hire and was very impressed with the build quality and general feeling of 'well screwed togetherness'. You mentioned the word 'leather' a few times regarding the trim. I seriously doubt that it is 'real' cowhide...more likely PU leather.

Love the channel.... but your description of the Atkinson Cycle was incorrect. It still has the same 4 strokes.... and the same number of crank rotations to do that... But all it does is keep the inlet valve open for a short period during the compression stroke to effect a lean burn and a relatively longer "bang" stroke. .. others can describe it better than I can for sure 🤣
Good to see you driving this type of car. I know its not something you're normally keen on (you'd probably hate my 2020 Renault Captur! 😂) Kia make some really good vehicles. I'm a fan of the current Proceed...great looking car.
Recently just bought the kia proceed shooting break (been used by carwow in there reviews and drag race) so one careful owner 😂 but a brilliant car
The shape and colour combinations of the Renault Captur set it apart from silly, pointless SUVs. The Captur looks good and does not pretend to be something it is not. It is not a Range Rover but it provides ease entry and a more commanding view of the road and I bet you didn't pay £90,000.
@@seancooke4127 The new one is very overstyled though, with too many sharp creases and messy plastic cladding. What really gets me is the rear window, which is much too small. The old one is okay but the latest one just isn't very nice to look at.

Sounds rawry under foot not bad thing good looking space Does the niro have a down hill decent with it being a cross over as they do in sportage both 2wd and AWD I like it might be on the short list when looking dashboard goodies also
Had the plug-in version of one of these for almost 3 years, best car I've ever owned. 85%+ journeys done on pure electric and when I need to go further no need to bother with the public charging infrastructure. Love it.
Forgot to add, for your 0-60 fun just nudge the gear stick into manual, don't know if it's poss on the hybrid but on the plug-in it's good fun 😄🎅

Can you put a conventional tow bar on these, suitable for transporting two 30kg electric bikes. Or pulling a light trailer.
for Niro, the heated back seats are standard in the confort version :) the heated stearing wheel is optional :)

Hi Matt,it's a nice looking car with all the toys,being hybrid helps with the driving.two things missing 1) spare wheel as a space saver isn't that ideal,I had to buy one for mine lol,2) I like a CD in my car to listen to.
Instead of a CD, I use Spotify in my Niro. Set up playlists of my favourite CDs and now have them ‘on tap’.
When driving hybrid vehicle especially self charging hybrid vehicle it requires a completely different driving style. You need to be smooth on your acceleration if you are going to floor it every time then you will not reach even 50mpg. In my toyota Auris estate I am doing 58mpg and in summer It will go up to 62mpg. You have to be smooth driver and have light right foot. If you drive 5 hours + you are more likely to reach the claimed MPG by manufactures.

Comparing a classic car to a modern is like comparing a mechanical film camera to a cameraphone. The phone is more efficient and works well for the first three years, but it is a disposable product and cannot be easily fixed. The film camera on the other hand is less efficient and slightly frustrating at first, but is a lot more exiting to use. Their simplicity means they can be repaired easily and can last for decades. My Voigtländer Vitoret DR is over 50 years old and works almost perfectly!
Kia Niro or Xceed. Which to pick?
I notice it wears Michelins, is it normal for Kias in the UK to have Michelins as original equipment? In Aus they have Kumhos as original equipment, which makes sense.
About the Calibra, at the beginning of its production run, it did achieve a drag coefficient of only 0,26, but later models got a bit worse at 0,29, due to mechanical and appearance changes.
It was the 8v that had the 0.26 low CD and the 16v that had 0.29, both available at launch. The 16v needed more air intake so less underbody shielding and higher drag.

0.29 was still a praise worthy figure. A beautiful car that was never properly replaced, no disrespect to the Astra Bertone Coupe. For this Kia Niro to achieve this figure without the Calibra's sharp nose and long low roofline is astonishing. Kudos to Kia.
Thanks to Matts great way of presenting and filming any topic, even such a car can be an interesting watch. Let's just say that the styling is not as good as Polestar's 2 or the new Honda ;-)
I fully agree that this tech is the future but why does this non-elegant styling have to be the future as well?
Styling is subjective. My wife and I find our Niro very attractive and simply the best car either of us have ever owned .

In Canada Kia reliability is near the top not far behind Toyota . And compared to a Prius is beautiful . Here in my neighborhood of Winnipeg Manitoba Canada I've been seeing more Kias and Hyundais lately than any other brand . Our personal Niro two and a half years in has had one bad sensor causing a check engine light fixed in no time under warranty.

If you want a flash car don't buy a Niro. If you want a car to get From A to B with low running cost. reliability 7 year warranty, all the safety bits and bobs nice modern interior, door cards look a bit cheap leather seats not very good quality, had plastic seats in our Sprotage looked like new after 5 years 50k. When I look at comments on CZcams about Kia a lot of people slag off the KIA brand, this is our 3rd KIa been happy with everyone none gave any problems. we P/X the kia Sportage for the Niro, We have always had 2 car as me and the wife need a car each for work. I have have a Mercedes E class convertible and will be changing it soon It wont be another Merc BMW or Jag had them money pits will most likely be the newer 2022 KIK Sportage,

7:46 how much NM of torq are there? 245, or 265 ? it's not the same... 20 NM makes a difference..
One of the most interesting reviews (ok, the others are good as well :) ), because I am thinking of getting a hybrid of some sort in the next few months. My last long distance car was a 190hp diesel so I want something of similar performance.
I've looked at the Toyota Corolla 2Litre. That's got 180hp and goes quite well. I've also considered this, the plug in version, and the Hyundai Ioniq (same power train as Kia) and a Plug-in Prius. All have their advantages and disadvantages.
One thing that keeps me going back to the Toyota's is that their finance deals are cheaper than the equivalent Kia/Hyundai ones.
Matt, are you aiming to do any more Hybrids?
yes, a bit of a variety of hybrid and full electric (and hydrogen as they come) as soon as I can get hold of the demo cars
@@furiousdriving Personally I don’t want electric solely because of the lack of infrastructure, I can’t ever see it being enough for the whole motoring community. Whereas with Hydrogen, it’s the same as a petrol car to refuel. And come 2030-35 they’ll be all this obsolete infrastructure that could (I don’t if it’s easy) converted to supply hydrogen.
Coming back to this video in hopes that we will get a review of the Niro’s redesign!
I'm in Canada and been following your page for a month or so for all your UK drives. Surprised to see you driving the top spec version of the Niro today. I have a 2018 mid-spec and totally agree about the high belt-line. Miss having a stick too - first car without one - at least it's not a CVT.
It's a great car , but the 16 in wheels are softer on crappy roads . The 18 in do give better handling .

Driven my dads Niro 4. Its nice to Potter around town especially if there are loads of round abouts that kind if rapid breaking is where you make power. However going to that from my kuga 2.0 tdci AWD it does seem to lack something.
Maybe Matt can drive a Kuga sometime and explain what makes it more special, apart from the AWD. Still, you gotta admit that the 7 year warranty can make up for a lot, Buddy.
You certainly don't want the car to break rapidly. You want a few years at least before it breaks.
@@MrsZambezi I have some experience of the Ford 2.0 TDCI on a 2007 Mondeo Edge. Very comfortable, powerful and economical, heated windscreen is worth its weight in gold. However, I have heard numerous horror stories about injectors and electronic fuel pumps. Even one loyal long time Sierra and Mondeo owner having to spend over £2000 pounds in fuel pump repairs.

I doubt that hybrids will be around for long as once the infrastructure is in place with fast charging common full electric will be the norm. That engine is basically an improved two stroke. I am with you on the spare wheel issue, particularly if on a smart Motorway when one gets a deflation and its a distance to a refuge so the tyre gets mashed. Far too many gadgets and gizmos for my liking but missing an important ashtray, many people still smoke including my GP. I now use an E cigarette so the USB is helpful.

Would you say the 58mpg is achievable? I want one but my Peugeot 208 currently gets 58mpg and is just a 1.2 petrol 3 cylinder.

I have a Kia Niro 2018 on a lease, that ends May 2021, I would like to sit a little higher and have a bit more boot space, and my grandkids say it looks like an ugly bug, but its been a great car, I had a Mercedes C-class before this and this Niro apart from the looks and badge has been better in every way. I have been looking at prettier alternatives, but up till now, I think it will be another Niro in May.

Great video, I am looking to purchase a 2020 Kia Niro and wanted to know how easy it would be to get a disabled person into the back seat, there seems to be reasonable leg room.
There’s a lot of adjustment in the front seats, so you could set passenger’s side to give more space behind, if you don’t want passenger in front seat. And doors open quite wide. But remember the driver’s seat will slide back when door is opened.
Kia Niro is a Private Hire Drivers car, it’s great on fuel and can get 60miles per gallon
i have watched 3 reviews on this car and yours is easily the best but nobody mentions the button near the gear lever marked with a P . what's it for?

I have 2019 Niro 4: that button is for parking distance alert. There’s also a button on right console for detecting objects at corners when reversing. Useful in supermarket car parks. I call it the ‘cat detector’ 😊

Hybrids might well already be on the way out - esp in London. The plan is to prevent them from driving within the UELZ as they are as polluting as normal ICE vehicles. The future is BEV maybe?
0.29 CD is the same as the new Bentley Flying Spur that’s impressive. I’m strongly considering this car and moving away from Ford as they don’t have a car in their line up to match this. I currently have a Ford Focus STX it’s a OK car but the MPG for a 1.0lL 3 pot engine is not that good and the KIA Niro is mightily impressive in fact so far I have not seen one negative review. I would opt for the top spec Niro 4 as the heated rear seat plus other features make this car a great front runner not even BMW, Audi, Mercedes can match this car when it comes to spec and price . Also this engine designed by James Atkinson way back in the day is reliable and extremely fuel efficient and when you add the electric motor it’s game over for most of the other brands for cars in this segment
Hi Matt, I love your channel reviewing old classic cars but you're a complete fish out of water in a new car! Of course you can turn off the Lane Assist although you may have to do it each time you start the car as I have to in my Tiguan 2021. I also turn off the auto stop/start each time because I don't like it. I understand you don't like SUV's or automatics but the comfort and convenience of the drive are unrivalled. That's why they are so popular!
Yes you can turn lane keeping off every time, but how annoying is that? What a waste of everyones time!
Now Ive done nearly 10k in an auto, I can say its been boring at best but annoying more often, I honestly dont know why people put up with it, and as for SUVs - smaller boot space in a bigger car with worse MPG and handling...apart from towing and off road in proper 4x4 ones there are no actual advantages

I think I would now go for a full electric and get away from the internal combustion engine. Can’t afford it so it all hypothetical. Have solar panels on the roof so could home charge most of the time. Solar very efficient here in Tasmania. Would have a petrol car also if range was a problem but could do most of our motoring in an electric car. Maybe one day.......

I haven't had a car for 35 years since I didn't like to drive but the Niro takes so many of the little driver details out of my hands (and feet) that it makes it so much more fun to drive. I really enjoy driving this car. I like all the safety features. I can't recommend this car highly enough!

Any idea how high the front seat cushions are?
Recently got 2019 version: front seats are adjustable in lots of ways. I liked how they don’t have a high side ‘ridge’ so easier to slide in, and tilt control means no digging into your thighs.

Kia does the modern, sensible at thing very well. A friend runs a saloon as a taxi and it has been totally reliable. I'm still not convinced by the hybrid thing and certainly not SUVs. Kia cars are great though.
I thought the new Kia Xceed hybrid had a manual box?
The Xceed Hybrid is 6 Speed DCT Automatic only, the ICE petrol is manual or auto and the diesel manual only.

SUVs/CUVs confuse me. Matt explained it a little, most are simply hatchbacks on stilts with high roofs. How does this help anything? Nobody wears top hats anymore and why does an urban vehicle need ground clearance? Most are more expensive than the regular hatchback on which they're based so what am I missing here?
Why does an urban vehicle need ground clearance? Well, I dunno about UK metro streets but in many cities here in the U.S. potholes are a plague! What I want is ground clearance that is devoted to providing additional suspension travel to absorb some of those impacts. I sure wish Citroen was still in the U.S. But, more than that, I still wish Citroen was Citroen.
@@xqqqme I've not been to the US but have noticed on videos how crappy US roads can be. Jay Lenos Garage is a good example, he's bouncing and crashing all over the place. Strange for a country that sent man to the moon can't make a simple road properly.
@@CathodeRayNipplez The potholes and frost heaves are not from a failure to *_make_* them properly (though even that is not simple). It's from a failure to *_maintain_* them. In the U.S. that responsibility is largely up to the states and the cities...and at the state level, they would rather cut-ribbons on new construction than maintain what they already have.

I guess certainly room for a space saver but maybe not a full size one. Space saver would be better than a bottle of goo anyway.

I’m sure it’s nice enough and I’m sure there’s a lot worse, but it doesn’t cut it for me, too many of these SUVs around and often not as practical as a good estate car. Yeh give me a spare wheel any day, the spray things are hopeless. Not sure if it’s your camera but there’s a lot of rumbling in the sound .
True it is kind of an suv but back in my day we would have called it a wagon or hatchback. But most importantly it does not look like a hybrid or prius.
I found that my insurance classifies it as an ‘estate’.

What benefits to all this hybrid complexity in the real world? As an aside, I vaguely recall citreon having some kind of "Dynamo" alternator system eons ago, this would boost engine power. Not sure if I am having "recovered memory syndrome", though.
These exterior aesthetic decisions make me wish we were back in the late 2000's/early 2010's before they started feeling the need to cram "futuristic" details into every exposed surface. Also a damn shame about that black interior; here in Florida anything darker than tan or mid grey just turns into a power-wasting hell box furnace of doom after sitting outside for a bit. I'd miss my Honda's nice beige. Other than that, seems exceedingly nice.
Nice but I would go with the fully EV, would be perfect for my needs. Would probably leased a Kia e-Niro a year ago if I had anticipated Covid, saves me loads of money, no commuting, no bought lunches etc.

Annoyingly I was in the market for a new car Nov 19 and the Niro was top of my list, perfect to access, drive and exit with my spinal problems, heated leather standard in top model etc
Loved everything about it BUT
Garage told me were so popular couldn't have one, same with second choice the Toyota C-HR.
Kia website said in black and white it could be 2021 before hybrid Niro would be available again!
So I went Seat
My mate was able to get Niro Hybrid Feb 2020 🥺

Hope you got one! I recently got a 2019 Kia 4: one previous owner, low mileage for age. Absolutely loving it (and I have a spare - slimline - wheel, as well as the stupid gunk kit).
