  • Have you ever seen a 1200 HP 260 ci LS engine full throttle and full load run for 5 minutes? I think not! Would you repeat again for a total of 12 Runs? Well that's what Tom's customer required of his new design of boat engines! This is a totally new engine design for NRE. A future video will describe this engine's unique build. Stay tuned to the NRE channel.

      @Steven Ross-watt Agreed. A 5-min wide open test is kind of useless for most racing (except apparently boat racing, which makes sense). I would not be surprised if IMSA racecar engines would fail this test, and they are some of the more reliable race engines (because of the duration of IMSA races I reckon).

      @ray_collins Před 5 lety +14

      There's a lot of endurance engine builders that dyno at those levels for hours. If you're doing stuff like Baja, NASCAR, or Offshore Endurance, you really will be running WOT for minutes (or hours) at a time, for a whole day, and then again the next week. Then again, those engines are way bigger than 260ci.

    Seeing all the other engines combinations you have built I was confident this one would pass the five minute test. Boat engines take a beating especially in rough water where the prop loads and unloads when the boat grabs air. I think the boat this engine will go in will be a force to recon with. Nice work!

The reason water cooled headers are used on some boats is for noise mostly and where heat is a problem like on a normal inboard motor setup. TURBORYAN - I know, right? If VW can make those ridiculous lumps run at full power for extended periods - how is running an LS for only 5mins considered an achievement?
      Full power /RPM running is the NORM for powerboat engines - routinely running for an hour or more, every time out. Time and time again.

    That was the sketchyiest most awesome demonstration of a engine builder I've ever seen I dont think anyone else has ever done that . No one except mabe banks he is crazy as hell just to try it.

      If agree he's the best turbo LS engine builder out there. Hell her built that v16 LS for that Devel car that never got built. Steve Morris is another builder that's pretty much on Nelson's level. He's got some videos of engines he's built. But I'd like to see more builders try a challenge like this!

      alanjrkaminski I have multiple times and it’s built by Steve Morris so maybe you should be the one looking up the video. Yes, Steve runs Nelson’s mirror turbos but he is NOT the engine builder. Check your facts bud

      Andrea Sanai yea I was thinking that but it is Nelson racing engines so a 800 to 1200 hp engine is pretty low compared to some of the other insane engine builds of his he would have a pretty kickass dyno I bet 🤙

      A dyno could just be a big propeller in a tank of water to create resistance, the water would heat up slowly soaking the energy from the prop shaft. Torque and RPM is all that is needed to get a power measurement

    • @philipmacduffie7612
      @philipmacduffie7612 Před 5 lety

      @@idgaf5252 You have to have some means of measuring reactionary force. If it was a prop how would you measure torque? Since the work done to the fluid would be quite hard to quantify unless you measured load in the driveshaft.
      That said the prop would also need to change load to allow you to hold the engine at a given speed which is a pretty useful function of an engine dyno.
      The hydraulic absorber accomplishes all that with minimal fuss and thus the reason most engine dynos are made this way.

    • @philipmacduffie7612
      @philipmacduffie7612 Před 5 lety +1

      @@carltonbankz9273 Not as simple as it sounds a 13 second sweep requires high peak flow. A long duration test needs thermal capacity. 1200hp would raise 400 gallons of water to about 150f in 7 minutes. I'm making some guesses here. Tom without a doubt has series large absorbers to handle that power for sweep tests.
