Here's my thoughts on the new Nintendo Switch OLED (Not Pro)

- Nintendo announced their new Switch OLED, with a better and brighter screen, an improved kickstand, Base 64GB internal storage, new white joy-cons, and a couple other quality of life improvements. The unfortunate reality is that this is not the NEW Nintendo Switch Pro that we were waiting for, and there are no upgrades to the processor, or any 4K resolution bump or graphics upgrades, which is kind of disappointing. Here's my thoughts on the matter.

@@DammitJeff Hey Jeff! When you do make that video reviewing the OLED Switch, can you check if everything is interchangable? For example old switch with new dock, or even swapping components like the back housing between each switch. I assume if the internals have been kept the same, I imagine you could just upgrade your old switch with the new fancy kickstand and the new dock. I think it was mentioned that the dock will be available by itself at some point through Nintendo’s website.

Love how you just got straight to the point and explained everything we know as of now. Personally I got really excited about this announcement but hearing everyone’s thoughts and opinions sorta changed my mind.

Here’s my thing, I don’t think it’s worth buying a whole new switch, but if you don’t have one this might as well be the one you buy. Personally I wasn’t disappointed by this though, it’s just a better version of the original switch, but nothing so amazing current switch owners feel like they need to drop their current switch. It’s the leakers fault for getting people’s hopes up, and I feel that’s shaped some people’s negative views on the console. I’m honestly neutral, switch OLED is great for new users, but if you already have one there’s not much a point. (unless you exclusively play handheld)

I will definitely be picking it up, lately I’ve been playing more in handheld mode. The only time I play docked is when I have friends over, or whenever I want to play Smash Bros
I think I’ll stick with my current switch. Since it’s an animal crossing edition, and also because I already get headaches if I play with the brightness too high (which is why I’ve stopped using playing in my tv), so I feel like adding a “better” display will just exacerbate that (assuming I can even tell the difference at all because I keep my brightness so low). But my big question is, will the joycons come in more colors now (like lavender and pastel pink) so I don’t have to learn how to do a shell swap? Because if so, I might buy those.
actually if you are getting headaches from brightness, i would get the oled, i used to get headaches from my old phone, but my new one uses an oled, which helped alot

I’m bummed that it’s not coming until October as I likely won’t be able to get one anytime soon, but if it had been a September release I would’ve strongly considered it as I’ll be only playing handheld for the next year. Normally I’m a mix of both handheld and docked though.
I really don’t see a point in me buying this, I mostly use it in docked mode but I might buy the dock if it is separate.
If you play handheld mostly, don't have a switch yet then thats who this is for.

chances of you being able to grab the oled panel and bang it into the old switch? i mean alot of bezel on the none oled models so if theyve done away with the bezel to accomodate the 7inch screen over the 6.2 it could possibly fit? and if so people who have the balls to go through with it could be highly rewarded just a thought

As for the move from Nintendo is actually not surprising at all. The chip shortage is not even clear if it will be fixed for 2022, so no reason for them to opt for a higher-tier chip or even go as far as to scratch 4k. Also, 4k on a handheld or with the capabilities of scaling when docked is absolutely ridiculous so finding a good battery and chip that can handle those things is kind of tricky. Even if you say smartphones blah blah, Nintendo as a company has never sold, or at least for the past consoles, their hardware for a loss, hence why it is so hard for them to jump and say hey we are going to enter the chip shortage race like Microsoft and Sony, which have always sold their hardware for a loss. So, I know it is disappointing that no new upscaled revision, but it was inevitable, they as a company have never cared and will never care for anything else besides money, as every other company. So, it is a smart move to offer a more "premium" hardware attacking the necessities of their player base, which lets be real the majority plays on handheld mode. So, if they are going to upgrade it will be either for the Switch 2 or past 2022, which again seems a little bit farfetched since their competition might start seeing some great selling spikes on 2023, to which they will have 6 years with the switch.
I have v1 switch, i dont play in dock mode. Very rarely anyways. A bigger screen and speakers and better battery life after 3 years. I could scoop it up possibly

Do you think people should upgrade if your battery on your switch is degraded? I get an hour and a half out of animal crossing and like 50 minutes out of botw (and mine is a launch day switch so the battery life was already doodoo so replacing the battery wont be much of a change for me)

after a model improving the handheld side of things You'd think they would put out a model focusing on the docked side of things or at least improve it a little bit

We just got a Swtich for the first time and I was going to splash out on the OLED but lack of inventory made the decision for me, I got a black and grey older model, saved 50$, and have no regrets.
I think imma trade in my switch lite, and pick this up. I loved my lite since launch day, especially for its handheld superiority, but this one seems to make the lite irrelevant, aside from the price point. I’m also curious if the white joy-con rails from the skyward sword joycons (and others) match perfectly with these ones. It’d be annoying if they don’t.

Personally because I play on a lite, that’s the only reason I’d get it. I do miss the ability to play on tv and obviously the lite doesn’t do that so in that sense the only reason I’d get it would be because I don’t have a regular switch anyways. Still kind of disappointing:(

I like the video but keep mind scalper are a thing and if you sell your switch now better hope you can preorder it now. Otherwise you take the chance of not getting another one right away unless scalper don't hop on the switch as well since that's already happened with ps5 and the series s/x

So I made the terrible mistake of getting the switch lite... (I do play in handheld but the joy cons are still too good)

The only way I'd even consider buying is if i plan to travel, which would mean that my current Switch goes with me on trips while the new White Switch stays at home and connected through the LAN port and that's assuming I'm even paying for the online subscription lol.
I use mine 90% docked TV mode and will probably get another one just because I want to turn my old one into a home brew device.

I got the Oled due to it being my first switch ever.
Overall looking through the reviews, a majority of people are saying that if you are a first time switch owner then the Oled is worth it, Its not worth it if you already own the older version :3

My switch never leaves my place so there is no reason for me to upgrade. It looks great but Im sure I will be able to pick up both the white joycons and dock for my OG Switch (It has been confirmed that the new dock will work with the old Switch) We will get a "pro" but it won't be until (Nintendo's) next gen.
If it has cooler mods support I'll be upgrading my switch, if not I'll stay right where I'm at.

As someone who owns a switch already i don't think I'll be getting this one, UNLESS... they come up with a special, cool looking, zelda or animal crossing edition. Also, i like to know that white joycons might be an option for when my joycons decide to fail me 😂
