Having been in the airline industry 27 years as a flight attendant I rather like this song ~ kinda fun kinda crazy ~ which was much of the career of flying all over this planet 😜 ✈️✈️ I will always love PLANES. ✈️ 😉
Best Album ever( 1989)... Even this was before my time i often listen to it. This song is a great example for a kid who has hidden talents and only the girl next to him noticed he's kind of special
The tour of this album was excellent. I went three different times because I felt this would be the final flight of Jefferson Airplane and I was right. I had seen all of them way before this tour in various groups: Jefferson Starship (Spitfire tour), The KBC Band, Jefferson Starship (new lineup but with Paul) and the infamous Starship at MTVs 1985s NYE Bash in NYC. Grace sounded excellent at the tour for this album. I especially remember "Freedom" and her soaring vocals.
Man I wished I could have gone. The closest show was Atlanta - and I lived in central Florida! I was 17. I did however see hot tuna at janis landing a year or so before and so glad I did.
"I love planes, experimental aircraft I love planes, jet, jet, jet aircraft" They actually sing these words. They actually get Grace Slick to sing these words!
Likely someone's plane loving child was held at ransom knowing how the industry was ran back then. Some mob boss hated tf outta JA and wrote these lyrics for them
To the negative commenters, guess you had to be there. I had goosebumps upon MTV's initial release of this video, seeing all these hippie greats reunited and harmonizing. I still feel the chills at the intro when each musician is re-introduced to us and then we see them together-- Jorma, Jack, Grace, Paul, Marty. For me, it was like a Beatles reunion, where, sure, the songs were not going to be as strong, but that's almost besides the point, as JA is an institution in the pantheon of rock. This greatness was made palpable by the thrill of seeing them live on this tour. My jaw was dropped seeing them all on stage together. I was elated 😂. Just shush, all you negative nellies with your shallow cynicism. You're killing my buzz, dudes. Stay groovy and peace out.
Grace Slick was turning 50 when she and her fellow band members made this video, and she looked just as good as she did when she was approaching thirty.
At first I didn't know what to think of this, but as I learned more about the band, this song is just an example of a Kantner "quirky song", the kind he even had two or three of on even the Jefferson Starship albums during their commercial period (like Stairway to Cleveland, etc)
Haven't heard this song in 30 years. Never knew there was a video. 1:09 Creeped out by "Howard Hughes" sneaking into a kid's room. Jorma is damn sexy in chaps 🤣.
Awesome, uplifting video in many ways. Here's a band that fell apart in the early 70s, said a lot of negative to each other, but........Lo and Behold in 1989, they came back for a very good album. LIke Grace Slick said in her book about this album that gave us this song.....coming together "completed a lot of circles" and was a positive experience for every member of the band plus their millions of fans.
This song may have simplistic lyrics, but somehow it’s arranged very well when they sing it and it has a positive message. Nothing compared to songs of old JA, respectively. But still worthy of any fan to add to their collection. There’s a few hidden gems on the album too.
I remember when this album came out and I played the hell out of it ! The album wasn't their best but it was still enjoyable and beautiful to see the Airplane back together again. Later I must admit I was feeling a bit guilty for liking the album amongst the negative criticism. My favorite part when the album came out is when Jefferson Airplane played at the San Francisco Golden Gate Park around May of 1989. What was really funny is I offered some pot and Southern Comfort to the people around me at the park and NOBODY WANTED ANY 🤣
THE OFFICIAL THEME SONG OF THE 2024 EAA AIRVENTURE AIRSHOW IN OSHKOSH WISCONSIN from July 24th to July 30th which I’ll be flying in! (Why smh for this song?) This song gets me PUMPED AF and it’s very catchy with a great hook!
This should be the theme song for the EAA Airventure Air Show in Oshkosh Wisconsin[which I am VERY excited to fly T6 in for the 5th time] July-28th thru August-3rd this year! I have recently seen this video for the first time and I am still laughing hard at how cheesy this video is!!! The more I listen to this great song the more pumped up I'm getting for the airshow! See you in the air and at the nightly campfire! IT'S OFFICIAL- THIS SONG IS NOW MAKING A COMEBACK!
@@TheRunner75 That being said, it's a product of the times: the audience would have thought it was kinda strange at the time if the production sounded like a 1972 folk record.
I like this song The plane in the background (and hanging from the boys ceiling is the H-4 Hercules or "spruce goose" although it was made from birch. It only made one flight.
This video was filmed in Long Beach when the Hughes HK-1 Hercules (AKA "Spruce Goose") was still on display there. The plane was built in Culver City during WWII then trucked and assembled on Terminal Island. It's only flight occurred off the coast of Long Beach on Nov. 2, 1947. The plane is a So Cal creation and it's a shame that it ended up in Oregon.
When this was released in 1989 I couldn't wait to go to Tower Records to purchase the album. I knew how cringe worthy Planes was but hoped the album as a whole would be better. I was already in my early 20's and had been exposed to late 60's early 70's Jefferson Airplane, Jefferson Starship and then 80's Starship. I haven't listen to the album much and my copy looks as new as when I purchased it almost 29 yrs ago. I have all the their original 60's and 70's vinyl thanks to my dad. Maybe it's time to give JA1989 a spin.
I caught this reunion tour in 1989 at the Garden State arts center in Holmdale New Jersey then I got the chance to see them again in 1992 at the Brendon Burn arena and I had the privilege of shaking Jorma's hand and sat at the front table while he played my Genesis request at the Turning Point in Piermont New York 1993... Boom 😎
It was a nice song, not in their "classic" style but whoever expected them to re-make some "Volunteers" album was clearly out of his skull. Nothing really special but I did enjoy having them back one more time. Sometimes, it's simple like that.
Whoever of the remaining band members at the time though this would be good for anything except a fast buck was/is fucking crazy. I love and respect this band, but this was so shit. Respect to Spencer Dryden for not going ahead with this blatant sell out of a reunion. R.I.P Skip, Spencer, Paul, Signe, and Marty.
Matthew Todd Adcock As Jefferson airplane they were great. As Jefferson starship they still had some good songs, STARSHIP SUCKED? As the band tours now with Cathy Richardson up front and only one original member they don't even preform starship music. They even apologize when they do we built this city, but they do it because it was the only number one hit the band had, and for some unknown reason, some people want to hear it. Saw them last year, and damn they do a good job. Cathy is awesome. So glad they realize what songs need to be left behind.
Yes I agree. Plus it`s very obvious in this video that they aren`t taking this very seriously at all. Sad but true. You would think they would take some pride in their music after all these years but they don`t.
You don’t get it. Yes, they were 500% over the music business by this point... but when have they ever taken themselves seriously? ... Why would they start getting serious 25 years into their careers? Their laid back style is what fans appreciated about them. And those are the fans they did this album for. This song is from the JA reunion album in ‘89. So even though I know they couldn’t have given two shits if the album did well or not, if it put a few extra dollars in their pockets I’m thrilled because they deserve every last penny for the fond memories their music has brought to generations of fans.
lets get rid of the bad evil comments. this is jefferson at its best as always right there with a hundred other bands. good music is infinate I thank the million stars up in the sky
The 1989 self-titled album was the only studio album not represented on 2005's The Essential Jefferson Airplane, even though Epic, which released the 1989 album, became a sister label to RCA, which released the band's earlier albums, a year before when Sony Music merged with BMG to form Sony BMG, now once again known simply as Sony Music.
Am I the only JA fan to like this song? Ok, it's a tipical 80's product, overproduced, overplayed and they don't seem to take it seriously. But, wtf, I like it, it's gleeful and that's it.
I like it but then I liked Kantners Planet Earth Rock N Roll Orchestra album, the SEQUEL to the original sci-fi masterpiece Blows Against the Empire. The guy was way out there.
This song is a strange mix of 60s innocence, 70s rock, 80s harmonies, 90s production values, all mixed in with a progressive lyrical style which isn't quite Genesis or ELP, but still is very very listenable. Sure, they were hoping trading on the name would mask some of the faults in this composition, and to a certain extent it has, but it's still appealing in its own, unusual way. The whole album is one of those only a fan could love, but I still give this song regular airplay on my radio show.
This is a good song for the Jefferson Airplane. Their band's name is the Jefferson Airplane, and they're singing about planes. LOL. I give this video a thumbs-up.
planes is the one song from this album you could hold up their with all the 60's and 70's starship stuff planes was a minor hit actually probly this is the song they include on a anthology compilation
I highly recommend going to a rocket launch at Kennedy Space Center. It may not be as visually cool as some acrobatic plane flying, but you get to experience strong infrasonics and can better appreciate the work aerospace engineers do to avoid destructive vibrations in a large rocket. It's one of the most bizarre feelings I have felt.
+Jay Flippen Your are so right Sir. I was fortunate to witness the launch of Apollo 17. I do not have the vocabulary to describe the awe and the emotions I felt. It was almost like a religious experience. I also got to watch STS 1, 2, 4 and 5 land at Edwards Air Force Base in the early 1980's. The double sonic boom of the Shuttle would resonate through out your body. I have been working in the aerospace sector for over 40 years now and I am a private pilot and am going flying today ( my grandson wants to go). I'm semi-retired now and am an A&P IA. I retired from Lockheed-Martin in 2005. Now days I just do annual inspections on general aviation aircraft. Also, I fly as much as I can.
Remember, kids: when a stranger enters your bedroom in the middle of the night and beckons you to follow him, it couldn't possibly do you any harm. And if that's the little kid's dream, he's got issues. Honestly, if this kid's dreaming about anyone entering his bedroom, it's Grace Slick. Stop scowling. You know I'm right. I also find it too funny that they had to pan down and show the man wearing a badge that points out he's Howard Hughes. You know, lest anyone confuses him with Clark Gable. Because honestly, he's a dead ringer for Gable, and doesn't really look all that Hughes-like.
I remember when this album came out. I hoped very much that it would be good, but I knew it was well past the time that they could do something excellent as The Jefferson Airplane. I even saw them when they toured on this, knowing it would be the last time. I never could stand this video. A lot of goofy stuff going on, and Jorma Kaukonen clearly doesn't want to have anything to do with it. Grace Slick's bedroom eyes make it all worth it, though.
these guys took a great step away from the embarrasment involved with the "we built this city" garbage. Nice. saw this at radio city music hall. ,,,as well as classic airplane thingz like white rabbit. made a great evening for me and my companion: julianne. ..1989
Agreed. Melody, lyrics and the JA soaring vocals are just classic. A real throwback to earlier times. But the "spoken" vocals by Paul don't gel with the musical scene of 89. They sound dated given the year this was released. Still....I bought the LP the day it came out.
So your saying lyrics about planes by a band with airplane its name kills it. The cover of the biplane on After bathing at Baxters must really throw you.
@@timwilson3124 nope, I'm saying elements of the lyrics are extremely goofy and cheesy. Like they wrote a song for a Disney movie. Hey just an opinion man.
Say all you will about the song but hearing Grace sing again plus the harmonies, wow.

No matter what that first plane is the Spruce Goose, which should immediately make the guy Howard Hughes
or maybe people just dont love plaaaaaaanes
MisterObjectivity yes it is more like a child molestor’s fantasy film
everything you rely on the farms, comes from planes. I am really hoping for the other song, too, Starships! that would make another great one...
RIP PAUL KANTNER............
these guys took a great step away from the embarrasment involved with the "we built this city" garbage. Nice. saw this at radio city music hall. ,,,as well as classic airplane thingz like white rabbit. made a great evening for me and my companion: julianne. ..1989
Cocaine is a hell of a drug...
+hfontanez98 these guys might've took too much acid back in the day lol
Haha fucking awesome
They were making great music when they were hitting the acid hard. Cocaine wrecked the band, at least according to Balin anyway.
Lol
@@Byzantine41 HAHA
Do they say 'I love planes, sensual aircraft' ?!? what did I just listen to.
“Experimental aircraft” is one of the more meaningful lines, referring to the bands early years.
Melody is actually typical Jefferson, it's the lyrics that kill it. Grace has her usual come to bed eyes so it's all good
Agreed.
Melody, lyrics and the JA soaring vocals are just classic. A real throwback to earlier times.
But the "spoken" vocals by Paul don't gel with the musical scene of 89.
They sound dated given the year this was released.
Still....I bought the LP the day it came out.
I'm here for
So your saying lyrics about planes by a band with airplane its name kills it. The cover of the biplane on After bathing at Baxters must really throw you.
@@travisbickle3841 I'm 19 lol
@@timwilson3124 nope, I'm saying elements of the lyrics are extremely goofy and cheesy. Like they wrote a song for a Disney movie. Hey just an opinion man.
Ya know, the more you listen to it, the more enjoyable this is.
Why do I feel like they wrote it for people listening in 2020?
The first time I heard this song is when I was three years old and I thought it would suck this bad
Cool story, bro.
