Them Bones has to be one of the greatest riffs of all time.
'NUFF SAID! \m/\m/
Certainly one of my favourite ever to play on guitar!
@@davidpggarrett The best of chug chug riffs.
Absolutely iconic, honestly a lot of Cantrell riffs are all time greats. Man is called the riff lord for a reason
@Jim The Boomer both are legendary, I’d go with them bones but we die young is amazing too and an incredible opener. Jerry is a god, wrote both those songs lyrics and all plus pretty much almost all their other hits outside of man in the box and angry chair
You forgot “we die young” in my opinion one of the heaviest riffs in history!
Love the song, love the riff, but heaviest in history? Not even close dude
Yep we die young should be in this list.
Jerry's on my very short list of favorite guitarists. Thanks so much for sharing.
My favorite AIC riff was from “Died”
“I could climb until I reach where angels reside, ask around to find out where the junkies applied”
So sludgy and doomy
no it's not
Killer track, but not a big fan of his tone on that riff. They say that layne didn’t have any teeth left when he recorded it
@@austinbourdages No one says that.
@@Josh-it6uy fuck off.
@@Josh-it6uy actually it is said
Jerry Cantrell is one of my all time favorite guitarists. His playing is bluesy, but he has a way of making it sound fresh and tasteful. Something most bluesy players fail to do. His work on the first 2 AiC albums are nothing short of brilliant.
that put you down riff is a massive mastodon of a riff, truly an absolute unit
MASTODON! \m/\m/
It sounds like Warrant to me. The opposite of Mastodon
Not many other youtubers I've seen get Jerry's tone and style the right way you've been playing. As well people often mess up the Them Bones intro riff but you as well played it the right way, major props my dude. Keep playing like a badass!
"Rain When I Die" and the live version of "Nutshell" are some of my fav Cantrell riffs. Good job!
Great tones. Cantrell has always been one of my favourite players. Like a mix of Tony Iommi and David Gilmour.
That's a really neat way to describe him!
Obie doomy chunk with bluesy solos. That’s how I’ve always though of it haha
Been waiting for this video since I saw it in the comments! Not disappointed at all!
Perfect timing. I was just watching the alice in chains headbangers ball episodes. Lol nostalgia. Instalike.
Thanks for the upload man. AIC is one of my favorite bands, and not many people can write riffs like Jerry Cantrell.
Bro, I swear to God I sang heartbreaker exactly when you started to sing it
Hahaha mee too. Made me laugh when he did it too!
Although he plays very bluesy notes he has a unique approach to his riff writing plus incorporating some chromaticism. I can hear a little Black Sabbath influence......but really what guitarist wasn't 😊. Them Bones sounded killer heavy👍
6:13 into the void and 8:49 electric funeral 😊
The tone is really good!
opeth and alice in chains. subscribed!
Welcome!
Love your channel Greg...I check in periodically to gauge my progress and I am always happy to learn! Thanks for everything!!!!!!
Thanks for breaking down those rifs. You always come up with new and different tutorials. Keep them coming.
Rain When I Die, Godsmack, Dam That River, Bleed the Freak, Junkhead, Nutshell, Hate to Feel...too many fantastic AIC guitar riffs, melodies, and solos to choose just five!
Great video man ! The selection of the riffs was awesome and I appreciated the twist at the end ! Also you make the viewer very at ease watching your video, I don't know why but it was great watching until the end.
Props again man ! Cheers 😉🍻
Love the energy and it sounds so good! Love your vids
Spot on tune, man.
Thank you for this video
This is awesome, man. Thanks a bunch.
I love AIC but haven't heard Facelift since I had it on cassette tape. I must buy it again (on CD tho LOL)
My personal favourite band :)
Love AiC.. Awesome video.. subbed! Them Bones tone was amazing.. that Friedman amp seems great :)
Jerry has some killer riffs, here are some of my favorites. What are some of yours? Also, if you want more of the JJ Jr in action, please enjoy my demo --> czcams.com/video/CQNDnysJUWA/video.html
What a great tone!!!
My absolute dream guitar! She's such a beaut man. Love your channel, such a wealth of knowledge 🙏🏼🤘🏼
Awesome Selection Facelift and Dirt are the two best grunge albums imho closely followed by Core
Them Bones is one of my favorite songs of all time... This is the 5 different way that I've learnt to play it. The chug at the start anyway...
This was absolutely sick. Thank you very much!
yes, i was hoping you would do this greg! thanx man! love jerry cantrells playing and his guitar sound! again and junkhead are 2 of my fav aic riffs, both really simple but so heavy and catchy! them bones definitely had to be on this list though!
This man is the Kakashi of tones
.....love your videos man...spiral out...
that amp is killer, good playing, Cantrell never overplays, and has kick ass feel! nice examples
You're getting absolutely massive tone out of that Friedman. Very nice!
Great picks!
Always found a stretch in the main/opening riff to "I Stay Away" to be very hard for me to do, harder still without skipping a beat.
That amp sounds unbelievably good at such a low volume. Amazing. Worth every penny.
Thanks Greg for all you do. I've learned a lot from your videos. Any chance you'll tackle "Hollow" in the future? Badass tune!
i really like this series too greg, more of these would be awesome with other great bands!
I love that tone so much. Amazing
I love the old stuff, but actually Id love to see you tackle some more of the new album, The One You Know, Red Giant, Drone and So Far Under are all really cool songs - Red Giant and Drone being my personal fav 2 i think.
There are some amazing riffs on TDPDH and BGWTB as well like A Looking in View (the "hiding in the darkness under" part), Stone, Lab Monkey, Phantom Limb
put you down = hardest riff in the aic catalogue. dimebag-level alternate picking going on there. cantrell stopped writing hard riffs after that i think.
Riffs like that really doesn't fit their music. Sounds way too 80s.
@@TheSectric That's because they originally started off as glam bands in the late 80s
@@TheSectric strongly disagree, they fit well the band just evolved over time into a much darker eerie band. Facelift is a classic record just because they change doesn’t mean their early stuff doesn’t fit, it was a different time when they made that album. You can hear Jerry’s heavy blues influence a lot on that album
Karl Delaney technically it was more Layne starting off as glam, Jerry was just filling in because him and Layne made a deal to play in each other’s bands before forming AIC.
@@KarlDelaney99 Cantrell wasnt in that band
Nice work man, Jerry is a god, one of the best riff writers ever and one of the absolute best songwriters in history, goddamn legend
'Man In The Box'-one of the easy lookin yet tough to play odd count riff by cantrell,Rain when I Die riff,Angry Chair Riff,Bleed The Freak Riff shouldv'e been in the List
Oooh another resource to learn Cantrell riffs and licks? Subbed.
Dude I just wanna say that you are the fucking man. I have learned so much from you, about how to not only play songs from my favorite artists, but the theory behind it. I am self taught because I can't afford lessons. So CZcams and books are my go-to. You help me and a hell of a lot more people out a lot. Much appreciated sir.
Their riffs are not blistering so manageable to learn . Love them
Hearing you play these honestly made me realize how much the hair metal influence stuck to Jerry. Put You Down straight up sounds like a Mick Mars riff
More please🤘 🙏
Fantastic video :3
Jerry while not a "shredder" is and always will be one of my favorites. Alice in chains as a whole. Wish Layne could've kicked his addiction and was still here with all of us. May he rest in peace
awesome❤
Does anybody else hear the into the void intro riff in sunshine?
That is a punishing tone! Great video.
Waiting for part 2, 3 and 4. Please and thank you.
Yes! Amp sounds amazing and great tutorial on them AIC riffs. Nothing about this sucks. Great Job my man. Now gimme my amp back.....LOL! Much Love!
8:36 You had me at AHHHHHH!
Haha I was playing the blues fill part the "regular" 2-3-4 way. This made the riff incredibly easy after trying to roll with that. Although the verse changed to more difficult with that second fret on the 6th string in there.
I think Check My Brain and Would? would've fit here just as well.
It's great to see you using kiesel guitars. That is a nice , great sounding guitar. And I'm sure it plays really well.
Very happy with my CS3s!
Great vid. Is this straight into the amp or through pedal chain?. Amp sounds great. Thanks
My favourite AiC riff is “Last of My Kind” from Black Gives Way to Blue album. It’s such a weird riff, but sounds so heavy. Only Jerry can write something like that. I’ve been trying to learn that riff but could never nail it. There’s something odd about the run through and then trying to repeat it that i can never time perfectly. Would you be able to help with that riff?
Awesome list, would’ve loved to see “rain when I die” though. That’s my favorite Alice In Chains song.
Ahh! You make it look so easy!
Never thought of Sunshine would be here. I love that song. But you missed the chorus riffs which is my favorite. You should cover the full song, loved your tone.
Just saw aic live with korn. They were great.
I've always played the Dirt intro on the G and B strings.
That amp though🤯
Jerry is a superb songwriter.
Great tone! Did you have the amp connected to a miced cab or to a speaker simulation software?
Ran it into the Torpedo Live with some ML Sound Lab IRs
Although super simple, would've loved to see Man In The Box too ;)
I love that Guitar hero using and the sound of the pickups. I got to ask what's look at our brand because it sounds as tough as a Les Paul.
Its a Kiesel.
That one riff around the 6:33 mark sounds a lot like Into The Void by Black Sabbath!🤘
Sea of Sorrow is awesome riff
What cabinet and speakers were you using for this?
No one has mentioned It Ain't Like That?? Easily one of their best, heaviest and most interesting riffs.
That Double J is a beast! Sunshine is one of my favorite JC riffs, nicely done sir.
James Allen it kinda sounds like a Motley Crue riff, like something mick Mars or slash would have came up with.
Nice..
Can you tell us your thoughts on the amp? Every clip I have seen of that amp sounds amazing
That's because it's amazing. Everyone needs more Friedman in their life.
@@axeofcreation lol that's true! How does Tool sound out of it? Love your videos man, thanks.
8:34 ......HAHA! "You had me at hello" Ummmm yep! Song just kills!
Cover Would please.
You forgot Stone.
I love that song and almost out that in this video. Perhaps I'll make a full lesson out of it. Great post Layne era track!
I love those and also WHAT THE HELL HAVE I... And the Classisc, people aren´t foo, Man in The Box and Would Riff´s are amazing
Yes! I commented this request on the Nirvana video! Sweet!
JC sure is a riff machine. Question about tunings Greg: what makes something in "standard" tuning? What do we mean by standard if it can be dropped or flatted? Noob question Im sure but thanks in advance.
Standard is A440, if memory serves correctly the recording and radio companies needed a standard tuning so that way there was some comparability across instruments and genre, however there used to be different pitches depending on the composer, orchestra, or location.
Saying like "E standard" or "Eb standard" is just a shorthand way of saying that it's the same intervals of notes as standard but tuned down a half step or a whole step or what have you.
And then standard as compared to say, Open D, which would sound like a D chord if you played all strings open, or DADGAd, where you have a kind of middle eastern sounding tuning.
A standard tuning with guitar refers to the intervals between strings and how patterns and shapes work. A standard tuning makes your shapes and chords all the same across the board as you learned them, where as a non standard tuning will change what frets you play to make those shapes
Thanks for the replies gents.
Yes, what @SweetOdinsRavens said. Spot on.
I like rain till I die
1 dislike? Someone couldnt play "put ya down"
hahaha!
Cantrell = guitar god that blended blues, metal and grunge like no other. He is beyond grunge in terms of intensity and his half step tuning is also unique. And then the melodies…
Amazing.
Maybe guitar solo and It ain't like that guitar riff
What is the song 12 25
We Die Young by far and Rooster…:)
That first song is from when they hadn’t completely let go of the hair metal.
it is 3am here. whats going on man are you tryin to wake up my neighbors?
put you doooooooown
Anyone remember his tool videos, good ol days, not that these videos aren't great.
Again and Dam my river are my favorites but every song is a masterpiece
Id say it aint like that is the heaviest from the early facelift-Dirt era
Hahahahaha I love when u randomly sing
Hard to keep me contained, haha
axeofcreation holy shit u replied haha big fan dude you’ve taught me a ton of stuff love your vids!🤟🏻
No timestamps in the comments? Damn.
