ALICE IN CHAINS - 15 RIFFS

- Hi, guys ! This is my rendition of 15 riffs from various albums of Alice In Chains. I must admit that the tone quest has not always been easy. But in the end, I humbly think that I did justice to these great tunes. Jerry Cantrell is one of my absolute favourite guitar players and songwriters. Layne Staley and Mike Starr are still deeply missed.
All music is property of Alice In Chains, and their respective label(s). I do not own these songs. No copyright infringement is intended.
Have fun ! - Hudba
I get so caught up in the brutally dark lyrical and emotional content of most of their songs that i sometimes forget about the nasty riffs
;) Their lyrics mean a lot to me too.
Because it's genuine.
Yeah dude, AIC is the total package
I completely relate to that, even if it’s hard to ignore the riffs being a guitar player. But songs like Sunshine and Rain When I Die have this power over me
Best grunge band for me. Period.
I like the other bands of the grunge movement very much, but AIC is also my favourite!
@@remidumoulinguitarmusic166 A lot of variation with the Seattle bands. Hard to compare.
No question
Jerry is unquestionably the master of the most original heavy riffs. There is none better
One of the greatest riff masters in heavy music, undoubtedly. And he's still very inspired.
Tony Iommi takes the cake there im afraid
@@stuart5983Jerry is better than Tony I’m afraid
I’m a lead player in an Alice In Chains tribute and I’ve got to say Jerry is one hell of a player. He’s playing styles is bridge between 80’s glam rock with lots of hammer ins and offs, to more modern rock. The way he writes his riffs is amazing. Look at we die young. He doesn’t just stick to that opening riffs, he adds to it makes it even better.
I fully agree, man!
dirt is such a catchy riff
Damn right!
one of the best riffs ever!
Dirt is Electric Funeral's drug-addicted cousin. In a good way!
Yeah it's an awesome riff. The lyrics hit seriously hard as well.
Jerry is criminally underrated! I guess it’s pretty easy to get overshadowed when Layne Staley is in your band. I piss a lot of people off when I tell them AIC was leaps and bounds better than Nirvana, and I still stand by that statement til this day
neither band is comparable
Cantrell is a certified riff master. Definitely not over shadowed by anyone bro.
The pair formed by Layne and Jerry was more than the sum of its parts, they helped each other reach the magic we witnessed and loved (and are still loving) in the common exercise of their art. I think Jerry has got the recognition he deserves for his songwriting, guitar playing and singing abilities. For the music lover I am, I enjoy and cherish the diversity and singularities bands like Nirvana and AIC have brought rather than making them compete.
Completely agreed with you, Cantrell is a riff God, great singer and amazing composer, but was overshadowed by Layne’s great vocals, just like all Seattle bands were overshadowed by Nirvana’s success…
Amazing covers, my fav is Bleed the freak. AiC is the best👌
Thanks a lot.
Favorite of the grunge era for sure. The lyrics were so dark and emotional and the riffs were so heavy and sludgy!
Very good statement. I like the other grunge bands very much, but AIC is the number 1 for me too!
I know something is one of their best and no one ever includes it!
I'm so happy you noticed it. This riff is glorious, playing it is indeed quite uncommon.
Jerry Cantrell genius
I fully agree!
Good video idea on this one. Love me some Jerry Cantrell. Great playing!
Thank you so much for your comment, man. I really appreciate. Jerry is a true riff lord.
Love it! AiC is my favorite band so I love seeing others covering them. You nailed Jerry's tone! Great work!
Such a kind comment, thank you very much. I gave all I could to approach Jerry's glorious tone and do justice to the greatness of AIC.
It ain’t like that is a personal favorite of mine. Riff is just constantly in a groove of its own
Great riff without a doubt. Basically every riff from AIC would deserve to be covered.
Bravo! You NAILED it!!
Thank you so much for your nice comment. Love AIC. You can also check my full covers on the guitar of Dam That River and Nutshell 🤘🎶
Cette sélection a bien mérité l’abonemment. Je suis un grand fan d'AiC, bravo pour la vidéo
Merci beaucoup! Thank you so much for subscribing and commenting so kindly. Love AIC too. You can check my cover of Dam That River. I have just subscribed to your channel as well. Keep rockin' 🤘
Bravo encore une fois Rémi ! Toujours aussi carré et précis. Le son est aussi proche que je puisse l'entendre des originaux. Keep on the good job !
Merci à toi 😊
Amazing stuff 👏 I’d love to listen to the full versions of each one
Thanks a lot. Maybe one day for some of them.
Les Paul sounds great. Rain when i die is my favorite lick to play
Thanks! Great lick indeed, as lots of riffs composed by the great Jerry Cantrell :)
Dam that River is such a mean riff
Oh yeah🤘🏻
Excellent like always. You are a pro Rémi 👏👍🤟🎸
Thank you so much, Flip 😊🤘
Awesome!
Thank you very much :)
One of Jerry's best ever riffs is a B-side to the self titled album called 'Died'....the last song Layne recorded with AIC
Killer riff, indeed. Jerry has written so many glorious riffs/songs in his career. I didn't know "Died" was the last song Layne recorded with AIC. He's deeply missed. Thanks for passing by!
Great stuff man!
Thanks. Glad you liked it!
Sick playing man 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Thank you so much 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Best band since the 70s by miles
I truly admire them much!
Just my humble opinion but Alice in chains, no1 MOST underatted group of 90s!! I am speaking in respect that all members are very accomplished musicians!!! Loved Cantrels guitars, but this 1st time ONLY guitars , sounds so haunting, yet effortless & graceful to point becomes beautiful, 🥰😢😁 I miss you big time Lane R.I.P.
As you mentioned, all of the AIC members are/were great, inspired musicians, and the combo formed by Layne and Jerry was a true blessing and gift. Thanks for passing by!
Fantastic job \o/
Thanks, man
Great job Rémi!
Thank you so much!
Great job man AIC rocks \m/
Thank you very much for the nice words. AIC rules!
I feel like Cantrell's heavy riffs are hugely influenced by Iommi. I think I read in an interview about the Sabbath influence. Yet his riffs have its own individual characteristics. One of my fav guitarists for sure.
Tony Iommi is the original riff lord of heavy music, he has undoubtedly influenced many rock and metal guitar players. Jerry is one of them, with his unique touch. Great riff architect and composer, without forgetting his remarkable vocal abilities.
Dam that River riff is 🔥
Thanks a lot, man, I cannot agree more regarding this killer riff. You can check my full cover of Dam That River, posted on this channel about a year ago. Take care!
Heaven Beside You has also a great riff.
Definitely!
Dam that river 🔥🔥🔥🤘🏾🤘🏾🤘🏾
Killer riff with bone-crushing tone.
Died has a super dirt nasty riff, really overlooked song
For sure
Great tune for sure!
AiC and Soundgarden will always be the superior grunge bands for me. Love the riffs, the vibes, the voices, and none of the pretentiousness of PJ or sloppiness of Nirvana.
I love AIC and Soundgarden too, they are so unique. That's why I decided to cover some of their riffs in the first videos of my CZcams channel 🤘
Great video
Thank you very much
Can you Make Soundgarden riffs?
Could be great. On my to-do list ;)
@@remidumoulinguitarmusic166 please do!
Hi folks, @rafalm947, @Melvinator : your wish will be granted as I am currently working on the recording of 12 Soundgarden riffs :) The video should be ready by the end of the week. Stay tuned!
@@remidumoulinguitarmusic166 Cant wait! you earned a new subscriber:)
You rock man. ❤❤
Thank you so much, man!
Bleed the freak is so great. Also love hate love. Dark songs.
I couldn't agree more!
Nice video man ! I do think the strumming pattern for Nutshell is quite different from what you’re playing
Thanks, man. Indeed regarding Nutshell, I'll be more careful next time ;)
Love, Hate, Love II reminds me the Nirvana song, Papercuts
I hadn't listened to Bleach for a long time. Papercuts is a great, dark tune, with rythm patterns and some melodic passages that are indeed reminiscent of the second riff of Love, Hate, Love.
me too
Nice video!
Thanks a lot!
FKN AMAZING MATE!!
Thanks a lot, mate!
Love it!! What kind of les Paul is that
Thank you very much! It's a Les Paul Standard Ebony from 1996, which was bought new in 1997. With a 50's neck, I guess. A few years ago, I swapped the stock pickups (Gibson 490R & 498T) for the Seymour Duncan Slash signature set and upgraded the capacitors. Great sounding guitar, I love it 👌🎶
Would? Is just too good
Fully agree. This song is so darkly compelling🤘
One of my favorites have to be Rain When I Die
Rain When I Die has killer riffs and melodies. Believe me, it wasn't easy to make a choice for this video 😉🤘🎶
The 90's had a lot of talented bands that came out but to club them all as grunge is something I find strange - I mean for example Nirvana and Pearl Jam are poles apart from AIC and Soundgarden. There's just no similarities as far as I can tell. There's also no doubt that AIC is my fav band from those times and Jerry is ultra dark and an ultra heavy riffmeister!
True that. AIC and Soundgarden are my favourite bands from the grunge movement, and each band you mentioned were not really comparable. They all came from Seattle and became famous around the same period. Jerry wrote so many dark, inspiring riffs. It was very difficult for me to pick "only" 15 riffs for this video. Thanks for passing by!
curious how you got the distorted tones. are you using pedals through an amp or an amp sim? They sound killer
Thanks a lot, I appreciate much :) A mix of both actually. I mostly used the Fortin Nameless Suite from Neural DSP in my DAW (Reaper) for the distorted tones (We Die Young, Man In The Box, Them Bones, Stone, ...). I also double-tracked some riffs with a Mesa Boogie Mark V 25 (Love, Hate, Love2, for instance, with a touch of flanger in this case). For the slightly overdriven parts (Rooster, Would?), I used the clean channel of the Mesa with a fair amount of gain, boosted with an OD pedal with little gain and lots of volume.
Would you ever release your Fortin nameless presets from this?
I actually used the presets made by Steven Ward and which are stored on this folder:
bit.ly/SWPresets
I sometimes made minor tweaks for the recording, but you can definitely use them stock and you'll get in Jerry's tonal territory for sure :) Have fun.
Jerry Cantrell 👌
I love him. I actually played some of the riffs of this video with one of the picks Jerry threw to the audience at the end of a gig of their European tour in 2019 :)
@@remidumoulinguitarmusic166 that's really cool dude, AIC is my favorite band of all time
Great video, just miss down in a hole on that
Thank you very much! I can assure you it wasn't easy to choose the riffs to be covered, as Jerry wrote so many great ones 😉🎶
I was hoping youd do Aint Like That 😕
Almost every AIC song has a great riff. In the end, a choice must be made ;)
Which pedals are best for AIC songs?
Jerry primarily used Marshall amps modified by Bogner to get his wonderful distorted tones, possibly boosted by a Tube Screamer. Nowadays, he uses a signature Friedman amp which sounds great.
Subsequently, I would suggest you use a Friedman BE-OD Overdrive pedal on the clean channel of an amp to get close to his tone and capture its spirit. Great tool for sure!
Dirty sound for best grunge.🤘
Glad we share this passion for AIC 🤘🎶
👍
спасибо - Thank you !
)
Where’s “Ain’t like that” ?
To choose is to forsake.
@@remidumoulinguitarmusic166 that’s true
It ain't here.
That sounded great!
Thanks a lot!
Sick vid bro but it sounds slightly out of tune imo. Are you half step down?
Thanks, man. If I am not mistaken, Jerry Cantrell never or seldom uses standard tuning (EADGBE). The usuals tunings of AIC are Eb (half step down - in songs like Man In The Box, Bleed The Freak, Would?, ...) and Drop C# (We Die Young, Them Bones, Stone, ...). So, I guess you meant detuned instead of out of tune.
@@remidumoulinguitarmusic166 i think the dude was saying like one of your strings is slightly sharp or flat on accident. i don’t think it is but i think that might be what they mesnt
@@braydenbench1670 maybe. I am always cautious with tuning before recording, and I don't hear anything wrong here either. But of course, being slightly out of tune (especially with a Les Paul) may always happen ;)
Stay Away???
Great song!
Nirvana got all the press,, for some reason? When AIC was all substance and clearly on a level above the rest.
I started the musical journey of my teenage years with Nirvana, which I still like to this day, to be frank with you. Then, I got hooked on bands such as Soundgarden and Alice In Chains (and many other rock/metal bands), which I truly admire. I get your point. So happy AIC is still active, even if Layne and Mike aren't there anymore.
Where was it ain’t like that best AiC riff
Great riff for sure, but which AIC riff wouldn't deserve to be covered?
Waiting for the “underated musician” comment
You can now find it in the comment section.
your playing on Nutshell seems quite stiff and jerky and you seem to be missing some strums or something... the strumming on the original is much more smooth flowing.
Thanks for your constructive criticism.
Lack of rhythm
