We chase misprinted lies
We face the path of time
And yet I fight, and yet I fight this battle all alone
No one to cry to, no place to call home

We miss you, Layne. Fly on!
I am now 33 years old but my dad turned me on to this song about 4 years ago. I was deep in heroin/fetynal addiction. As I was listening to this song he told me how Layne Staley was found by his mother after an OD and I can honestly say there isn't not 1 other song out there that catches me like this. Happy to say Dec 27th I'll be 3 years clean!!
Happy for you man. You are a gift to the world. Stay strong, you're more powerful than you know

As a Marine coming home from Iraq in 2004 and having my family fall apart almost immediately, I listened to this song and the rest of their unplugged set every day alone in my apartment as I rebuilt my life from scratch. This song SAVED MY LIFE. It reminded me of what true beauty could be if I kept fighting and never gave up. Thank you Layne and thank you AIC. Thank you dearly. And to anyone reading this who's fighting demons of any kind, keep fighting the good fight, keep hanging on. It will not always be this way. Don't let this world harden your heart, believe in yourself and above all, live with love and humility ALWAYS. S/F.
Thanks for those words bro. Hope all is well sir.

@@thewarriorsgarden-83 Not mine I'm a suicidal depressed fuck up bro. And being fat and ugly doesn't help either. But life moved on with or without me.
@@thewarriorsgarden-83 Thank you for your service sir. True hero
Thank you very much, however I'm no hero, but I was lucky enough to know and stand beside many. And I've fucked things up way more than I've ever won. It's not how many times we fall, but how many times we've stood back up. I was depressed and suicidal after the war and after loosing my family and gained almost 80 pounds in a year or so. Now I manage a chain of gyms and am in better shape than when I was in the military. The story of your life is not written in your failures, for in failing there are lessons to learn but only if you keep your heart open. It's not easy but it is worth it. Train yourself to look for and find the good in any situation. The thing itself is not bad, only our perception of the thing, once we are able to stand back and look from different perspectives we will realize the power to change the thing, obesity, depression, whatever it may be, exists inside of us. Everything you need to succeed and be happy is already inside you. I know it sounds corny but I swear it's the truth. Infinite potential exists within all of us. This is why it's so important to believe in yourself. Others will quit on you. It's just part of life. But you must never quit on yourself.

They sure were! This is the best Unplugged I've heard. So deep, emotional...and beautiful. Considering the backstory behind it (online as well for those who aren't familiar) they came so close to "was it going to happen?" and they did an unbelievably amazing performance without many rehearsals! "If I can't be my own, I'd feel better dead." It hits DEEP, I don' know but the moment after the line, there's something in me that needed it.

This guy was a living cadaver back then, he came out from nowhere, hiding needle scars and dead eyes, sat down, and sang the crap out of it with such control and sweetness in his voice. This moment was out of this world. Just magical

How Layne just walks out, soul already dead but body still alive, and belts this song out perfectly just shows the talent he had. Layne functioning at 25% if that is far better than most vocalists today at 100%. Truly a hauntingly beautiful performance that goes down in the books as one of the greatest of all time.
Jim Morrison would be proud, oh wait he is now partying like hell, heaven beside them
You’ve got that backwards, his soul is very much alive, it’s his body that’s cooked out but he still had a great voice for someone in that physical condition.

Layne died 19 years ago today; he was dying here and not only did he give one of the best performances of all time, he still gave a better performance than anybody today. RIP Layne you were one of the greatest singers to ever live, we miss you.
This whole show was heartbreaking. You can tell something is not right with Layne, his spirit and power isn't there. It gave some of the songs a more somber feeling, but I thought it was so scary to see and hear this back then.
When I first saw this, I thought Mike's guitar said "Friends don't let friends use". I kinda wish it did say that.
I made this exact comment almost a year ago and some random fan tried telling me me wasn’t dying cuz he lived six more years after this. Injecting heroin is dying and it got him.
This is so heartbreaking. Why are the greatest people burdened with such pain.

I would have to her to "get. out." lmao
You married this woman? Lol jk
Can you imagine being there that night? No phones and crap. Witnessing such a pure, raw, emotional and iconic moment in (grunge)music history. All silent and in awe. Just goosebumps...
This will go in history as one the greatest performances on record. Ever.

If I can't be my own, I'd fell better dead. Those words resonated in 1993, still do in 2024.
Best of luck to whom all that ever feel alone, stuck and forever drifting in an endless scream for understanding and help.
"if I can't be my own, id feel better dead" might be the most powerful line in lyrical history.
Verdade universal!
Easy now.
"And yet I fight, and yet I fight this battle all alone. No one to cry to, no place to call home". Shit hits home for me

Seeing Layne walk out and immediately sing “and yet I fight this battle alone...” is heart breaking.
We chase misprinted lines was the first thing he said but yea I feel you . On that bro .
Everytime I play this I start crying.

I cannot watch this without crying
I’m the 8m part of the 58m views.
Granted I was only 14 when they did this but I was really surprised that they choose Alice in Chains to do an acoustic set but they just killed it. All of those songs sounded incredible and hearing the emotion in Layne's voice was beautiful.
Yet another late night listening to this in the dark with tears in my eyes. Please lord help me make it for my little girl.
You can do it bro
Don’t give up.
My dad told me he this song has always been his go to during his darkest moments and now he’s able to share it with me. As a woman who’s so grateful for my father, make it through for her. You can do this.
Reading that was like a stab in the heart. I hope you make it through, brother!
you’ll make it through this. i’m 15 and am watching my dad through a rough time, my biggest fear is losing him. she needs you, i can’t stress this enough, please stay for her.
The moment when Layne walks in and just starts singing is one of my favourite moments in all of music
It's very bittersweet
Mine too man
crepez Definitely! He was amazing
Dear Minus Cube. You say it so absolut beautiful . All the best from Denmark
😭😭
Everry time I hear this song, I cry a little ......"No one to cry to, no place to call home". It breaks my heart that Layne's dad betrayed him :(
4 months clean!!
Congrats! I hope the best for you moving forward. 💪🏽👏🏽
Hell yeah keep it up
he died alone, faminshed and 80 lbs. this song was his most honest. a cry for help. fight addiction any way you can. this was a journal entry. don't let it be yours.
Go watch Man in a Box knowing what happened in the end.
No, really 😢
This song makes me miss a place that doesn’t exist
walkeronair ... ☮️ on 🌍
Anemoia is the word for this
💯 facts
It might not exist anymore, but it did. I grew up in Seattle in the 80s and 90s, and Layne's voice in Nutshell and River of Deceit especially captures the feel of Seattle of those times. There was a sense of quiet melancholy in the area before tech came in and changed it dramatically. There will never be a way to go back to those times, but at least they still survive in the memories of those of us that were there, and through the voice of Layne Staley.
It does exist every time I re watch these videos, over and over ...
There will never be a time as culturally as significant as the 1990’s in the U.S.A. This song, this album, this band examplifies that. It was a perfect storm of music, culture and fashion. There will never be another time of this significance in this country. Ever
I yearn for that era so badly. When times were simpler, too. I'm 42 now but sometimes feel it was yesterday, that I could go back and it's right there.😞
The best MTV unplugged ever made
This is easily one of the top 5 best performances of all time.
I agree. The people who were in attendance that night are some of the luckiest people on Earth.
Agreed brother, the talent and emotion is amazing
“ Down in a hole” #1 in my books, or did you mean the entire show…
Because yes
@@greglloyd147 “Down in a hole” unplugged is my all-time favorite song. That entire show is gold.
Agreed. I heard this song for the first time camping. A car played the cd in a canyon in the mountains and it echoed and filled the air and night sky. Amazing band.
They performed this on April 10th, 1996. 27 years later, I have no words when I watch and listen to his amazing voice. You are not human if this doesn't give you chills or bring a tear to your eyes. Rest in Peace Layne.
I cry... I can't help it.
Да, только он в аду, куда и мы скоро отправимся
I was 4 year's old when this come out
I remember when this came out, I was 19 years old and got chills but now, it hits me even deeper 💜 wish I could go back to this moment, wish he was here.
Your idea of a beautiful, human and amazing musical artist is just that. It's "Yours." Although, it's narcissistic to judge a world of humans based solely on your love, your need and your opinions. Yes, he was talented. A talented individual who had everything a young wanna-be artist dreams of, accept the will and strength to "Live." He is the last individual I would want my children to aspire to be. I'm not taking away anything from this young man, or disrespecting his life, or achievements in any way. He did all the damage upon himself by taking his own life and giving up.
Rest in peace, brother.
I discovered Nutshell at the peak of my depression. Nothing felt right. I had no motivation, no idea what I was doing with my life and no real emotional support from a neglectful family that I did not understand was neglectful at the time. This song reached deep down into the pit of my soul. I will always remember that day when I was unable to leave my bed and just cried endlessly to this song. It was both the darkest day of my life and the catalyst for finally fighting back. "If I can't be my own, I'd feel better dead" lit a fire in me. I desperately wanted to find the value in my life. Life is still so tough til this day, but a decade after I found this song, I am so much stronger and grateful for what I have rather than fixated on what I don't. Layne helped me save my life. I am "my own" now more than ever.
Rest in peace, Layne Staley. 21 years ago today. I have been clean from heroin for six years as of this past February. (2-9-17) I've lost so many friends and family members to overdose, including both of my parents 😔. Opiate addiction is a beast, but it's not impossible to get clean.
GREAT job at being clean from heroin. I'm sure life is much better for you. Stay strong like you have been
Good on you. Hang in there. Live is lived not endured.

Por seguro !!!
Layne Staley walks in, nonchalantly, almost disinterested and then sings with all of his heart, not his vocal cords. What a way to go out, rest in unchained peace, Layne, Kurt, Chris.
