- Here's a list of my top 15 Alice In Chains riffs from one of the great riff-makers and songwriters, Jerry Cantrell. For this list I concentrated on the earlier Layne Staley period of the group which tragically ended too soon.

Respect for including Gun in your list. I feel like most soundgarden fans dont even know this song and its easily one of their best, such a killer song.
Black hole Sun?
Yea what about spoonman? or burden in my hand
Room a thousand years wide is so underrated
maybe i should start listening to alice in chains
You would be doing your self a favor🤘
you should.
Do it, you will not regret
You should mate!! They’re brilliant!!
Please do, Jerry Cantrell is a genius.
I find the lack of jar of flies riffs disturbing
C’mon man, Don’t follow might not be heavy but it’s pretty af
@@joaovitorpaulino7439 Rotten Apple, No Excuses, the whole album is great
@@gabrielramos5338 Whale and Wasp too!
He already did a video of their unplugged which features some of Jar of Flies

@@joaovitorpaulino7439 Fun fact: Jar of Flies is the highest selling E.P. of ALL TIME!
Alice in Chains, arguably, has the most interesting and provocative riffs of the Grunge era bands.
How a riff could be provocative?
@@erodey3133 provocative as in start an emotion.
Most riffs u just listen to and sound good.
But Jerry’s riffs give us emotions. Normally it’s just the singing and lyrics for most bands but there is an emotional response from the listener.
Just like singing…
It changes ur moods and affects u.
That main riff from 'Died' could destroy the walls of Jericho. Cantrell is a freaking genious, his guitar parts are so simple, yet so powerful and memorable.

Where is love hate love? The starting riff is gold!
Whole damn song is gold
One of my many fav from AiC 👌
Alice in chains forever
Chuck Schuldiner forever
FOREVER
Of all of the Seattle “grunge” bands of the early 90s, I really believe that AIC most represented the meaning of the word in their sound.
Couldn't agree more. Well said.
The ranking
1.alice in chains
2.soundgarden
3.Nirvana
4.pearl jam
For the big 4 obviously
1. Smells like teen spirit is a rip off “Godzilla - The smashing pumpkins” 1990 BOC cover (czcams.com/video/ozs-KJS-7QQ/video.html ). Therefore, the members of nirvana didn’t like their hit and did not want to play it, because they stole it completely from the Pumpkins, like all other songs lol.
2. Come as you are is a rip off of “22 faces - Garden of Delight 1984” (czcams.com/video/bdazIpDDrO8/video.html).
3. Polly is a rip off of The 4 skins on the streets 1983 (czcams.com/video/Yp82IxMmbEg/video.html)
4. Heart shaped box is a rip off of (czcams.com/video/bcRY_aMXzWk/video.html). 1983 Butthole surfers Bar b q. They even copied the vocal part «HEY WAIT”
5. About a girl is a rip off of czcams.com/video/80-ekOM9XXk/video.html It’s a croatian band. Krist Novoselic is from Croatia 1979
6. Been a son is a rip off of czcams.com/video/w-dkkxhD6V0/video.html 1983 Zebra don’t walk away
7. Aneurysm is a rip off of czcams.com/video/6SC1bwWcido/video.html Fang an invitation 1989
8. Breed - wipes potential suicide czcams.com/video/V6SFFpTpC74/video.html 1980
9. Mr moustache riff is a rip off of czcams.com/video/j3akJkD-6E4/video.html on 0:55 min 1966
10. Spank thru is a rip off of El clavo, TV show
1. Milk it - melvins it’s shoved 1991
11. Rape me - mudhoney need. czcams.com/video/PIMyf8PSIUQ/video.html 1988
This video shows that Jerry Cantrell was a genius, and had great creativity in creating riffs and solos. Alice in Chains forever!
R.I.P Layne Staley
R.I.P Mike Starr
Cantrell imo the most underrated musician of all time
@@hitsome1hard in with ya on this one bro.
Jerry Cantrell IS a genius. He continues to make amazing AIC music to this day
We Die Young sounds fucking brutal
Their heaviest song
@@rhudaur3609 probably so close is their heaviest song
@@rhudaur3609 Dam That River’s heavier.
And Them Bones
@@rhudaur3609 it ain't like that too
Its about time. Alice in Chains were and still are one of the most underrated and overlooked bands of the 90s. I like Nirvana and all but something about Alice in Chains is much more appealing, perhaps the depressing lyrics or much more interesting and varied riffs. Either way, great video
I dont understand why so many people compare nirvana to aic
@@Condemned782 same reason they also compare them to soundgarden and Pearl Jam. They’re all bands from the same location at the same time
I was thinking exactly the opposite. I never really understood the appeal of AIC and found a lot of the other bands of that period so much more musically creative.
@@andoorss different styles though. they were just grouped as 'grunge'. but its like what is grunge?
@@kalvino67 it's mainly the Staley/Cantrell vocal style, which was unique and sounded perfect
A cool trick Dave Jerden, the producer for most of AIC albums, did was he'd mic both the front and back of the guitar cabinet with an SM57s or MD420s to make it sound thicker.
Needed to thicken up as mostly one guitarist, apart from Layne on a couple like Angry Chair. Mad Season Layne nails the guitar. Great trick though, I might it. Must have had an open back cab involved? Great name by the way. If I ever have a kid boy or girl thats their fuckin' name.
I know everyone loves the classics, but Duvall era AIC has some sick riffs too. Drone, Stone, Acid Bubble, Phantom Limb, and so on
Indeed, "Black gives way to blue" is really brilliant, I just love it. The other two I don't like as much, but there's some really good stuff in there as well.
Well yeah- it’s still Jerry Cantrell writing the riffs- he wrote most of the lyrics from the Layne days as well
Agreed, songs like Acid Bubble, Private Hell and Never Fade are new age Alice In Chains classics already.
And check my brain!!
hollow and drone are sick riffs too
Sunshine, the most underrated AIC track as well as one of my favorites!
The self titled is amazing. So dark and muddy.
Even a dark lord of the sith can’t not like grunge
The perfect "fuck you" to Sony + Layne spitting on the face of the press.
Their best album 🤘
I wonder what Alice ever did to deserve ending up in chains :(
"Joined the Dark Side, she did."
"Oh hi Mark"
Who's Alice and why are they in chains
hmmm
Heroin
@@jericb If I’m not mistaken, Layne came up with the idea and the name refers to BDSM and Alice in Wonderland
Them bones rift is so good man, you can hear Staley going AAAH AAAAH AAAAH
I thought I was over my aic phase; guess I'll never be
I can see what the cost will be I don’t need you but I just can’t put you down
It's not a phase bro...its just life lol
Mine started when I was about 8 and hasn’t ended over 20 years later.
The Layne era really ended with their greatest riff...
Died has a simple but really good and strong riff!
Died and Get Born Again both have killer riffs!
Stone is the 3rd best riff Jerry ever wrote.
black gives way to blue is an amazing song. Don't live in the past bud! Layne isn't here anymore and will never be. Duval is an amazing singer who is NOT TRYING to be Layne, but himself. That's why Cantrell personally chose him
Acid bubble tho
i'd put rotten apple somewhere in there
Died is up there with Into the Void for one of the best riffs ever.
Great comment. Completely agree.
Died is so badass
i think the riff in "i know somethin'" is slept on
So is the Chorus riff from Confusion. It’s a top 5 all time. It’s unbelievably good.
Put you down! Confusion! ..... In all truth, no matter the list..... something's getting left out that shouldn't be! The list should be..... well, EVERY DAMN SONG THEY EVER DID!🤨👍
@@distantgalaxymusic1447 Amen, brother!
Finally, someone placed Died at number 1 of AiC riffs
Amazing song but so hard to listen to.
I kinda prefer Get born again over Died for some reason
Yeaaaaah, the best riff for me!!
My favorite alice song
Do Soundgarden or Stone Temple Pilots?
agree
Up
Definitely one on stp and queens of the stone age
@@Hevvvyyy qotsa are so good
Oh yeah man, both please. Great playing.
Frogs riff is pure darkness
"Rain When I Die" is my #1 favorite riff, and #2 is "What the Hell Have I?"
No what the hell have i is insanity, one of the coolest and most addicting riffs ever
I just listen to AIC the whole day.. And then this video pop's up.. What a great day👍
Man i love your Videos pls just never stop.
Thank you.
This is awesome! I’m 60yo and love Alice In Chains and even all the new music that Jerry and crew are making. Great and enduring Band...
For those who haven't seen it yet, here's the video I did of the Unplugged riffs including Nutshell, Rooster, No Excuses etc czcams.com/video/OQmdSr1-mhU/video.html
Hi Bloxsy do you like Flaming Lips to make a series of riffs? Many Thanks :)
I like a few of their songs, I'm always open to suggestions.
could you do some smiths or the cure riffs?
Sunshine...such an underrated track. Thanks for putting that on!
Omg!!!! Yes finally alice in chains 😄🤘
Love this band!! Great job and nice tones :)
There are some really, really great riffs in the DuVall era- Check My Brain, Hollow, Stone... and it may be controversial, but I think Phantom Limb might be Jerry's greatest ever riff
DuVall actually wrote the phantom limb rift!
Acid bubble as well
Finally, i was waiting this video, amazing
I think I would’ve had the Down In A Hole and Rooster riffs somewhere in there. But great vid!
Alice in Chains, the grunge band your 40-50 year old mom likes a little bit better than Nirvana
I wish my mom was that cool. Alas it's just me.
My mom doesn't even know what an electric guitar is or what rock means
@@lenzschwarze what music does she listen to then?
@@caprisungamer213 she doesn't listen to any kind of music but enjoys italian contemporary pop (not the international pop, but more of a romantic and classical genre of songs)
Fuck yeah...the first time I heard Died I was pretty much addicted to that song. All because of that kick ass riff.
My fav riff is man in the box It’s just like whenever u hear it u can’t help but headbang would is Amazing too. angry chair also 🔥
Amazing as always with incredible tone Bloxy.
I forgot how awesome a lot of these riffs were. Simple, but clever, and outside the box. Great stuff, great job on covering these.
I’m glad it ain’t like that is high up there. Its so underrated. One of the grooviest riffs of all time, also we die young has an incredible riff no one can deny!!!
Always look forward to your videos. Very under rated. Absolutely love the production and the guitars you have. Amazing gibson SG and amazing work man. 🤘
Dude, that made me so happy. Needed that today.
Dude I’m so glad you made this vid. I loved the ones on nirvana and bleach and couldn’t wait to see one on aic. I started listening to them in jan 2020 when man in the box came up in my recommended, and it literally changed my life. Best music I’ve ever heard. Melodically superior! Great video 👍
Dude...great job!🤘
Awesome man! "Died" has one of my favorite riffs! Greetings from Brazil!
man im starting to lose count of great bands that i found by this channel. appreciate the work!
Nailed every riff 🤘👌 well done! One of/if not my best bands, enjoyed that good work
Would love to see Soundgarden and Pearl Jam!

I cannot be more agree with you and the beautiful selection of riffs ♥♥

Very good job , very clean work
Thank you
Man...... that's awesome! AIC fan here over 20 years! Great job!
Thank you very much.
Well done ! AIC riffs are so beautiful and dark
Very nice man!!
👽
I've always loved Jerry's distinct way of writing riffs/songs.
He definitely has a predisposition toward eerie chromatic half-step stuff....but with an undercurrent that is very blues-based.
That's definitely his niche....
Was great man...helpful too
Been listening to them for years and it never ceases to amaze me how I can continue to fall in love with their music like it's the first time.
Nice guitar tone man, congrats. Did you use a plugin (which one?) Or microphone an amplifier?
Up
You capture Jerry's Spirit! Well done!
Beautiful!
Great vid, amazing, immaculate presentation of timeless music! Btw, 2018's Rainier Fog was an amazing album, AIC still going very strong!
Alucinante Amigo! Felicitaciones!
Somewhat casual fan here, thank you for showing me over now, never heard that one, that's a super cool riff.
Rain when i die my fav riff
Nice number 1 choice. Great to see the love for _Tripod_ and great to see Layne's one and only riff making it in.

One of my fav bands, since i was 15 years old. Someday i"ll watch them in a concert
Great tone 👍 🤘
Thanks for reminding me why: a. I love AIC so much and b. why I try and play the guitar for the last 10 years! Good stuff!
Always great your videos! Loved it and thanks for making it. What gears did you use to get the tone? It’s perfect
That's a mighty fine guitar you got there sir.
Died is one of the most underrated AIC songs. Glad you had it where you did.
What the hell have I is underrated as well that's one of my favorite Alice in Chains songs
A Dead Kennedys riffs video would be cool
It’s a shame put you down didn’t make the cut. Always been one of my personal favorites.
