  • Yu Darvish is a man of many pitches, and I mean many - he throws nearly every different pitch type you possible could. In today’s video, we are going to dive into specifically the differences between 4 seam and 2 seam fastballs by taking a look at Darvish’s arsenal.

Just what I was looking for, thanks! I may have overlooked them, but do you plan to showcase breaking balls next? Appreciate the knowledge and content

Absolutely! I’ve done videos on breaking balls in the past, but not with in-depth pro examples. Be on the lookout for something like that soon.
      Thanks for the comment, Mike!

I finally understood the difference between the two pitches. Thank you so much for making this video!! :)

Awesome video, Jake! Thanks for all of the great insight you give.
I noticed that on some players' Baseball Savant pages, it will list that they throw a sinker. But, sometimes, when I scrape the raw data, it will list those same pitches as two-seamers. And, in the video, you mentioned how two-seamers sink relative to a four-seamer. Are two-seamers and sinkers essentially interchangeable? If not, what makes them distinct? Thanks again!

Great question, Devin. Typically sinkers are thrown with a two-seam grip - however they do not have to be.
Like I described in the video, having low spin on that pitch is going to cause it to sink more. But the ‘definition’ (for lack of a better term) of a sinker is purely a pitch that has a spin axis closer to 3 o’clock.
Technically someone can throw a two-seam with a 12 o’clock axis due to their arm slot, the two seam vs. four seam orientation purely relates to how the pitcher grips the pitch while sinker describes the way the pitch moves.
Like I said, most of the time sinkers are thrown with a 2 seam grip. So yes, people in the business use these terms interchangeably frequently.
      Hope this answered your question!

@@SimpleSabermetrics have you heard of laminar effect

Have you made a video on straightening up a fastball? I have a guy who slightly cuts his fastball (70-76% eff) and we’ve tried everything I can think of to chase a higher efficiency. Today we’re going to try that rip through the seams

Great question, Corey. I’ve used a few things to help guys visualize the way their FB spins. First thing I’d try is using something like the CleanFuego ball. (www.cleanfuego.com)
Introducing this gives immediate feedback and helps guys feel true backspin. I’d start using it in catch play for the first 10 throws at least every day and see if that has an impact on your SE numbers in the pen.

Idk if you have heard about brad Keller’s one seam sinker but if you haven’t you should check it out and make a video about it. Very interesting physics behind it

That’d definitely be a good topic for a video. Thanks for the comment, Darren!

0:14 It's funny you wrote Screwball as a pitch yet to be seen. He had one in Japan apparently. Quit throwing it in favor of a splitter.

Are you aware of what laminar force is?

    • @SimpleSabermetrics
      @SimpleSabermetrics  Před 3 lety +1

Yes, I’ve been hesitant to make a video on it because it is quite complex. Perhaps I’ll have to bring on the expert himself, Barton Smith, as a guest to help explain!

  • @TexasRangersReportbyCFM

What’s the purpose of him having all of these pitches? It seems like most of them do the same thing.
