It was Andy Farrell who saw JGP's potential and picked him for Ireland despite him being, as you said, back up to Luke McGrath at Leinster. He flourished playing for Ireland.

    • @Dreyno
      @Dreyno Před měsícem +2

He was better than McGrath the day he arrived. So much hype and development went into McGrath that they really wanted him to come good (and he did. He is very good.). But JGP made Leinster play better every time he replaced him or started.

I agree Tim. Just home from the Leinster game and yes great to win but boy I just don't feel we are at our best by any means. Even IF we beat la Rochelle, who btw are also are not at their best either , I fear Bordeaux even more if we progress. They are on fire IMO. Hope we can progress our game from here on...I think Leinster maybe are still adjusting to Nienaber etc.

Hello, I think Leinster has the players and tactics to beat Bordeaux and even Toulouse; against La Rochelle, that might want to prioritize the Champion's cup over the Top 14, it could be more difficult, but that time Leinster should have prepared the antidote.

Harry should start over Ross next week, he just offers more in attack and Ross hasn't played that well since coming back from injury. I would also start Will Connors and bring Van Der Flier off the bench. Connors played brilliantly against La Rochelle last time out and he's the perfect antidote to the big La Rochelle players

Excellent points about JGP. He and Sexton were a great team for Ireland & Leinster. AS you say, Sexton is gone but, the subsequent performances of Gibson Parke have gone a long way towards softening the impact of that blow. Nightmare scenario is what happens if JGP gets injured? Leinster are unsettled at out-half as it is. Luke McGrath, the back-up, is prone to losing the plot at crucial times. IMO Leinster are vulnerable; they have the advantage of zero travel compared to La Rochelle's voyage to South Africa. I expect that JGP will be Target #1 next Saturday.

I think Leinster beating La Rochelle in the pool stages will help them because now they have the belief that they can do it. But they really need to improve the scrum this week. Also for quite some time I thought that Gibson Park was the better scrum-half possibly two years before Luke McGrath got moved to the bench. Personally for next week I would bring in Will Connors to chop some timber.

Leicester made a decision to rest at least 3 international players to prioritise domestic competition. You gotta talk about that Tim it was a really poor look from the top of the organisation.
Leinster have taken a 6 nations winning team and brought them all back in early for Bulls and Leicester game in the hopes of having them be a lot better for LAR next week. Let’s see what way it goes but to pretend that Leinster were ever going to be close to their best is a nonsense. They had a decent half against the Bulls but poor set piece and the staccato nature of the game stopped Leinster finding a flow.
Ref was very fussy and poor imo. Ruined the flow of the game for both sides tbh.
Jamie Osborne looked pretty good at this level which is exciting. Hugo Keenan wasn’t fully right all game so I hope he is alright after the game and is better for getting the minutes under the belt.
I could see Leinster going 6/2 next week with Ross Byrne dropping out entirely and Connors and Jenkins coming into the starting team and JVDF, Molony and Conan coming off the bench at 50. Be important to have McGrath back at sub scrum half as well.

No dog in the fight, but eff me Leinster (ireland) can barely touch the ball without cheating.
The forward part has become, over the last three years, an active part of their training and game plan.
The first 19 minutes was all about testing the ref, to see why they could get away with.
If you actually (and you need to actually know the rules and apply no bias) watch only Leinster for 15 minutes in any game and purely concentrate on what they’re doing, you’ll end up throwing something at the tv in anger. Their cheating is constant.
Porter is a pathological cheat, he spends 100% of his time on the pitch doing everything to cheat. I’m amazed Cole, who I have little time for, didn’t beat the living crap out of Porter when he kept standing up. At one point Cole’s spine nearly got snapped when Porter stood up. Disgraceful. Porter gets warned by the international refs before each match, but at this lowered level he gets away with everything.
And then GPs Jedi mind trick on the ref at a Rick was unreal. The tackler was still on the floor, GP: “he’s off his feet", ref blows and repeats "he's off his feet". it was like watching a young version of Rory Kockott.
Tim about Porter: "i love the man!"
leinster/ireland massive cheats.l, but at least ireland have never lost a world
    Cup final.

You obviously have let your own bias get in the way of your brain. Dan Cole was closing the gap and his head was on Porters shoulder before engagement (which is why he was stood up - once). This has been illegal for a few years and Brousset did not seem confident refereeing the scrum at all. The breakdown was a complete mess but that was because Brousset was so inconsistent. In the first half everything was off feet as far as he was concerned, but he was concentrating so hard on that, the gate became nonexistent. In the 2nd half, Leicester were clearing out from East/West. The try for James Cronin came after the maul had collapsed (by Leicester) and therefore he should have been on his feet when he gathered the ball before grounding. Finally, Robbie Henshaw should have given up a penalty at least for his clearly deliberate knock on with 3 minutes to go, but James Lowe's knock on was in the tackle (his eyes are always on the player and not the ball). It was not a penalty, never mind a yellow card. Brousset would have realised his error when he reviewed the case for a penalty try, but it was too late because he prematurely issued the yellow.

@@paulennis2996 which bias? I’m not a Leicester supporter. You look like you’re Irish, so clearly unbiased thinking on rugby wouldn’t be in your list of available skills. Go to,Old Carton any day of the week and you’ll see ireland practicing cheating, it’s part of their established game play.
But, never criticise any team that’s never lost a World Cup final.

Wow, that's an incredible amount of cynicism and bitterness. At the end of the day it will effect you not others. If only your team were perfect we could agree with you. Better off letting it go, save yourself time writing it and others time reading it if they would be bothered.

@@johnmc3862 that’s a very emotional response John, you’re heavily left hemisphere dominated, but culturally it’s probably unavoidable for you. I understand.
But at least ireland have never lost a World Cup final.
