The Cult Is Alive is the eleventh album by the Norwegian black metal band, Darkthrone. Released in 2006, this album represents a great shift in the band's style, as they incorporate more punk and crust punk traits than before. While the band's black metal roots are still evident, their shift from the genre's typical sound is much more noticeable. Commenting on the style of the album, drummer Fenriz has stated "Call it black metal or evil rock, I don't care..."

That is right! I played this song for him in the car the other day and he had to stop. Went out, had a coffee with a big smile and jumped into to car! He is 66. So is my mother. They have given me Pink Floyd, Iggy, Velvets, Led Zep, Sabbath, The Beatles, The Doors, Nina Hagen, Kinks, The Who, Stones etc. etc. And now they are big black metal fans!
Well, my father prefers Isengard and my mother loves Storm, but I'm blessed with a beautiful fucked up family!

I cant be the only one that thinks the riff sounds like punk. Well, think that black metal comes from Thrash Metal, and Thrash had a lot of inspiration from Motörhead, and Motörhead has a bit of punk in the riffs
Most old school black metal bands were into d-beat/crust stuff, it's a direct influence on black metal as a whole. check out discharge to see what I mean
darkthrone has taken a lot more crust punk inspiration over the recent years, so it sounds a lot more “punky” than other BM bands
Darkthrone's later stuff is not really black metal, its more blackened crust
On wikipedia, hardcore punk spawned the extreme metal genres (black metal, death metal, speed metal, thrash metal).

man, i SUCK at making my point, what i meant to say is that i like the Heavy Metal influence of the "new" Dark Throne albums, it has a large traditional metal influence, but some obvious elements of black metal are still present.
Cold and dead ... the way it should be ... Thank you to Darkthrone & Peaceville for continuing a legacy of death brought to the surface.
