The Norwegian black metal legends, show that within five tracks and 45 minutes on their 19th album, Eternal Hails, they remain defiantly and eternally Darkthrone.
Since forming in 1986 as Black Death in Kolboton, Norway, Darkthrone have been masters of their art. Dropping the death metal of 1991’s Soulside Journey debut album in favour of a more primitive, black metal sound on the following year’s A Blaze In The Northern Sky, they helped define black metal in the ‘90s through albums like 1993’s Under A Funeral Moon and its follow-up Transilvanian Hunger. Truly, though, Darkthrone remain unique, even in their own canon.
On Eternal Hails, the longer, doomier songs reflect drummer Fenriz’s love of doom, taking their time to make their point. For Fenriz, what he and co-conspirator Nocturno Culto have concocted stretches back even further than discovering black metal, to the sounds of the ‘70s and the more freewheeling sounds of bands playing with more expansive themes. This didn’t just make the songs longer, it made them an entirely different beast from the ground up.
This 9min 17 seconds, Fenriz penned, hallowed epic “Hate Cloak” is steeped in the majestic thunder of vintage heavy doom metal. Fenriz comments “Hate Cloak is certainly the slowest song on the album, there are plenty of “fast" parts on Ted's songs, middle tempos and slow as well. The whole point of us having long songs is variation in tempos/pace, hence the epicness”

What I love about modern darthrone is it sounds like they are just recording a jam session paying homage to the old classics and just having fun. Can't wait for the box set to come in! :)

They are free to make whatever music they want. It makes me laugh when suddenly someone shows up for the first time and just hears the panzerfaust and they say "they're a celtic frost plagiarism" darkthrone really isn't for everyone as manilla road or master

I think the notion that music "has to be" anything is crap. I do enjoy a lot of polished and well-written music, but primitive and raw can be just as pleasing to the musical ear.

@@ancestrosdelsol9494 yeah for instance I'm a dj into hard house and trance( always has to be had hard end of spectrum) but my point is I love music I try to find things I like in every genre ,opera is a push but in small amounts with metal it has its uses lol,point being I love music all my mates.into dance as was I but they didnt try other things there loss ,while they was at clubs my dad was taking me to see Alice cooper and stuff ,then I worked my way through all sub genres of metal thrash at 1st now finally at black metal ,yet I still like dance music ,I even incorporate some metal samples ect in my dj sets, as u say no rules ,I dont dress like a typical metal fan I'll be honest but it adds to the fun when I get odd looks when I have head phones on and I'm singing satyricon black crow on a tombstone out loud some very quizzical something dont quite add up looks ,I find it funny not doing what people expect enjoy music folks it makes the world better always :) take care

Furthermore from my point of view Mayhem only kept going because of the hype and money. They might lead a way for many many black metal bands and were a huge influence, but as I said, after dead and Euronymus they were nothing but shit.

It's like they threw all the first wave black metal (Celtic Frost, Venom, Bathory) in a blender with Pentagram, Sabbath, and Candlemass and man oh man is it a killer fucking combo. has like a 70s but blackened vibe that's pretty sick. Production is so crusty and dirty but not muffled it's got that perfect balance of atmosphere and crunch.

There's two things you can trust that will never disappoint you in life: the three first WASP albums and Darkthrone. It doesn't matter what they try to do, wheter it be death, black, crust or even doom. Each one of their albums is always someone's favorite.
This sounds like the old Darkthrone. The really old one that is. The Demo days Darkthrone. Snowfall is one of their best songs and this reminds me a lot of that song. Great!
