With the release of their highly anticipated new album ASTRAL FORTRESS imminent, Darkthrone have released the song “Caravan Of Broken Ghosts” accompanied by a lyric video filmed by Fenriz and created by Matthew Vickerstaff.
With the song, Fenriz says “there is a revisit vibe of ‘Quintessence’ at first, which is a total coincidence as it is Ted's song and I wrote ‘Q’. The song then explodes into fiercer metal, pounding and catching there as well, with clever riff shifts. And then the classic doom ending. Thank you, Ted"
The ever-productive duo of Nocturno and Fenriz continue their own metallic saga with a new selection of fine, vintage sounding headbanging classics in the making .. Astral Fortress, the band’s 20th album, will be released on Peaceville on 28 October 2022, and is a swift follow-up to 2021’s Eternal Hails opus, which comes from Darkthrone’s consistent and ongoing writing process, which has been in force for some years now. For Darkthrone does not sleep - it only waits.
Carried on the brisk wind of eager rock, with foundations in black, thrash, doom and heavy metal, Astral Fortress is the latest album of stellar, eclectic old metal in the Darkthrone odyssey. With a seemingly endless dungeon full of heavy metal influences channelled through Darkthrone’s dynamic riff-machine, plus also with many increasing inspirations taken from their own past catalogue. Even though sprinkled with atmospheric touches such as synthesizers and mellotron on Astral Fortress to great effect, the Darkthrone sound remains stripped down to the core; always primitive and organic. Darkthrone has truly become its own beast within the metal world.
‘Astral Fortress’ was recorded at Chaka Khan Studios in Oslo, the same location used for the Eternal Hails album, with Ole Øvstedal and Silje Høgevold and the album was mastered by Jack Control

i was a huge fan of celtic frost and i discovered this band recently. i do love this and yes maybe it has an influence from celtic frost but sorry celtic fros is dead and nobody will do the same lol

Cerentenly! For me Darkthrone = the Pink Floyd of metal 😄 And I mean no weak album in their discography. But music style pro(re)gression also. Well, when Pink Floyd is all over - only Darkthrone left to hail 😉

This is the most different sound for darkthrone ever. It gives mad heavy Bathory vibes
Goddam the production is so good. Not many bands out there today have this good a sound. Nothing modern or commercialized about it at all. Very unique and dynamic soundscape. The drums are so spacey and wet. The guitar has such a great scratchy mid tone. You can hear the scrapes so well from fretting. I love everything about this direction of tone. They did excellent on their own but with the help of these new guys at the new studio the last two albums have just sounded better than anything else they’ve ever recorded in my opinion. Songwriting has just been so on point too. The power of the riff is so compelling and such a driving force in everything Darkthrone does. Much love and respect. Please make an album a year! Don’t wait 3 for the next one! So glad to see this follow up to Eternal Hails the next year.
Yeah, the last two albums have been so good. Their best since Panzerfaust in my opinion.

I cant imagine how they do it but again they made something interesting, the first part smells like Bathory while the second part is like it is taken from Total Death era, amazing work!

These guys have gone through so many interesting musical phases. I think the current Candlemass phase is their best one yet. Arctic Thunder, Old Star, Eternal Hails, and Astral Fortress are all fantastic. I shudder to think what their next phase will be. Do we have some Def Leppard albums on the horizon? Some John Fogerty alligator swamp tunes, perhaps? Looking forward to see what comes next!

They perfectly can catch the very feeling of old Celtic Frost records without sounding blatant or copycat.

I love it! Although I liked Eternal Hails I also thought it was a slightly step down from Arctic Thunder and Oldstar, this on the other hand sounds like a mix of the three albums that came before. I'll await the rest of the album a bit more eagerly than before. The first part sounds akin to Bathory, but I love the Doom/Black/Thrash elements in the second half of the song as well.
