- A Chat about ways that selvedges can be used.
This video shows ways that you might like to use some of these selvedges that we are left with after cutting out fabrics. Those selvedges can be used and have quite a lot to say! The words can be used separately as well as using the longer selvedge and some leftover batting bits can be used as well. The selvedges can be stitched together to create your own fabric for projects, or stitched on to batting ready to use. Selvedges can look great used in so many projects - - wall hangings, placemats, table runners, bags, quilt blocks, maybe even a hat! ......Have fun!

Best selvage tutorial I’ve seen.
What fun!!
I love the use of the selvedge on the back of the quilt. Great way to display the fabric used in the quilt. I've always wanted to make a book shelf quilt and use the selvedge words as the titles of the books to display on the spine. Great episode. Very creative.
I have seen that too and it it cool.
I look forward to seeing it
Brilliant idea to use them as book titles. Love it!
What a lovely idea. And I absolutely loved your shadowbox dress. 😍
Thank you! 😊
I so enjoyed your video it is so encouraging for I just started to save my selvedges with plans of sewing on back of projects and using the words. I like how you have sewn them to make new material as well for the quilt block. Thank you for delicious video.
great idea
Thank you! 😊
I put cuttings and scraps from projects into a fabric bag and donate to local humane society for dog or cat beds, then when the animal is adopted they have their bed to take with them to their forever home. This is another way to use selvages~ Thank you
I can't wait to see the hat you make! Most excellent!
Excellent video: I really enjoyed your innovative and fun creations. Happy viewing for me. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it
Thank you Susan - great ideas, love the work you do and really enjoy your instructions.
So glad!
Thank you. I use the selvedges with denim as a join/sashing. Also give them to my daughter to tie up her plants. All cotton so they slowly decompose. Also, I use them as ties for various things as needed. Been wanting to make paper with them and small fabric scraps but can never find the time to learn how to do it.
Loved seeing your collection of selvedges, especially from your own fabric line 🤩
I am just starting to save selvedges because I used to cut them all off leaving none of the fabric showing. I recently saw how cute they can be when sewn together with part of the fabric showing. I love the idea of using part of the word in projects and I especially love the idea of incorporating all the selvedges in the back of a quilt. Genius.
it is a good idea to keep even a small amount of the fabric with the selvedge so you can at the very least see all the word after sewing it to something.
I'm 11:38 😢😢😢
That is beyond neat that you designed your own fabric. I have 3 fat quarters for a small childs quilt. Your stop sign quilt gave me the idea for my grandsons quilt. Tfs
I’ve been saving my salvage ends. ❤️🌺
Incorporating selvages on the quilt back is a brilliant move! I usually hand dye my own fabrics, but I recently acquired a fat quarter bundle of gorgeous Tim Holtz fabrics (mixed Abandoned and Abandoned 2). I've figured out a way to stretch these fabrics to use in 3 different quilts with some of my hand-dyed fabrics as background. I've been determined to utilize every morsel of the ultra delicious Tim Holtz fabrics and now I know what to do with the selvages! Thanks always for your awesome videos and fabulous ideas!!! ❤
Such a cute idea! Thanks for posting!
Thanks for watching!

Word isolation! My duh moment! Thanks. Have you done a tutorial on the triangular bag? If not, please consider doing that. 😃
words are such fun! I don't think I have done a tutorial on that bag, I will look, thanks!
Wonderful ideas! I love selvages, have a whole bin full, and now lots of ideas for using them! Thank you!
So glad!
Would make a nice bowl cozy; you know when you're having a bowl of hot soup or oatmeal
I love all your ideas, quilts and videos. Thank you Susan.
The quilt you show in this video..the yellow/ grey/ black...that you sew in the back a block with all selvages from fabrics used in the quilt...where can I see that whole quilt? Do you have a video for doing that quilt? Front and bag. I love it!
Hi, thanks for watching. The yellow/grey/black quilt I think is this one called That Wednesday Quilt, it is a pattern on the website, here is the link: www.gourmetquilter.com/products/that-wednesday-quilt?_pos=1&_sid=1d0dd1eb5&_ss=r
yes, there are videos also listed with the pattern on the website.
I forget that it's winter where you are. I'm in New York state where it's in the 80's, wearing shorts and tees, and there you are in long sleeves and a scarf!
and he we are having a cold snap! snow on all the nearby lower hills today
I have heard garment sewers use selvages on shoulder seams to stabilize them.
I save all my scraps even my tiny little triangle from the triangle I have yet to figure out what to do with the tiny triangles but I’m going to think of something I am working on my salvage blocks right now.
What I do is lay little bits and discarded threads on a piece of material then put a netting over top and sew, sew, sew it all together. Have you found an idea yet? I love not throwing anything away and then finding something useful to do with it all.
I notice that you have tended to use selvedges with similar colour fabrics eg the black and whites on the longer pieces you have joined together. Is this something you do or would recommend?
I do tend to colour group but there is no reason why you should, mixing up the colours works well, it just depends a little on what you want make with them.
I’m making a rope bowl and using selvages to add color to it. So surprised to see you are using selvages!
they are so useful, and like me, have lots to say!!
