Fun Time Idea using 10" squares - Quilting Tips & Techniques with GourmetQuilter

  • This video shows an idea for using some 10" squares - cut 3 at a time to make 3 blocks that can be turned and placed randomly throughout a quilt using several different colours. After cutting and joining up into a block, the block will measure 8" square so will finish at 7 1/2" when stitched into a quilt. This is a great way to use up some leftover 10" squares or cut your own. So much fun to play!

    Love that. Thx. Your design board makes me think I could make one of my own out of a quilted mattress pad.

    I love the movement in this pattern when you rearrange the block position. Another great 10 inch square project! I have made lots of little bags from one of your previous videos about 10 inch squares.

    I love this design and will soon be using this pattern! Currently I am working on one of your older patterns using 2.5" strips. I'll be quilting it 3 rows at a time, then putting it together like a QAYG. I agree with the other comment, I think you are brilliant :)

    Love the pattern but I think I would have jotted down the sizes of the patches and cut the pieces that followed to size instead of wasting the inch here, inch there. Thanks for sharing this design. ❤️

    I notice you have a Bernina, as I do. I don’t dare start a line of stitching without leaders! You can sew without them....as any on line sewers/quilters do. If I start sewing without a leader, my thread tangles, and my machine EAT the fabric. No problem to use them, but curious as to why I need them, but most people don’t? It’s almost as if my feed dogs aren’t "doing their job."

      @penniebarryofficial Před 3 lety

      Hi there - I also use leaders and enders for the same reason. My machine is a Janome. Not sure why it is for some and not others, too, but I wouldn't sew without them.

      If you look carefully you will see that Susan always holds her spool and needle thread tight before sewing preventing the nest that can sometimes occur under the start of our material. I was taught this years ago but like the starter pieces now.

      @GourmetQuilter  Před 3 lety +2

      Hi, sometimes my machine eats mine too! I find that if you put the fabric further under the foot, so that the needle comes down into the fabric about 1/8" from the edge, it usually starts fine. For many years I happily placed the fabric just under, but now consciously put it under further. I do also use leaders and enders sometimes.

      Oh dear. This explains my new Bernina snacking on the beginning of a seam. I haven’t had any lessons on the machine due to COVID so I’m grateful to find out what to do. Thanks!

      In addition it saves on thread! Some folks use 2, two” blocks as leaders and Enders. Before they know it they now have a handful of two” patches they can add to two others and wa la, a four patch!
