    Something that I noticed both on the trailer and on the History of Liberty TV program is that the ferry doesn't rock with waves like other boats in the game do, even this early in development, so maybe they ran in a scripted line and were coded like subways where you pressed a button, Niko sat down and enjoyed the ride. If that's the case, a probable cause for it being cut is it could crash into and turn over boats on its way. Another theory I have is it caused havoc with the AIs inside the tunnel under the river, much in the same way the subway causes trouble for the AIs in the Algonquin Bridge.

      I played GTA 4 now and i can conform the booth tunnel and the possible AI problems related to it are not the reason why they removed it.
      The booth tunnel is literally behind the dovks and the only places where the ferris could go are further south Algonquin and Happines island (both in south LC, while the booth tunnel is behind the ferris dock in Alderney).
      I guess the only good reason is because of the too much space it would've required to be implemented (and even because of the LAG issue in Alderney dock).

The ferry would have been a major hot spot, and maybe some kind of bridge between Staunton Island and Broker would have been built as well. A couple burgershots and other restaurants/attractions would have been included as well, but it would be concentrated on the northeast segment of the island. The rest of the island would be single-family homes and wilderness.

    Old version of the RAGE engine was having issue calculating collision between the TUG and dock. The TUG's collision is weird as it is. Referring to tring to put a bike on the TUG.
    I think the removale of the Ferry came down to use of it. I think the idea of it, was similar to LCS's Ferry system. Where the player drive the car up to the Ferry and can go to and from with their car. I think at the time, with how new the RAGE Engine was at the time, they couldn't figure out how to do that.

  • @pothatuu
    @pothatuu Před 4 lety +18

    The "boattour" icon didn't indicate a Ferry Ride, it was for another cut feature from the game (which can be seen in the second trailer, I believe) which was the Water Taxi service. The Water Taxi missions were mentioned in a lot of the pre-release articles for the game, and the missions were presumably an extension of Roman's Taxi missions. But instead of taking people from place to place via car, you're doing the same thing via boat. Brucie's boat activity uses the left-over code from this.

    You never seem to disappoint Badger. Its got me thinking, Ferries would have been a great addition to create that immersion as vibrant living Liberty City. Another thing was, Did they cut them because it took too much assets in order to create a route and create different ferry docks. Another probable Ferry dock location can be the Steinway neighborhood docks at north Broker, people spawn there at the parking lot and around that dock . I mean LCS had a Ferry system that I actually used for transport. I guess R* also suggested that probably players wouldn't use the ferry as much which is true honestly. I know I would have just to keep in that immersion. Look forward to your next video, also leaving those ads to run you deserve it.

This just reminded me of Something similar I can comment on, back in 2008 when the game had recently released, I had a friend doing building development/scripting for gta 4, obviously I cannot say who as that would be a violation of his privacy and what not. Anyway, at the time I was into boats and stuff related to that, so I asked him what boat related stuff had been cancelled/removed from the game, one of those things was ferry related stuff, they did not get into it much but it was said that it got scrapped in the middle of development,
    *as you had suggested*, and it had to do with the lag created by the boats and some other performance issues regarding that, unfinished/unoptimized scripts, ect. The reason it was cut was still mostly unclear unfortunately but he did say this: "likely because of time restrictions, didn't know why or really cared at the time to be honest with you. We where getting close to release and I had to move on to another project." I just realized at the time of typing this, the video is 9 months old. Hopefully you see it, enjoyed the video man!

Its just a small detail like the beta transparent roof of the main Bank of Liberty building, which, perhaps was causing performance issues and because of that, they made it opaque. My guess for why ferries were cut is maybe because of how they would have to maneuver when docking. Like you did with the tugboat, you had to stop and reverse it into the Algonquin docks. These vehicles like the subway and the planes that circle the city are on a track. Maybe the ferry being on a track caused it to move unrealistically. Surely it wouldn't have moved like a boat where it just sits on the water and moved around like a boat with an AI actually taking control of it. Surely it would have been on a track, like the ferry in GTA III/LCS.

    What happened when you got the tug in the dock is that the model got stuck in such a way that the physics went wild, basically you're hitting both sides of the dock and the phys engine is pinging both sides constantly, which causes the lag, normally when you hit something The game checks to see if it's solid, and then that returns true and then the vehicle "bounces" away from it, which may or may not be noticeable depending on the speed of the impact. And thats normally the end of it, but here , because it's stuck, it's essentially bouncing between both sides of the dock nearly every frame. I don't think that's why they were cut because they could just make the ferry model narrower so it wouldn't hit both sides of the dock at once. The tug boat is just slightly too wide for the dock.

    Another great and interesting video! I think it was a combination of the collision problems on console and the AI traffic in the booth tunnel that made them scrap it. Maybe they had problems getting the ferry to work as a vehicle with the water physics (with all the cars on top/smoothly getting the AI to dock), so they made it like the subways/planes and then it broke the tunnel AI? The ferry not interacting with the water probably wouldn't look right either. Especially if they had a scripted docking sequence that it had to transition into after interacting properly with the water.

  • @idoit119
    @idoit119 Před 4 lety +5

    I don’t think they removed ferries because of performance issues 1. because ferries were present and worked in GTA LCS (a game made 3 years earlier on an old engine), and 2. because in my opinion they would’ve worked the same as the subway in GTA IV or the afore mentioned LCS ferry in being able to be inside of them, riding a scripted route and have a cinematic camera, but incapable of controlling it as a player.

    • @RandomHeroGames
      @RandomHeroGames Před 4 lety +8

      1. an older engine
      Engines behave differently and this was their first open world game using this engine. GTA IV had loads of stuff cut from the game because they didn't have time to implement and or optimize. GTA V is what you get when they had plenty of time with the engine.

    I think the radar boat tour is used during the Brucie's powerboat friendship activity.
    If you pause the game during the cutscene where Niko, Brucie and his girls get out the car (a Huntley Sport with a unique paint job) to get to the boat, you can see the radar boat tour at the boat location.

  • @FreeAimDog
    @FreeAimDog Před 4 lety +1

    i see your point but i see a more simple reason like them being on a time crunch to release it so they could not release alot of the stuff, it would make it a gta to remember for sure if they did add all that stuff alittle bit like LCS.

  • @crispyandspicy6813

    My guess is that Ferries were likely similar to subways and went on a specific path and could potentially ram into boats that crossed it's path.

    • @BadgerGoodger
      @BadgerGoodger  Před 4 lety +2

      Someone else reminded me of how the trains running under the Algonquin bridge would cause vehicle traffic to freak out and immediately break or change lanes. Maybe the ferries would also disrupt traffic in the Booth Tunnel and cause cars to stop or start crashing into each other, which would basically block your path.

    When I looked at the GTA 4 trailer I always wondered about this ferry terminal it definitely feels like some unfinished part of the map.
    Remember GTA Liberty City Stories that game had working Ferry Terminal that you could use to travel between Portland and Staunton Island.
    Something like that for GTA 4 with more detailed interior would have been cool.
    It feels strange to me theres no normal way of travelling to Happiness Island other than stealing helicopter or a boat.

    Perhaps they intended the ferries to just loop and be a tourist thing as opposed to actual transport. Leaves the terminal, goes around the city and goes back into the same terminal. But that other terminal sounds legit as well. But still riding them wouldn't have been that interesting, however seeing them as scenery would have been.

    One thing to remember if you were around when GTA IV was coming out; it was delayed as it was by like a year. I remember big GTA IV display with the original date boxes, just being left empty time and time again as the date got moved back, and yet again didn’t arrive. My HMV actually took down all the marketing and displays because nobody knew when it would finally come out.
    I’ve always had the feeling that a lot of things (possibly the ferry terminal too) got put off until later stages of development, to then realise they were so behind on the game as it was, they just had to leave them alone to get the game on shelves. Then next thing you know, they’ve got RDR to finish (which was also a nightmare with bugs and physics all through development apparently) and then GTA V.

    NGL, the Swingset championships would actually be a really great game to play.
    Like, you could create a game out of it like this:
    Two or more people get together and each get like 10 attempts, with each result scoring different points.
    Out of the swing set park: 1 point
    Over the buildings: 3 points
    Into Outlook park: 5 points
    Past Outlook park: 7 Points
    Out of broker/queens: 10 points
    I might experiment with this, as this is just a rough idea. But I think I might be onto something here. What do you guys think?

    Its interesting considering ferries were used in GTA liberty City stories so you would think they could modify that to work in GTA 4, it's possible they decided they were redundant, unless they really did visit the statue of happiness, and were to glitchy to fix.

  • @Rexxie44
    @Rexxie44 Před 4 lety +1

    I think the logical thing to ferries being removed from the game is simply the fact the game likely didn't support ai finding pathways on off rails moving vehicles. They'd have to be seated down.
    This wasn't a thing in Red Dead Redemption either unless the train was fully stopped or there was hard scripting during a mission. During RDR2 however, the trains seem to be coded to have pathways for ai to maneuver on and weren't treated weirdly either. One thing I noticed immediately between the two was the fact you couldn't use your laso on the train in the first game but can in the second. I'm guessing it may be tied somewhere to player movement on an object. Nevertheless, very interesting video and fascinating discovery in regards to the bug at the docks, that very well could have been it.
