    The $0 dollar pencils aren't as vibrant in color, but they do give the picture a smoother, less grainy look.

      Agreed he may be using the fancy ones differently pressing too hard/light etc.
      I used fancy ones from walmart but they were not 80 $ (That's just insane and needs help lol) and i found drawing at an angle and using swift light pressure worked best

    • @raffvids
      @raffvids Pƙed 7 lety +121

      It's because the cheapos are like 70% filler and you have to go full scribble to get any color at all. In the process you end up digging into the whole tooth of the paper but without any saturation - so you get light colors and no grain.

    • @ivain8704
      @ivain8704 Pƙed 7 lety +30

      +raffvids agreed, I bet it also took him way longer to get the same level of detail with the cheap ones than with the expensive (and then he could go further with the expensive). Normally, you'd use a blender for pencils like this to completely get rid of the grain, but for this video I guess that'd be a bit unfair for the comparison, not to mention a load of work.

    • @EmiGoesRawrr
      @EmiGoesRawrr Pƙed 7 lety +47

      The reason it's grainy is because he isn't pressing hard enough with the expensive pencils. It was one of the first habits that was beaten out of me in school; ideally you should press hard with your pencils, but at the same time, it's a bit more difficult to blend easily when you're working with a solid base colour.

      It's mostly the texture of the paper. The highly pigmented, expensive pencils are softer and you don't have to press down as much, or as often. Which also means the pigment will sit on top of the paper texture more. So until you begin actually blending them, the paper texture will show through. :)

    I think the reason why the cheap pencils may look more appealable to the eyes is because the colouring technique used, the expensive pencils leave a coloured "trail", like if he scratched the side of the tip of the pencil into the paper to speed up the process. Since the cheap ones doesn't have that much saturation, you can barely notice this "trail", so it looks more faded and complete, if he actually used another colouring technique, maybe he would have made the expensive colours look better.

      That is a statement made by anti-artists in the 1900s, that one phrase they made killed the artstyle you see in classical museums, that's why today, most paintings are just dots and slabs of color, classical abstract paintings where more than just splashed colors back then.
      That's why we rarely see paintings comparable to Leonardio Da Vinci, Bob Ross (he was an exception in the 80s) etc. Those type of paintings are rare now. A piece of dung is not art, a small dot is not art, worn down clothing are not nessecarily art.
      One man's glasses fell in an art museum and everyone crowded it and took photos like it was real art, that's the problem with today.
      Moral: Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but there should always be a judge. We should not just place a wooden planck on the ground and say "the wooden planck represents the days it was on a ship, for the years it gone by, the dust represents its history" then put it on the history museum, unless it was from something insignificant like some man took wooden plancks from the deck and sold them for some reason.

    I like the lighter colours with the left, it may be because of the image along with the colours. There is quite a few aspects to like from both of them though. Honestly I would say if you have expensive supplies also have cheap ones as they both give different results. If you want one effect you may not be able to get it with high dollar ones, as well as vice versa.

I'm 23 and drawing my whole life, and i only started to buy expencive supplies 3 years ago. If you give your heart and soul to your drawing/painting/etc, cheap supplies or not, you can make art. Art isn't all about how expencive the supplies are you are making it with, but also the heart and soul you put in it. Thanks Jazza, to always inspire me and all other artists around the world. Lunatic Potato The expensive ones definitely have what I would describe as a clay-like texture, more akin to a crayon. It's probably because of how malleable the lead is. A slightly less expensive, harder lead would probably beat the original with the sharpness of the expensive ones. However, he could have spent a lot less time with the expensive ones and that could be a factor.

    • @EggiTheShadow

      It's probably just the type/brand of the pencil he was using.. im sure you can get expensive pencils which a have that same smugy/hazy? effect which have stronger, more defined colours than the cheap pencils shown in the video. It wasn't a direct comparison, but that wasn't really the point of the video anyway

    • @piedcamelart
      @piedcamelart Pƙed 7 lety +7

      Caran D'ache Luminance are amazing pencils, just the few I've worked with, I absolutely adore them. But that said, there's a lot that can effect how a piece comes out with higher end pencils, everything from how hard you press, to using a paint thinner for blending, right down to the type of paper and how much tooth it has. This paper doesn't look like it has much in the way of tooth, I have no idea how hard he's pressing, or how sharp the pencils are. It seems like he was just trying to get it done, which is fine, and it does show a bit of the blending qualities of these pencils, along with the richness of the pigments (and the main selling point behind Luminance is their lightfastness). But they are far more impressive than what you see here.

    In my honest opinion, I really did prefer the $0 pencils to the Swiss ones. Mainly because, like Jazza said, they gave a softer feel, a more fairytale look and asthetic. The Swiss pencils I feel were too bold for the picture but, was still brighter and more colourful.
    But, it was a little unfair because he didn't use the same colour limitations. What I mean is limiting his amount of pencils when using the Swiss brand. With more pencils of course he would have more shades and colour, so I would like to see him do it with a pencil limitation too (Even if we all know the outcome!)

    I liked the cheap ones most, the color is of course less intense, but it doesn't have that ugly pencil texture

      in order to get rid of the grainy pencil texture you can either apply more pressure with the colors or a colorless blender, or you can use an odorless mineral spirit as a solvent to dissolve the colors :)

      pukahuna. Finally someone said it! the expensive ones leave weird patches on the paper, while the cheap ones make everything look a lot smoother. That's just my opinion though.

      subrina Kosin I think that's mostly due to the fact that the cheaper ones are more waxy as opposed to the more expensive ones which also means it mostly lays on top and glides across the paper and doesn't cling into the grooves which is why the texture of the paper can show. Also the non waxy consistency is what allows for blending and layering of colours. I do agree though, I always found it annoying and less appealing :(

      Tobblesmash there is a thing called practice

    • @Silentgrace11
      @Silentgrace11 Pƙed 7 lety +14

      Practice makes perfect :) You may not be able to draw now (or draw to the capacity you want to, considering that if you're able to put a shape onto paper you can draw), but every single time you draw your work gets better than the last time you did. You try new things, become more daring with your technique, and learn from past mistakes with each and every attempt, whether you're holding a pencil for the first time or you're a master artist. I got to learn this first hand this year. For my senior thesis I chose to make a children's book based in extensive research I've done over the past four years, and my advisers presented me with the challenge of self illustrating it (despite having never taken an art class in my life). Within the course of a year my technique has become faster and smoother, my backgrounds more realistic, and now my characters actually look like...well, characters, which is a major feat for me since I'm not very good at drawing key characteristics like eyes and hands. It may take a long time for you to see any visible progress, sometimes, but by all means there is still progress being made. You just have to keep going.

      To be fair, the "grainy" look is part from not enough layers on the paper, not using proper paper for technique, and not blending. Cheaper pencils won't sink into the tooth as well as the luminance do since they aren't made for layering and building but rather for children

    I really want to take a tortillon to the second drawing. The really soft lead makes the texture so crunchy it almost hurts. I’d love the bright colors with the smooth application of the free pencils.

      I agree, but I’d use solvent. I once very stupidly did a complex colored pencil piece on paper with too much texture and ended up with literal blisters.
