I have noticed that the sets Prismacolor pencils that I bought at Target had some quality/cosmetic deficiencies, but the coloring quality itself was fine. The individual ones purchased at my local fine art supply store were cosmetically what I expected…no problems. I think Prismacolor’s management must think they can get away with selling less than first quality when they’re sold at big box stores or maybe on Amazon. This would be a marketing miscalculation, of course. They just need to be consistent, wherever they sell their products. I do think and heard they’ve improved the crappy quality since this was a massive problem and widely reported in 2021. Now that it’s near the end of 2022, I’m hoping they’ve improved….I haven’t bought any Prismacolors at Target in 2022.
Hi Nancy Loomis and welcome to the channel. I totally agree - it's bad enough in these challenging times that the pencils are so expensive but they do need to be consistent. I have found that when I buy them open stock the pencils were totally fine but when I bought my original 72 pack that was when I had the pencils with the defects as shown in the clip. Just to let you know Polys just need more layers to get that smooth finish your after. I have a very light pressure by nature and even my firmist pressure leaves something to be desired with burnishing so I've learned how to layer. Luminance and prismas don't work as well for me for that exact reason. Just thought I would pass that on.

Have you used blending agents like Gamsol with these ? Just curious how the pigments blend. Layering can cause wax buildup which can limit the intensity from my understanding. Thoughts ?

Genuine question: would it be ideal to sharpen the off centered led pencils with a sharp knife/blade? Have you tried that and is it helpful?

Yes you can have your cake and eat it to. They are all worthy brands, I choose the light fast pencils from each set pick the colors for whatever my subject matter is and draw away. Glad some else can see the sense in this:)

I think it’s ridiculous that you have to pay loads of money for Prisma and you get crappy barrels and/or leads. For this reason I was scared to buy a big set. In the end I bought the Portrait set and I was lucky. Every pencil was in perfect shape and the tips didn’t break! 😮
Anyway, I noticed that you use oil-based pencils and wax-based pencils on the same paper. Both pencils react different if you use the right paper for them. In theory wax should perform better on paper with hardly any tooth and oil on paper with tooth. But…it is more complicated than that. I’m the past week I’ve tried five different brands of pencils on five different kinds of paper (no worries, there wasn’t any printingpaper involved ;-)) I was really surprised about the outcome. Strathmore 300 Bristol vellum was the worst paper for Luminance, Pablo and Prismacolor. Not only The polychromos performed better but also the FC-Black edition, which are the wax-pencils 😮
My point is that paper really makes a big difference. I don’t often see videos of testing different kinds of paper, therefor I did it myself, but I would really be interested in a video about it.
Because ‘the world of paper’ is driving me crazy 😂
Hi @grasspriet - thanks for your comments - I am trying to finish a painting at the moment so a bit tricky to fit it in any content but thanks for highlighting this point as I really welcome people giving me ideas of struggles they have with art techniques and materials.
@@SpectrumArtStudio A painting is something really different than coloured pencils. 😁 I’ve tested some more paperbrands. Eleven paperbrands and on each paperbrand I tested nine different pencilbrands. As always, I was way too ambitious 😓 So it is a hell of a job 🫢
