Should the camera settings be set to Auto or Manual focus for this to work properly? Especially looking at using for Photo Stacking capabilities. Dragging the Focus Area box is very buggy on the free trial I've downloaded. If you try and move it, it looks the whole thing up (even on a super specked M1 Mac Book Pro) and only way of getting it to move the focus point back to the subject is to detach the tether cable and start again.

Smart Shooter 5 will work with the camera in either AF or MF mode. If your lens or camera body has a physical AF / MF switch, that should generally be set to AF. You should then be able to put the camera in AF or MF either in the camera menu or via the Camera Controls panel in Smart Shooter 5.
The Focus Adjustment buttons on the top edge of the Live View windows will allow you to adjust focus manually (in MF). This can be used to reliably adjust focus by set increments (small, medium, large).
The Focus Stacking script in the Scripts menu can be used to automatically adjust focus during a series of exposure using the same increments (noted above).
If you are experiencing any unexpected behavior and/or if you have any additional questions about the features discussed above, please feel free to reach out to techsupport@tethertools.com.
      Thanks

Feature question: Are layout overlays supported? In case I'm not making myself clear, this means importing a layout (say, a sketch of an ad) and showing it as a semi-transparent overlay so you can compose the shot to fit the layout. Canon and Olympus tethering apps have this feature; wondering if yours does.

      Thanks for the question.
Yes! Smart Shooter 5 does have an overlay feature that can be used with Live View. In a Live View window, you will see the gear icon. In that fly-out menu, at the bottom, you will see an "Image Overlay" section. In that area, you will be able to turn on and off the overlay, set the opacity of the overlay image and load an overlay image using the 'select image' button.
The Image Overlay feature should work well for the application that you have described. Naturally, if you run into any issue with that or any other feature, please let us know. Please feel free to reach out directly to techsupport@tethertools.com

I'll give it a try. I have been using Smart Shooter 4 with a Sony α7iii, Mac, and Lightroom Classic - initially with success, but the stability is now so poor that I can't practicably use it in front of clients. I've spent a lot of time troubleshooting to no avail.

Hi - we would certainly expect this setup to work without issue. Connection stability can be affected by several different factors. Most commonly, the issue is caused by the USB Power Supply being ON. We always recommend turning that OFF during tethering. With that said, there are also a few other factors which could explain this behavior, depending on the specific type of setup that you are using. In any case, we would be happy to look into this issue with you. Therefore, please reach out to techsupport@tethertools.com at your convenience so that we can troubleshoot this issue with you.

@Aries777 High Burst + High Res images can certainly test the limits of the setup. With that said, we are not aware of any specific issues in this case. From the description, it is not clear if the transfer / computer is the limiting factor or if, as you suggested, the card write speed is causing the issue. In any case, we would be happy to investigate this further with you. Please feel free to reach out to techsupport@tethertools.com

Hi, I'm testing smart shooter, and considering incorporating the software to my workflow. My question regarding the software is, and perhaps it's a simple solution and I'm just missing the tab or setting on how to correct it, when shooting portrait mode on my camera that's tethered to smart shooter the images appear sideways on my computer screen and enabling for photos to be automatically rotated within my camera's setting doesn't seem to fix the issue. shooting with a Canon R6 tethered to a windows PC running windows 10.

Thanks for the question. Smart Shooter 5 will use the orientation written to the photo EXIF data. Most cameras will write this information to the image file, but some cameras will not (we don't have specific information on if the R6 does). In Smart Shooter 5, this setting is located in the Preview window, under the gear icon in the options bar across that window. In the pop-up menu, you will find the orientation section there. Please check both boxes under orientation.
If the camera does not write this information to the file (and thus, the image is not rotated automatically with the setting above), you can always apply an orientation to the camera so that Smart Shooter 5 applies the rotation internally. To do this, go to the camera tab and right-click on the camera. You will see the option to "Set Orientation" which will allow you to apply a standard rotation to the camera. This will then apply a rotation in the software to all incoming images from that camera.
Hopefully that information is helpful, but please feel free to reach out to techsupport@tethertools.com if you experience any issues.

Hi, I'm hesitating to buy smart shooter (I'm an amateur and I work with a canon m6 mkii). I don't understand why you have to disable live view to see the photos you've taken. Why is it not possible to have the live view and the preview of the last photo taken at the same time?
    Thank you

Thanks for the comment. We just sent you an email regarding this. However to summarize this here: You should absolutely be able to view the Live View and Preview windows simultaneously. It is important to note that you would need to access Live View in a dedicated Live View window, not using the "LV" icon in the Preview window. If you continue to experience the issue, please respond to the email we sent so that we can troubleshoot this futher.

Does it suppoirt focus stacking with a7IV or is it just for the R series?

    • @Tethertools
      @Tethertools  Před 8 měsíci +1

Focus stacking is supported for all compatible cameras, including the Sony a7 IV.
However, please note that some Sony cameras will not produce a noticeable change in focus on the "Small" focus increment. This will affect focus stacking and, on affected cameras, will produce no noticeable change in focus between all the images in the 'stack'. The medium and large focus increment in focus stacking will work on all compatible cameras, without issue. We would suggest using the 30-day free trial to determine if your Sony camera is affected by this issue.
