I was completely fooled by Sevro's fake death at first. Oooh, the rage was real! Nobody breaks up the Goblin and Reaper dream team! Lol awesome twist. By the way, you didn't mention Adrius' nuclear endgame and the fist pump moment I had when Darrow rips the tongue out of the Jackal's psychopathic head.

+Blood of the Ruh Yea, it took some serious courage to keep reading at that point! And yea, that ending was incredible and awesome! There was just so much to mention, I also forgot the Howler initiation, which I thought was hilarious!

I just finished Morning Star last night and man what an awesome conclusion to the first trilogy. I absolutely loved it. I was so happy that Darrow and Cassius got back together again. I was totally fooled by Cassius attack on Sevro. It was all so good. I was so sad with Ragnars death 😭. Such a great trilogy.

    NOTE: SPOILERS!!!! SPOILERS!!! SPOILERS!!!
DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVEN'T FINISHED MORNING STAR!!!!
Great review! I was also devastated by the loss of Ragnar! He was my favorite from Golden Son. To see him develop from an Obsidian killer/sword to really take hold of the life that Darrow offered him was so moving! I loved the point in Golden Son when he said to Darrow "You are not always right." At that point he has finally internalized that Darrow is not a god. He may be a Gold but he can make mistakes, he can misjudge situations, he can be wrong. That is when Ragnar starts to make his own decisions and starts to live his own life. And the scene where he comes in and all the little children are happy to see him! He is no longer a feared "weapon". He has become a shield.
Probably the most moving scene in Morning Star for me was the ceremony the Golds performed before the start of the battle with Roque's fleet. It sounds like a beautiful ceremony, harking back to their ancestors and their history. But Darrow stands apart with Sefi. It is here that it is clear that he now sees himself as simply a person. Not a Gold, not a Red, but a person. It is very moving. To me, it marks a real transition point for his character.
I was so sad that Darrow was not able to turn Roque. I always thought that Roque had some kind of really tragic backstory that led him to completely buy into the whole honor and duty thing. When he tells Darrow at the Institute to keep swimming, it is as if he has been there, and he has been in a situation where though he feels lost he must just keep going or he will die. I so wanted Roque to have redemption. I was sobbing when he was lost!
I was also sobbing when Darrow and Cassius were on Roque's ship watching the videos of the Institute that Roque had watched...watching where they had been in that time before everything turned dark and they became enemies.
With the ending, I think I just didn't really believe Sevro was gone. I think I didn't believe Pierce would kill him off. When I was at the book signing in Denver, someone asked about the death of Pax. Pierce said that he had decided he was going to kill off someone, someone who had a developed character arc that we wouldn't suspect, and he put all the names in a hat except for Mustang. There was kind of this collective gasp of the crowd when we realized that if fate had been different, it could have been Sevro that was lost instead of Pax. Pierce said that losing Pax really messed up his plans so Ragnar kind of took the place of Pax.
I am glad that Darrow has a son, and that life goes on. I am REALLY glad that we will be getting three more books in this universe!! Though I would have loved to know the history of Lorn au Arcos. I was REALLY devastated when he was killed. I wanted to smack him when he killed Tactus, but totally understood why he did it. But he was so tragic; the old warrior who just wanted to go and live in peace, enjoy his grandchildren, and fade away.
I am hoping that Lysander figures in the new trilogy. I think he has an important part to play as the descendant of both the Sovreign and of Lorn. He really saves Luna with his idea of contacting his godfather.
OK. Enough. I think since your title says spoilers it is OK to put all this here, but if there is a way you want it hid, let me know so next time I can do it right!
Now I can't wait for next year when Iron Gold comes out!!!!

      +Janis Schubert SPOILERS BELOW:
Yes! Ragnar's development was so rich and wonderful, and his death so sad, but necessary to help win over Sefi and the Obsidians. And Sefi is pretty baller. But he definitely epitomized what the Rising could do, how it could better people and let them live the lives they wanted.
The ceremony was definitely moving, and I agree that Darrow's choice to remain apart of it shows his growth and lack of identification with any of the colors but with himself and his ideals.
The whole story with Roque and Darrow is so heartbreaking anyway, and I think part of that is because we all have that friend whom we grow apart from, and breaking up with a friend is always hard (if not harder than breaking up with a romantic relationship). I felt so torn for both of them :(
I didn't know that story about Pax! That's nuts! It's the reality of war though, sometimes people die by chance, by bad luck, and sometimes the wrong person dies. But thank goodness it wasn't Sevro. AND we got Ragnar because of it!
YES! 3 more books! Except that also makes me scared that some of these beloved characters can/will still die... But it also gives the opportunity to flesh out some of the minor characters, and maybe we will get more info on Lorn, and Lysander will come back into play in some way. I'm also excited about the Syndicate and how that's going to come into play more.
I think the spoiler heading is fine, I don't know of another way to do it, and anyone coming in the comments of this video SHOULD know it's a place for potential spoilers since the video is too... though some people didn't read the title, lol.

+WhyMermaids When I saw that the new book was going to be Iron Gold I thought it might be about Lorn. I would love to know his backstory, how he came to be the most powerful Olympic Knight of the empire. I think he was a lot like the Moon Lord. Maybe we will learn more about Lorn in connection with Lysander. I like Lysander! He seems to have an openness and straightforward approach to the political games that might serve him well in the future. He has no illusions about what the stakes are in the games they play.
Definitely something to look forward to in 2017!!

Janis Schubert This trilogy just had so many emotional moments... I think no book had ever moved me so much before! Almost every single death was a devastating gut punch. Pax, Tactus and Ragnar obviously take the cake. I always knew Roque was going to die as of the end of Golden Son. I didn't see Cassius' redemption coming, though. And I have to say, it was such a satisfying moment. Pierce created such great and compelling characters...
I actually fully believed Sevro was dead. Pierce hadn't shied away from murdering our favourites before, and I figured he'd save the most gut-wrenching one for the climax of book 3. So... yeah, I never cry while reading books, but after reading Sevros fake death, I stared blankly in shock for maybe 5 minutes. Similarly, when he turned out to still be alive, I _laughed_ in relief for 10 minutes!

    Spoilers
When Servo hanged himself along side Cassius, it wasn't particularly the 'bromance' in my opinion. Servo did that as a tactical method to stop the Obsidians from further causing a coup de tat against the allied Gold's. As the obsidians violent reaction was a reaction of Uncle Narol's death, thus blaming the Gold's. But Darrow doesn't want that sort of system and thinking to go on, thus Servo steps in. Hangs himself and confuses Sefi, letting Sefi think about it.

Great video. You always make amazing reviews with and without spoilers. 5 stars for the book and for you ;)
Now I'm reading The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss (872 pages :S ) I hope it's worth it, wish me luck =)
    -SPOILERS-
I finished this book a few days ago but I wanted to wait a little to gather my thoughts about it. Overall I liked it, I gave it 5 stars. But first things first, I LOVE the first two thirds of the book. I reread the last few chapters of GS and MS felt like if I just turned the page of one and continued with the other as just one giant book, the pace was great, the action scenes were incredible and the new character were interesting, but the last third for me was less amazing.
I think that the way Darrow and Victra were tortured was right on point, but come on 9 month doing nothing, just left alone with their tortures, it's like if the Jackal were waiting for them to scape. How long he needs to kill someone? I understand that Pierce needed that time for the war to evolve and for Mustang to have her baby, but I don't know that was the purpose of kept them alive if they already told Jackal everything he wanted.
Then we had the rescue, which was MIND BLOWING, just perfect, I never suspected that they could use a clawDrill to do it.
I love Sevrus since RR but in MS he grow up so much and with Victra, they're So cute. I hope that in the new trilogy we have a chance to see them as parents. I didn't expect him to become in Ares and take care of everything while Darrow was kidnapped, and I like how he is still in change for a little longer because Darrow needs to recover both fisical and emotional's way.
Ragnar's death was So painful, I started sobbing and had to stop for a few minutes, and I liked Sefi as a character, she's strong, bold a good leader for her people but I never trusted her. Deep down I knew that she'd betray Darrow. But how did she become the lider of all obsidian if she was on the Morning Star, how did she communicate with all of them? On the other hand Roque's death was perfect for a poet, Darrow's plan of using the crawDrill to attack Roque's ship was EVERYTHING. Two men, a red battled a gold, each one with their weapons and at the end the red won. I liked also that was a pink who opened the door, and that at the end he kill himself.
But then..... Darrow had to go and destroy the docks of Ganymede and NO ONE cared. He killed thousands of people mainly low colors JUST FOR PRECAUTION, and I don't understand why that it's different of what Octavia did with Rhea or what Jackal did with Luna. All of them killed everyone they could to reach their goal. Not always if you are a villain you do evil things and if you are a hero you do right things, and I didn't like the hypocrisy Pierce handled this subject. The message the end justifies the means to me is always so weak and wrong.
After that came the revelion in MS, but thanks goodness we have Sevro who saved the day and Cassius's ass in addition he got Victoria's proposal (L). I also think that the wedding was perfect timing to low the tension after all that action.
I never felt Sevro's dead real, it's imposible that Pierce would have done that, Darrow and Cassius were talking and drinking just few pages ago and at the end Darrow gave something to him, so to me, it was clear that they were acting for Antonia.
At the end, they killed Octavia, The Jackal, Lilath and Aja. Mustang became Sovereign, Darrow became definetly in a red hero and she and Darrow went to Earth.
Darrow met Pax and they get their happy ending, but to get it, they betrayed the Moon Lords, they joined all obsidian under the power of a woman that actually betrayed them once before, they took the gold supremacy from all the families and practically there are no references about they want to reorganize their society. Pierce already told us that the new government was not a democracy, most reds will still work in the mines because is necessary, a gold still runs over everyone so what will happen with the other colors? What about pinks, are they still used for sex? Can gold families still have slaves, and servants? I think that this book was good, that Darrow got a good ending, but I'm not so sure about his cause so now I'm afraid about what Pierce Brown wants to do with his new trilogy Iron Gold.
Although for me all are 5 stars books my rating within this trilogy is: First: RR A+, Second: GS A, Third: MS A-
PS: I almost forgot how in the hell Mustang told Darrow's mom about Pax but not him, He has some serious problems with the women he loves. EO 2.0 (LOL) Luckily she didn't die.

    • @WhyMermaids
      @WhyMermaids  Před 8 lety

+Patricia Garrido Thank you!! I'm hoping to read The Name of the Wind either over Spring Break or summer! Let me know what you think when you finish!
I didn't end up rereading any of GS beforehand (I just read a recap summary), so I can't attest to that, and for me the beginning actually felt a little draggy and weird in comparison to the rest of the series. I do agree that the Jackal's keeping of Darrow so long is a bit strange and convenient (for the sake of the story), but at the same time, look what happened when he actually decided to move Darrow: Darrow escapes. By leaving him under the table for so long, with Darrow having no idea where he was or how he could escape, it prevented escape plans from hatching. If you remember, Darrow was about to kill himself when the Jackal finally raised him up. But yea, that rescue was AWESOME. The clawDrill took me COMPLETELY off guard.
Ragnar's death is what told me stuff was going down and that Pierce wasn't holding back. It made me scared for the other characters. And yes, Sevro's development is WONDERFUL. I was so worried about his "death" because he'd JUST gotten married... I thought it might be another case of THG or GOT. Sefi also worried me, because she didn't play by any rules but her own, and even though she betrayed Darrow, she did it for the best interests of her people, who'd been oppressed for SO. LONG.
Roque's death was beautiful and eloquent and heartbreaking.
And YES, I'd forgotten about the docks! I wasn't a fan of that either. But it was in character; Darrow has a history of making bad decisions, and while this one was one I didn't agree with, I understand where he was coming from, that it would escalate the war to a different level and prevent the Moon Lords from coming after him again. You KNOW this is going to come back up in the next books, and it'll come back to bite him.
And yea, I was really happy that the book showed some of the effects of the war on the people and not just the heroes, but I did want to see what they would do to reorganize everything, and how Darrow and Mustang would go about doing that. The Golds aren't just going to take it lying down, and most of the Reds (or other colors) aren't going to want to stop doing what they're used to, because that's life for them. I think the changes will have to be small and over time; slowly they will start to see one another as equals, Reds won't be treated as slaves but as paid and valued workers, and hopefully Pinks can get out of that life and maybe just be maids rather than sex slaves?
I actually liked GS the least because all the space battles slowed the pace for me, but RR was definitely my favorite of the trilogy as well.

I watched The Golden Son review and then came right here for the Morning Star review. And quite honestly, do you have to have that background music on? It's very irritating and distracting. Takes away from the emotions that you're trying to convey. It's over edited. The Golden Sun review was really raw. It's better that way.
