    The Audiobook is the best one I have ever listened to. I have around 800 in my library. The narrator brings the story to life. Like you, I fear reading the next trilogy because the ending was so perfect.

    The scene in golden son when Darrow and Sevro capture the Vanguard, that to me was when you really meet the reaper and the goblin. Frickin' incredible!

    I was loving the trilogy regardless; but brown hooked me hard in each and every book, including iron gold and dark age. One of my favorites was when Darrow had pax whip him. That was written and played out flawlessly. That moment endeared the rising to me on a deeper level.
    Also, in iron gold and dark age we branch out and get to dive into other perspectives. Lysander giving us a first person perspective on the ferocity and terror of facing Darrow and his legions; added a beautiful layer to the vision I have of Darrow.
    Awesome vid though. Hail Reaper

      P S believe me I understand that feeling lol. You invest in a story and get lost in the world. Then it’s over and that world slowly dies away inside your mind. Rising was definitely one of the worst comedowns I’ve had, stories just felt a little stale afterwards. Red rising is just a genre bender that is hard to find elsewhere. It has its own flavor for sure.
      But, if you’re wanting that addiction type story similar to the feeling you got from rising, I can name 2 that for sure will give you that.
      First is Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson.
      Second is unsouled by Will Wight. Guaranteed you won’t be disappointed

    I am reading Red Rising, about at 30%. One problem that is bugging me that since its written from Darrow POV, the Author tells things about world that there is no way Darrow would have known from his early life in mines. It's not there is CNN or Fox down in Reds that tell you whats going on above/ But when Darrow was preparing for the test, he tells how many levels the Golds are divided into and some other details about Golds and the rest of the world that unless you are watching MarsTube on your datapad, you would not have known. Anyways, I'll keep pushing.

    hii! so I realize i'm 2+ years too late, but I wanted to leave a comment regardless because it is sO hard to find a decent book review on this series on youtube. I'd love to get into how I first found the series, it's quite unique, but I don't want to drag on. First off, kudos to you for literally not spoiling anything even while talking about the series as a whole. I had my doubts when you first said that, but you did very well in explaining the books, some themes, and the intricacies of the characters. Also, I 100% feel you on how we like it when characters die. It's morbid, but like you said, it makes it that much more real. I loved how Darrow isn't perfect. He fucks up, and he fucks up majorly with some major consequences. How his fuck ups affect not just some off hand character, but affects his friends directly as well. Even to the point of betrayal. uff, I could go on and on. Regardless, thank you so much for doing this. I appreciate you:))

Oh my goodness I loved them so much at the time. I remember spending an entire school day reading and reading on the bus home and reading once I got home. I finished a book and a half that day. My favorite of the series (or at least the most memorable) was the vampire trials? Something like that. I'm sure you know what I'm talking about!

  • @VicRibeiro777
    @VicRibeiro777 Před 4 lety

    Just finished the trilogy yesterday, so held off on watching your vid. A good vid with good observations as we have come to expect from Elliott.
    (Some SPOILERS so skip if you haven't read the books please!)
    The first book was good. It fits into what I understand YA to be. (The next two books for me is straight up adult sci-fi/sci-fan)
    It also pulled from a lot of popular elements like the hunger games, this is book 1 with the institute.
    So, the first book was good, but looking back I can really see the author improving his craft with the next two books.
    I enjoyed Golden son a great deal. The Iron Rain was wow...
    The twists were good. It was really well put together, but it sort of ended on a cliffhanger, and I don't always like that when authors subject their readers to it, as it would have frustrated me immensely to wait a year or more for the next book to come out.
    Fortunately, Morning Star was at hand and i started it 10 minutes after finishing book 2.
    The third book really stands out to me. The author upped his game, there were more attention to detail with regards to military tactics and actual hand to hand combat.
    If people are familiar with MMA they would recognise certain moves, it was done magnificently.
    I've read a complaint that the third book was just war and the reader got bored with it...
    I can understand that the amount of action may be jarring at points, but it felt organic to me, this was the endgame, all the pieces were in place, a lot of action are to be expected then.
    If i have some criticism, it would be that I would have liked to see the surviving friends meet up, see how they were doing how they were coping.
    But the series overall, great.
    (Final spoiler:
    I nearly broke my e-reader when a certain smaller character died.
    I wanted to howl and punch something, the betrayal was a donkey kick in the gut...)

    Someone should note there is bisexuality throughout this world. Like it's a normal thing (read: everyone's doing it). I'm a live and let live person. However, I have no interest in reading about men being romantically involved with each other, including descriptions of physical interaction. (Don't want to visualize that). This should be disclosed on the cover or the preface of the book so those that aren't interested can make another selection.

      @Alexander-tu3iv Před 3 lety +3

      So you're cool with visualising sexual assault, dismemberment, torture and extremely gory violence. But vague allusions to two dudes fucking is crossing the line?
      A bisexuality warning may be tolerable for christian lit. But once you get into genres like this which is borderline grimdark, it's generally assumed that readers enjoy, or at least tolerate being pushed outside their comfort zone.
      Publishers aren't going to waste resources on niche content warnings like consensual gay sex. Because it's kinda a weird thing to get triggered by considering the genre. Might as well put in content warnings for arachnophobia at that point.
