    Best part of Pierce Brown’s writing by far is the relationships between characters. Darrow and Sevro being best bros is one of the best friendships I’ve ever read!

    • @mikesbookreviews
      @mikesbookreviews  Před 4 lety +3

      Without a doubt. So much in fact when Sevro and Darrow are apart, I feel like I can "feel" them missing each other, ha ha. Brown's forte really is in the characters and I never expected that in a series that truly is non-stop action.

    I think Cassius and Darrow's relationship was better for them being at loggerheads from mid-book 1 onwards. Their relationship works, IMO, because they have that first section of book 1 where they gel so well, and have such great synergy, but end up being pulled to opposite sides of the war by forces that are really beyond their control, before coming back together at the end. They undergo parallel arcs, but end up...not at the same place, but with a lot of the same perspectives from what they go through to get there.
    It also wouldn't be practical to keep it from Cassius that Darrow killed his brother. The Institute is a yearlong interview for patronage, and there's no way it isn't common knowledge to the Imperators and Governors watching who ended up killing whom.

    I thought Morning Star was just as good if not better than Golden Sun.. The pace kept me reading and I really latched onto the character relationships. I think Golden Sun was so good that it propelled me into Morningstar and I thought maybe it was that momentum that made me think it was so good artificially, but after reflecting Morningstar's quality from a character standpoint and that maturity plus the space battle narratives edges it for me over Golden sun. Like you, I thought the first book was ehh...and I almost didnt read the next two. What a mistake that would have been!

    • @mikesbookreviews
      @mikesbookreviews  Před 4 lety +1

      I won't argue at all with anyone who likes MS the best of the trilogy. It was dang good. I think I elevate Golden Son because I went into it with my arms crossed after RR and it blew me away. It scratched that Ender's Game itch I had wanted and I immediately just imprinted upon it. But I have great news for you; the sequel books are just as good. At least they have been to me. If I'm ranking them right now I'd go
      1 Golden Son
      2 Iron Gold
      3 Morning Star
      4 Dark Age
      5 Red Rising
      (and I loved Dark Age. That's just how strong this series is now)

    Real coincidence how every time I finish a book in this series you dropped a review 1 or 2 days in advance. Had the same with Golden Son. You cant make that timing up! Just finished this one 10mins ago and I loved to watch your take on the previous books after I finished them too, and now I found out u uploaded this yesterday lol. Love your channel Mike keep it up, I was never the biggest reader but a buddy of mine got me into it and I'm excited to read some of the books you spoke highly of in earlier videos. But I'm hyped for the next 2 books in this series!
    SPOILERS AHEAD!!!!!
    The thing I loved most about this book was that the other characters really had more time to shine compared to the other books. Also some of the dialogues like the meeting with Au Raa and Roque and the 1 on 1 whiskey drinking session with Cassius were really good. Lastly I think what really made this book stand out from the rest of the trilogy (not saying it is better, I think 2 is the best as well) are the chapters about the Obsidian homeland and Asgard, the lore of their people, clans and culture and the introduction to the Rim, the Moonlords and the landscapes of those moons around Jupiter. I always loved his worldbuilding but he really knocked it out of the park with this one. So fun to read.

    • @mikesbookreviews
      @mikesbookreviews  Před 4 lety +1

      I love it when a plan comes together. The dialogue between Darrow and Cassius after his capture is only upstaged by the last talk between Daroow and Roque. I was all torn up over it. If they had only communicated better things never would have reached that point. No spoilers, but if you liked Sefi and the Obsidians, there's much more of it in the sequel trilogy. I went into Iron Gold expecting it to feel like a lesser version of the original trilogy and I loved it. It completely blew me away. So much more of the outer planets/moons. Can't wait to hear your thoughts on it.

And I definitely don’t want to have to work to be badass, so it’s not fair they should either! Haha) but anyway, I thought red rising reminded me of Enders game / hunger games mixed for sure!!! Where as golden son was more like GoT in space... with less dynamic characters... still good... just not nearly as nuanced... but no book can compare to the nuance of those characters, plot, sub plots, plots within plots, storylines, unsaid storylines... etc. martins a genius. But about rand/Darrow... they’re definitely alike in their self struggle and sacrifice and the issue that strength and power can bring, especially for people so unknowing of the world and it’s true dangers and sacrifice... and boxes... 😒... but it’s good to know Darrow lives past the first trilogy... I usually hate my protagonist dying, valiantly and all, in the end... which is why, on another note, I cannot get past book one of the mistborn trilogy!!! There are a few good YA series, especially those in post apocalyptic settings.

      @@ChristmasLore yes, don't get me wrong: I love YA. I just find it funny that fans of Red Rising feel the need to argue that it isn't YA.

    So I just finished Morning Star this morning. In my opinion it was the best of the series. Unpopular opinion I thought Golden Son was the worst and just forgettable...except for when he went back home.
    That said this last book made me love the whole series. I feel like if I had understood the characters as well as I do now while reading Golden Son it might have been better.
    One little thing bugged me throughout. Except for the sovereign and some side characters everyone involved was in Darrow’s institute class. As if there weren’t any before or after it. Maybe it is the first person focus but just seemed a little unbelievable that no other classes were mentioned or got involved or had important people like his class’s group...nit picky I know...
    Overall glad I read them. Not sure if I will continue with the other books but these 3 made a great story. Very happy with the ending!

    Stuff like directly quoting goodwill hunting, ESPECIALLY the fucking “Bye, Felicia” really really made me cringe to the point of near-nauseau. The book and series feels very very if it’s time and not in a great way. That’s said I loved parts of this book, most of the time excellent Golden Son and a good amount of the first book. It’s still a very hit or miss and at times corny read.
