Very funny that Gene had to throw out a reference to “Cop and a Half” during the “Broken Arrow” review. It still remains a head scratcher that Roger liked it. 😳
I love your channel and thank you for uploading these older Siskel &Ebert episodes. You have inspired me to do a video on my love growing up with these enigmatic reviewers on my channel
This episode is notable for two things: 1. Gene gave a moderate thumbs up to Broken Arrow but then changed it to thumbs down after hearing Roger's criticisms, though Gene tried to coaxed Roger into doing the same with Cop And A Half. (''Look in the camera and say, I was wrong about Cop And A Half it wasn't a very good movie, Burt Reynolds.'') 2. He then admitted he walked out on Black Sheep (I think 20 minutes before the film was finished) because he could no longer tolerate Chris Farley, he also walked out on The Million Dollar Duck, Maniac and Otley.
The Broken Arrow review was obviously edited down. Ebert had to have given a laundry list of what he didn't like about the movie. I'm sure there was more said before Siskel changed his mind. This episode is legendary.
these films were all ok for me i have nothing really to say. great little memoriam tribute to Gene Kelly though, and its true, to this day i sometimes watch that dance scene from Singin In The Rain when ive had a frustrating day. it completely captures the giddiness and joy of new love and Gene is completely connivingly glowing during it.
Roger and I were the only critics who liked Cop and a Half. Though I haven't seen it since I was 10, I still have fond memories. What kid wouldnt want to use the power of Law Enforcement to push around his school principal?
A classic episode! They are wrong about Broken Arrow, of course, but that's neither here nor there. Beautiful Girls was also a great film in case you were wondering.
Just because it's a "silly and dumb movie" doesn't justify it being passable. There are good dumb comedies and bad ones. Black Sheep wasn't a good one.
As much as I like these guys I disagree with them a lot, . . Black sheep as well as Tommy boy we're both hilarious movies. . And I think Black sheep was my favorite of the 2 .
Black Sheep a goofball comedy which i hate its not Kingpin at all it sucks really do when you hurt people in movies to get a laugh you just never heard a real joke or watch stand up
I didn’t love Broken Arrow; Travolta is a pretty lousy actor. Black Sheep is BAD, BAD, BAD.🤮 I am in the minority who agrees with Siskel that Chris Farley was not funny.
There's no need for gene to pretend he has to go to the bathroom just to ditch a movie. Who in gods name cares if you walk out of the theater during the movie? smh Black sheep was an awesome funny movie!
I too love BLACK SHEEP, but as far as people noticing gene walking out...at the time dude was one half of the biggest movie critics in the world, people will notice.
I am not a big Chris Farley fan, but Gene Siskel's comments about Chris Farley in this episode were unprofessional and beyond the pale. Aside from that: I would love to know how many accolades while acting on Second City that Siskel accumulated (zilch, none of course).
He's supposed to tell the truth. He did. Chris farley couldn't act and he was painfully unfunny. You arent owed someone lying to you just so you can feel better about the things you like. Go to church if you need to be coddled. and "how many awards did HE win?" is the argument of a 7 year old What a mook 😆
Gene never let that Cop and a half thumbs up go. ;)

I don't think Gene ever truly got over Roger liking that film.
@@jainee4507 I agree with you 100%. 😊
@@jainee4507 would you? That film is unwatchable
Roger liked a ton of crap.

Beautiful girls- great film. Awesome score and soundtrack too.

"Tommyboy" is one of my favorite comedies of all time. "Black Sheep" was utter garbage.
Siskel and Ebert would love the DEFINITIVE Black Sheep(2006)! That movie is awesome!👍🤘
Well…… I’ve officially watched every single video on CZcams
Face Off is much better, but I do still love Broken Arrow. I also like how it has the same theme as Scream 2.
what annoyed me about black sheep was the music that played every time chris farley got in trouble
The infamous thumb twist episode.

"Million Dollar Duck" was actually released in 1971 not 1969 as Gene Siskel implied.
A classic episode! They are wrong about Broken Arrow, of course, but that's neither here nor there. Beautiful Girls was also a great film in case you were wondering.
BEAUTIFUL GIRLS is a great movie!
Black Sheep is at: 4:30.
I have to completely disagree with them regarding Black Sheep. It's a silly small comedy, and it makes me laugh a lot.
Agreed it’s a guilty pleasure for me.
Just because it's a "silly and dumb movie" doesn't justify it being passable. There are good dumb comedies and bad ones. Black Sheep wasn't a good one.
In that category, Tommy Boy was better.

Chris Farley became very depressed after this episode.
I wonder how did S&E react to Chris Farley's passing in 1997...
I think Roger was tryna defend Farley tho.
I loved Beautiful Girls but never like the Hutton Portman story. Very cringey
I still love Beautiful Girls. It's a good movie. Man...seeing them talking about Natalie Portman. Whew! They knew!
They nailed her dead to rights. Good to know she's gone on to be as good as they hyped

Pretty harsh on Chris Farley. Don’t agree with their takes.
I liked Samantha Mathis whatever happened to her?
19:11 - 'Broken Arrow': 👎👎, 'Black Sheep': 👎👎, 'Beautiful Girls': 👍👍, 'A Midwinter's Tale': 👍👍, 'Antonia's Line': 👍👍
Black Sheep was just a less funny Tommy Boy
i didnt like that movie at all. i think its funny when ebert says things like two very big thumbs way down or the infamous two WALLOPING thumbs down
I love black sheep because it’s Farley and Spade… but I can acknowledge that it’s not a very “good movie”
Black Sheep is trying to be Tommy Boy part 2, not Citizen Kane
I didn’t love Broken Arrow; Travolta is a pretty lousy actor.
Black Sheep is BAD, BAD, BAD.🤮 I am in the minority who agrees with Siskel that Chris Farley was not funny.
None of John Woo's Hollywood movies were as good as his Hong Kong work and Travolta's career was starting to go down.
I don't agree. John is a fine actor and leading man.
He was great in Blow Out.
i like black sheep more than tommy boy
Farley and Spade were as funny as a hysterectomy.
Ha Ha, Black Sheep 'bad', and Cop and a Half 'Good'.
There's no need for gene to pretend he has to go to the bathroom just to ditch a movie.
