The fact that Siskel thought he could get Roger Ebert to change his mind on “Cop and a Half” only for Ebert to absolutely refuse and stick to his original opinion of what almost everyone else thinks of as a crap movie as still being a good movie, also makes it legendary.

I never thought I'd see this episode again. Of course what made it memorable for me was when Siskel changed his mind right in front of us.

This episode is notable for two things:
    1. Gene gave a moderate thumbs up to Broken Arrow but then changed it to thumbs down after hearing Roger's criticisms, though Gene tried to coaxed Roger into doing the same with Cop And A Half. (''Look in the camera and say, I was wrong about Cop And A Half it wasn't a very good movie, Burt Reynolds.'')
    2. He then admitted he walked out on Black Sheep (I think 20 minutes before the film was finished) because he could no longer tolerate Chris Farley, he also walked out on The Million Dollar Duck, Maniac and Otley.

I remember watching this episode and right after the Broken Arrow segment I just had to call my friend Eric (who was also a huge S&E fan) to see if he saw what I saw. He did. Probably the best moment in Siskel & Ebert history. You can actually see, in Gene's eyes, the very second he decides to admit that Roger was right. He almost stopped himself. I still can't believe, though, that Gene thought Roger would change his opinion on Cop & 1/2. Even, I knew that Roger had too much integrity to do that.

Roger should've at least mentioned to Gene about Cop and a Half that he did remove it from his Video Companion that year.

Gene did walk out on a few other films during his TV critics' history, but they weren't films he was reviewing as part of their main slate on a given show. He walked out on 1980's slasher film MANIAC and said he did so in the show's Dogs of the Week section. And he mentioned a few other films he'd left theatres for, all of them fellow Dogs of the Week.

it's fun to see them fight, like Cop and a Half, but it's almost more enjoyable to see them when they both agree on something that is awful.

not particularly remember any of the films that week much, Broken Arrow and Black Sheep are the only two i remember at all and i dont really remember them even though i remember Tommy Boy well enough.
nice little tribute to Gene Kelly. i am not expert on musicals so i dont know if "Singin In The Rain" is the best of all time but its certainly the one i can most rewatch. and yes that famous dance scene where he sings the title song is classic, i sometimes watch that scene just to cheer myself up some. it genuinely captures the joyous exuberance and glee of falling head over heels for someone, grinning ear to ear and beaming without a care in the world. wonderful film, and a classic icon of golden era Hollywood.

I was lucky enough to be included in one of those studio test screenings for Beautiful Girls. Back then, my friend Eric & I were privy to a few Miramax test screenings. I actually sat directly in front of Harvey Weinstein during The Pallbearer. Anyway, Beautiful Girls was a great film written by Scott Rosenberg (one of the five best screenwriters) and directed by the late Ted Demme (Blow). The test audience loved it and when the film was released, about six months later, they only cut two or three scenes out. Sadly, though, the film bombed at the box office. I dunno. Perhaps, it wasn't marketed correctly. I really enjoyed it. The Tim Hutton & Natalie Portman's scenes are wonderfully written. The performances are great, as is the soundtrack. Watch it if you missed it.
As for Broken Arrow, I liked that, too. No great shakes, but a decent John Woo action thriller and very faithful to Graham Yost's script. Graham also wrote Speed, Hard Rain and he was the head writer on the tv show Justified. Also, I actually liked John Travolta and Christian Slater in their roles.

"Cop and a Half" interestingly was a box office hit at $40 million world-wide. Against a $14 million production budget. Siskel keeps asking Ebert to change his positive review of the film. I never saw it and probably never will.
