    I might be a weirdo, but I would absolutely love it if companies just sold the heads and handles in a kit to be hung by the end user instead of ramming the heads on with a press only to have the end user go through a bunch of extra work to rehang the thing soon after. I can hang an axe much better than their mass production presses do, and I would appreciate being able to do it right from the start instead of having to go through the work of undoing their work first (which sometimes means having to buy another handle).

    Physics; In extreme cold or heat, natural materials expand and/or contract. As someone who's made their living for decades using tools, I'd never use an axe in that type of cold. I have each and every one of those axes.
    The only axes I've had come to me with bad handles right out the box have been Swedish Axes (Gransfors Bruks, Wetterlings) and that was in moderate conditions.
    I got the Forest Service Edition CT to use while I was waiting for a replacement of one of my Swedes which took months to receive and a lot of back & forth with the manufacturer (and the replacement also arrived with a bad handle & temper).
    I beat the Council Tool FSS like it owed me money. It got to the point where I was trying to force it to fail, like I was almost mad at it for being so good for only $29. In the end, I ended up falling in love with it and it's been with me for a dozen+ years. It's the workhorse. Original handle too. Still nice and straight.
    Of course, I don't go chopping into frozen wood on frozen days (the time to have firewood stocked is before the winter arrives), but I didn't baby them either. I put what's known as a "working edge" on them. I have no idea what grind they were or what degrees they were, I just honed them 90% of the time and sharpened them rarely, keeping them well oiled back at the shop.

    • @KevinsDisobedience
      @KevinsDisobedience  Před rokem

      Yeah, keen edges don’t like frozen wood. Just a test. No blame here. The handles are another matter, but wooden handles come loose. Just the nature of the material.

      @@KevinsDisobedience Well, that's a known entity. Metal, steel, rubber, etc..., they're all affected by heat & cold.
      That's why lumber companies don't operate in extreme winter. It wrecks havoc on everything (tools, machinery, men, etc...).
      Plus usually, at least on a competent homestead and/or campsite, all the firewood is processed before it's needed and saws are used to buck wood (not axes).

    Another informative video sir! I've noticed that several reputable companies overbuild the handles on their axes. I figured they did this to cut down the cost of production as well as idiotproof the final product for the customer. It also gives the consumer the chance to tune up the ax to their liking. I've seen in several videos where the Russian axes have thicker as well as shorter handles. Perhaps so they can take more abuse in the field? Maybe there is something to this reasoning in making handles thicker? Anyway, stay blessed and stay warm!

    Awesome video! All of my councils have come loose right away too. They’re all seated with a big ledge. I’d say it’s as much the handle’s fault as the axe eye. The Swedish axes generally have a much better fit because the eye has flared lugs/ears that seats the handle nicely. Though, I think Swedish axes are a bit too light for most people. I still think these are the best budget axes in the U.S., but I could see how a beginner would find a loose head an unattractive feature. I’d probably recommend a husky over council if you know you don’t have the tools to rehang the council right away. Then again, all production axes will need fixed at some point.

    I collect axes like most of your viewers no doubt do. I've swung a lot of boys axes, both new and vintage. There is alot of variance in cheek thickness and geometry in the Council Railsplitter boys axes. If you can find one that's fat with a very prominent high center line, that is my favorite boys axe. They are slightly heavier in the bit than the True Tempers are, but not as much as the hollow ground Craftsmans. The very slightly curved Council boys axe handles make perfect users when tuned up in my opinion.

    3. Straight grain, solid handle, 26.25" (+- .5" is acceptable for rough framing. A whole 1.75" off an axe is abysmal.) Fail
    4. 45 grain, half dark half light handle, minor surface cracks along the heart and new growth.
    5. 45 grain, axe head pulls to the left. ALOT.
    6. 90 grain, solid handle, no cracks. Actual 27".
