I have AT&T fiber as well, but have their router/modem (5268AC), instead of just modem. Do I need to disable the ATT router by going into the units settings somewhere? I assume competing routers would not make a good setup.
Also, I do not have any existing coax for backhaul you described. How much speed would I loose if I tried powerline adapters instead?
Really appreciate this series Steve. I’m fairly knowledgeable but it’s good to get a refresher.
Thanks Mike, i'm glad you like it. :)
Great video, definitely something that people purchasing these mesh routers need to know about. Lots of good info, thank you.
Great info & Tips as always Steve!👌🇬🇧
Thank Paul!
Hi, good info thanks. Question re my new Zyxel Multy M1 setup if I may. When I test the backhall which is wireless, I am told they are too close! Here in the UK our houses are not that big, and they are as far apart as I can put them. Will this cause problems, and if so what should I look for, and what solution would you suggest please?
I Love my Deco Setup:
I have 6 Total AC1200's: MicroCenter had 3 Packs on sale for $99 a few years back.
We finally have them scattered between the Main Level/ 2nd Level/ Basement
I have to get one just in the right spot in the closed off attic space in the garage to get thru the aluminum shielding for the insulation to the house.
that way I have range everywhere to even get to our Cheap-O Phillips Cue Walmart Knock-Offs everywhere
I really need an Upgrade though: I want to find something that will still let me utilize some of my Old Decos for those extra reach places
Something you missed! In the deco dashboard if you click on a particular node it will show which devices are used said node. To be able to switch automatically between nodes seemlessly ensure fast roaming is enabled in advance settings
Good call out Andrew. I did leave that out of this video because i didn't want it to be too TP-Link centric for viewers who don't have this brand of Wi-Fi. I believe i covered this in the dedicated review of the Deco XE75.
VERY Informative...So glad that I bought the TP Deco yesterday (purely coincidental) since it's the same brand/app you are using...Makes it easy for me to pause the video and follow the steps as you are doing them. I DO have one question tho...I already had a NetGear extender...it's about 7-8 years old I think :-)...I have it plugged in because peripheral devices (e.g. smart bulbs/plugs) have to go on the 2.4mhz...My router IS a dual band BUT, it does NOT display both in the wifi lists when adding a device (supposedly it separates them out tho, I dunno), whereas the extender does list both. SO, I wanted to make sure I was getting the bulbs/plugs on the 2.4...Will this TP link automatically do it? Can I ditch this extender now withOUT having to re-pair everything? I'd love to free up an AC outlet :-). Anyway, great informative video...thanks again!
Don’t forget to mention that while you might be getting a certain speed from your ISP, routers and mesh systems won’t send all the speed to one device. This means people should not expect to see 500 Mbps on their laptop if that is the speed they are getting from their ISP. They will probably in a best case scenario see 25-40%.
Hi Steve, great content. Quick question regarding the spread of devices in a mesh network. If I use backhaul to physically wire the devices together can I then spread them wider apart to provide coverage where I need it even though the coverage may not overlap.
If is not overlapping you will miss Wi-Fi in that areas but when go in WiFi place you will reconnect Wi-Fi cable should be cat5+ above
Hi Steve, yet again another great video using TP Link Mesh. Will you be showing more features about the including Network Optimization for better Wi-Fi Channels?
I'm working on a video that will talk about way to boost your WiFi signal and speed. WiFi channels will be part of that. :)
a 15 year old 54g router in a fairly large 2 story house seems to get pretty good coverage by itself in 2023. maybe if you get a lot of interference from neighbors would you need something like this and without a wired backhaul results may vary.
hi steve, i have a question, if i have a mesh point connected via wifi, can i connect for example a laptop via an internet cable to that point or does the point have to be connected via a cable to the router to do that?
Hey Fernando. Yes, you can plug a network cable in the Point and it will connect to the internet wirelessly.
My apt has (350m2) 3767 sq feet. Theres like 5-6 walls from living room to the last room, also some bathroom mirrors. Does 3x of Deco XE75 on backhaul wifi everything?
I think TP-Links claim is that each XE75 can cover 2,500 Sq. Ft. With the addition of backhaul it should cover everything.
In E01 you had your router next to your modem. What if the Modem is located in a corner of the house. Would then your router have to be located in the same location as your modem? You would then make sure your other 2 satellite nodes to be located across the house? Should you have the satellite node be located on different levels of your house? Lastly, the top floor of my house has a Wireless Access Port; does that count as another satellite node?
Can we spread out mesh nodes farther apart with a wired backhaul?
Yes
Would you put them between floors? I have 3 access points and want to put one on each of the 3 floors.
One on each floor is generally a good area if you're using wired backhaul but if you're using wireless backhaul you need to make sure you're putting the mesh nodes in a spot where they're getting a good signal that they can pass on.
You can get a reasonable idea if you switch on only the primary router and then stand in the spot where you would like the mesh node to be and run a speed test with your phone, if you get a good speed there, the mesh node will be fine but if you get poor speed, the mesh node won't get good signal to pass on.
An even better test is to put the mesh node where you want it and connect a laptop to the mesh node via ethernet cable and run a speed test, doing it this way forces the laptop to connect via the mesh node and can test the connection between nodes specifically.
Mech vs Access points. I’ll check the playlist if it has that info
I have tp link deco x60 and I had to back haul my system because I noticed they connect each other using 2.4ghz bandwidth making my network slower, after I hard wire the second and 3rd satellite I got full speed 😊
noticed that the services give you speeds "UP TO" XX. So they are always in compliance and can give you as little as they want.
Quite true, but i understand the vague claim. Everyone has a different setup, open space, windows, walls (stucco, brick, cement). I think there are too many variables to guarantee anything.
Nice fish tank.
Can you please show us how to upgrade or change our moderm routers without having to go around and reset / input all the passwords for every single device we already have connected? Thank you
All you do is when you set up the new router make the new SSID and password the same as the old one, the client devices won't know the difference and will connect automatically.
If using a mesh network put you isp’s router in modem mode to ensure you are only transmitting one Wi-Fi signal otherwise you will have connection issues.
