I have mesh wifi using TP Link deco S7 and I get great speeds now all over my home and garden. Very impressed and also extremely easy set up with never any drop zones.
great video Steve, I think this is a great topic people are frustrated with in the home. With all this new tech we need faster speeds in our home. love it
Thank you for this very clear beginners guide. This gives me options I did not know were available.
Glad it was helpful!
Just put in my first mesh system (erro 6 pro) base with two wired nodes and man what an improvement in coverage - being able to walk from room-to-room without changing connections is game changing. AND THE SPEED!
😊
Good explanation. I'll probably go with a mesh system next time I upgrade.
Baller review! You explained things really well and I appreciate the wifi 7 heads up
Thank you for breaking it down. Works with your existing modem , others lack to refer to that👍👍👍
Hi Steve, I installed a mesh network during the pandemic into my 2600 sq feet home. I set up three eero pro 6 around the house. It has improved tremendously but I still have one area that it seems to have trouble and it’s the farthest bedroom from the router.
Quite well done, and thanks so much. I will recommend to others, and look for further presentations from you.
Going with the mesh system, thanks!
Super helpful. Thank you so much!
Yes going to buy a mesh WiFi system. Now to figure out the best one for my network.
Great video, just what I needed, thanks
Thanks for the info!
Good info, thanx! 👍
Great video. thank you!
I have TP Link deco X60/AX5400 wifi 6 mesh system 3-pack installed recently in my house provided by the broadband provider.
I can easily move any 2 of it to any corner I like in my house to obtain the best signal, the main MESH must connected with the modem at fix point to send the wifi signal.
This MESH system much much much better compared to the old system which was only equipped with ONE FIX point to send signal. I am very satisfied with it !
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Helpful video thanks
Hi Steve, thanks for the video. Been using the Google Wi-Fi, 3 devices for the past 2 years, no issues with that. Looking to upgrade to a faster speed mesh, something like the Deco X20 or one of the other TP-Link Deco models. Thanks.
Great video! Is it tricky to place several extenders for the best coverage and speed? Can they interfere with each other if they are too close to each other?
I have the Netgear Orbi 960 (Black Edition) and it's the best Wireless setup I've ever owned.
Not a bad video but would be better if you explained that the backhaul exists no matter what you use. Wireless backhaul is the standard and uses either some of the available bandwidth or has its own said of radios for the backhaul. Cabled backhaul is the best option but not always possible. Wireless and cabled backhaul can exist in the same system its not a one or the other thing.
Thanks for a helpful video
Thank you!
great info thank you
Definitely getting a mesh system. Bot a new printer that keeps dropping wifi so I have a weak (not dead) spot that mesh would solve, hopefully. Thanks for you info.
Great videos - thanks for the content shared with everyone.
QUESTION - how important is a higher number MU-MIMO for newer WiFi 6e routers (like deco X75 pro mesh)?
Thanks.
It'd be nice to see real world information on how mesh work when both wired and non-wired. Lots of these videos cover and hyper the speed but its always wired. Lets see some practical info on non-wired speeds in these mesh systems. Thanks!

Like all your videos, this one is very informative. We inherited a complete cat6 wired home with Ruckus box and WACs on each floor, although they were installed about three years back. Don't know enough about them, but do you think a Wi-Fi-6 or 6E will give better performance when connecting to TVs in each room, multiple devices and security cameras? Was considering installing PoE cameras, but not sure if an ethernet wire from these would power them.
PoE requires an injector. Some networking switches have PoE ports. You can also purchase PoE injectors that are standalone units.
A cat6 wired home is extremely nice. Cat 6 cabling will support 10G speeds. That's 10 Gigabit per second. That'll be local traffic only, your internet speed is governed by your ISP and your modem.
To really take advantage of 10G cabling, you'd need multi gig capable hardware (networking switches / routers).
I have a Google Wifi Mesh system (2/5 GHz) in my 3200 sq foot home with 4 pucks at this point. Despite having the units spread relatively evenly from one end of the house to the other end, I find that the Wifi connectivity is marginal a the fourth unit. Still listed as GOOD signal , but this is while sitting just 3-4 feet from the unit. I've tried repositioning the remote units, but haven't seen any appreciable improvement in signal strength. Just 5-6 feet through the wall into the garage, the signal goes to weak, and 20 feet further by the garage door, it's nearly non-existent. I plan on adding one additional puck in the garage, but not sure that will improve things much. I've heard that Wifi 6(e) is really great and really fast compared to the 2/5 that I have. I've also heard that the signal strength through walls is worse with the 6(e) than with the 5. Is it worth shelling out nearly $400 for a three unit Google 6 Wifi, or should I just stick with my Wifi 5. I know TP link is supposedly much better, but the price is ourageous.
So I know this is obviously different because it’s a mesh system, but do this and Google Fiber have the same goal in mind when it comes to these products? Also, I’m just in a one bedroom apartment. I have a decent amount of products for one person and smart home products… is this worth me doing or probably not make a difference with it just being one person in a small apartment ? Thanks for the help!
I believe I already have a Google mesh system with 1 point, I would like to add another point to my existing setup.
I’m just gonna buy the cheaper google wifi 3 pack and hard wire them all throughout the house. I use Walmart Ethernet wire outdoors. So far it’s fine. Been through hot and cold weather for years now. You don’t really need to get the special outdoor Ethernet cables. My only problem is getting a good wifi signal for my front house ring cameras. I have them close to the street and the router signal doesn’t reach that far. I might have to just put a router outside someplace under the roof. Or would a wifi extender be best? Can router wifi signals go through window glass? Or is it still obstructing?
If you have ethernet cabling throughout the house, would a system with multiple access points be a better option?
On a different note. Just watched your plumeria seed pod video from 5 years ago. How did they turnout. I currently have seed pods
Im from the uk. I would like some advice please. I have a virgin isp and they provided me with a router. I have change the setting on the router to make it a modem then purchased a tp link archer ax10 for my router. I then have poe cctv and installed ethernet cables to each room. I have 2 switches under the stairs one is for the ethernet in the rooms the other has poe for the cctv. Would i be better off having one switch that does all of this together. My next question if i already have the archer router when i purchase a mesh system how would i set that up would one unit become another router or could all be satellites. Thanks Barry
Steve, I presently live in Trinidad. I don't think my local ISP supports WiFi 6 0r 6E tech or have plans to do it anytime soon. If I were to purchase a WiFi 6E compatable mesh network is it the only benefits I would really get from it now is the triband cabality where the traffic on the internal network can managed on the 3rd band freeing up my 2.5Ghz and 5G networks???
Hi Steve...invaluable info for us as we just started to look at buying a mesh system and have been completely overwhelmed. This video is amazing. We have most of the devices that you mention but how do we handle TV's hooked up to IPTV boxes? Will they need to have something hooked up at each TV, therefore, I need to buy a system with more hubs? Thanks,
I’m not familiar with a IPTV box. If it has WiFi built in then your can just connect that way.
@@SteveDOESDoes the Obri 6 systems backhaul automatically happen when you plug in an Ethernet cable to the satellites so that the signal is sent to satellite via wire and not wireless. Just trying to understand if this requires additional setup or if it’s automatic. Thanks
@@26-CJ Yes, it would be an automatic switch over. You shouldn't need to do anything else.
Do i have to connect the 1st mesh device right by my main SP router?
Or can i use my SP router in Ground floor and the other 3 on different 3 floors to have all 4 floors covered?
I currently have a separate network in my house where there is no internet access, since I only use it for private server access. Right now, I am using access point to re-broadcast the WiFi signal, is it possible to setup a mesh network that will replace the AP. Can you recommend any, or can you demonstrate one? Thanks.
is there any special things you have to do with an att modem to set up a mesh system
I have recently installed WIFI cameras in my house. My connection is sometimes spotty. Do you think a Mesh network would help with this, and will I have to reconnect everything in my house to the new network.
Thanks Steve...by the way, are you related to the guy who plays Rick on Magnum PI? :)
will any mesh work with any other system? Will google mesh work with cox router? or do you stick to 1 system?
I have the 2 Asus gaming router Ai mesh backhauled . I have 1gb of fiber speed. So I stream IPTV and my speed is 700 Mbps most of the time on wifi
i dont need it for home use. i need them for outdoors to connect many computers over a large area using a mesh system. its my life proyect. please let me know if such equiment have been created?
Any VLAN support for, say, separate IoT, from Guest, from main LAN?
I have a mesh wifi called Mercusys Halo S12... im not sure if i need to connect to the wifi router still or just connect to the mesh wifi?
So the main mesh router needs to be plugged into the modem?
Biggest boon of WiFi 7 will be the multi gig support at its core. I would expect competition to follow TP Link by offering multi gig ports on their mesh hardware units.
Dual 10G plus dual 2.5 ports is extremely nice. That's a big part of the price tag they're charging, for sure.
Went initially with the EERO B010001 with one gateway and one additional eero Pro plus 5 beacons. Never stable so switching to TP Link 6e with wired backhaul. EERO software isn't nearly as good as TP Link
Tried Zyxel's mesh solutions but ended up ditching it for cabled access points, mesh just doesn't work well unless you live in typical american homes with plaster and cardboard walls.
I doubt anyone will answer. But my gf parents have around 27 ish devices connected via Wifi to their ISP provided Router. I can't even get advertised speeds when standing right next to the Router. Would getting something like this increase speeds and reduce the network clutter?
If the band is 2.4GHz, it can be very congested. A mesh with a 5GHz band would be better. Wifi6 has 6GHz but it has weaker wall penetration and not a lot devices support it yet so a Wifi5 mesh is probably enough. ISP routers are also cheap so it might not be able to handle that many devices at once, with a single core CPU. More expensive meshes have quad core CPU. A good single mesh node, or a mesh system with one root node (connected to ISP router via cable, preferably cat6 cable so it's not limited to 100Mbps) and multiple wireless satellite nodes for the rooms, can handle a lot of clients. But you should check if those devices only support 2.4G wifi. If they're old they can't use the 5G band.
How does a mesh system work for hi res music streamed in the basement? I don’t have an Ethernet cable in the basement so I need a strong wifi signal .
A mesh system is no different - in terms of how well it can transmit data - than any wireless network.
The 5ghz band (wifi 5) has been transmitting 4k video for a while at this point (those fire / roku sticks are almost exclusively wifi 5, because 6 and 6e are very new). The newest Fire TV Cube is wifi 6e, but I'd have to check on the newest version(s) of the various sticks, they may or may not have upgraded to 6/6e yet.
Point is: If WiFi 5 can handle 4k video, it'll handle must just fine.
Signal strength is impacted by all manner of things, most of which are exactly what mesh systems were created to get around.
Hi, if i have 3 of the mesh unites connected on the ethernet cable, can i add a 4th that will use the wireless backhaul? or is this combination not possible?
Yes, you can do that.
Can I merge a Samsung mesh system with a Google mesh system?
I broke down last month and actually wired my house fully with wired ethernet to every computer, tv etc.. I now have full speed internet on all my devices. The only thing my wifi router does now is support our exterior security cameras. This will be fixed once we purchase wired in 4k cameras. It will also solve the battery problem with wired cameras! It was also solve the delay our cameras have because they are on wifi. The whole wifi repeater thing is problematic at best. Stop ✋️ the insanity and just wire your home with ehernet outlets ,it will make you smile 😃
ballpark amount to wire home
@@ROG956 it can be done yourself to save money. Hard to give an estimate when homes vary so much
@@ROG956 I purchased everything on Amazon . The wire ,outlets and the crimping tools and tester. I all cost less than $300 dollars. My home is 2300 square feet. I did it myself so there was no labor fees.oh also purchased a 54 inch long 3/4 bit installers flexible drill bit on Amazon as well for $30 dollars. Don't buy this at the big box stores as they want $60 to $80 dollars for the same thing. Also don't do a search for 54 inch drill bit as you'll get results back for drill bits in that are too expensive. Search for installers flexible drill bit. I don't know why they are cheaper as they appear to be the same thing. The one I ordered said the brand name was "hanshan" . What they sent me was a Milwaukee brand. Anyways yeah it doesn't cost that much if you do it yourself. I have a crawl space so it was easy for me. If you have an attic you can get in it won't be that hard. There are several videos on you tube on how to do it. Good luck!
Do you wire the connection into your phone, wifi devices like light bulbs or tablet? =)
@Leon Lam No. Your phone and smart lights only work thru WiFi. So you're still going to need a Wi-Fi router for those.
my wi-fi keeps cutting out will mesh wifi help?
Wow WiFi 7 already?!? I had no idea TP link even had the authority to announce that!? Haha
The WiFi standards are managed by IEEE and the WiFi 7 standard was finalized November 2022. TP Link just built hardware based on the standard and got out of the gate before competitors.
Asus announced a pair WiFi 7 routers at CES 2023. I would expect Asus - and others - to announce WiFi 7 mesh systems "soon"
I had a deco system but i found you couldn't change the channels and max speed was 60mb. Very disappointing.
TP link. 75 PRO IS THE BEST 👌. I can't see cable and internet companies coming out with twenty two gig speed at any time in the next few years. This should be enough for anybody for a good while until wifi eight comes out. By then maybe you can get fifty gig oh internet.
I already have a wireless router from ISP. Does it still make sense to buy a mesh system?
If you dead spots or the signal is really weak, a mesh system will help.
@@SteveDOES sorry one more question will that system work in basements? We have a finished basement where my son plays video games and the signal is not strong enough at times.
@@christopherramirez214 Yes, it should but walls and large furniture can affect the signal strength. If you're able to use the backhaul feature and plug the satellite into an ethernet port that will help a lot.
@@SteveDOES thank you
This doesn't really cover the fact that Mesh systems are typically slower than the equivalently priced standard routers.
Just piggy back. Take an old wifi router, disable it , and put a LONG cat five into it into. Then put the other end into the main router and VIOLA the wifi is extended
I have the same shirt😅😅😅😅😅
Can't I just plug in a cheap DHCP disabled wifi router and make it a "mesh"? It's much muuuuchhh cheaper. It's dumb to futureproof tech toy as those things gets cheaper with time and especially you don't have a device that is compatible? Why spend more now when you can get it for cheaper or free later??
Don’t recommend these at all. I bought a pack of 3 Deco X20s and they consistently failed to set up my network. Meanwhile my other router did just fine.
Yepie, where’s my money, I want to throw it away to support all chickens running away with my money .
What's that noise in the background? Irritating & distracting!
It so obvious that this guy is paid by TP Link. Not worth watching this channel as it's compromised by $.
