- Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we're discussing the Weasley twins - Fred and George. More specifically- we’re going to be discussing the differences between the pair, and what happened to George POST Deathly Hallows.
Fred and George are the 4th and 5th born children of Arthur and Molly Weasley- they were born in the year 1978 and it’s probably no surprise to anyone that they’re IDENTICAL twins. This means that they’re physically identical in nearly every way- however, the twins are extra similar in that they also share very similar personality traits. In fact, most of the time it’s hard to tell them apart. Given that they are so similar, today I want to explore how we can actually determine which is one which. Additionally, I wanted to take a look at their individual contributions to the series to see if one twin is more significant than the other (from the perspective of the story only).
First things first: one has to be older, right? Well yeah, it turns out that when they were born on April 1 1978- Fred popped out first. So he must be the OLDER, wiser brother- right? Tragically, Fred was also the first of the brothers to die- suffering an untimely death during the Battle of Hogwarts. JK Rowling has revealed that Fred’s death was one of the hardest to write in- however, she did ALSO reveal that Fred was the chosen brother to die because he was ‘slightly more conspicuous’ suggesting that Fred plays a slightly large role in the books/films than George. Actually, it turns out that Fred is mentioned over 900 times in the books, while George is only mentioned around 700 times. The reason for this is not entirely clear, however it may be because Fred is the slightly more vocal brother-the one who is more likely to act and speak first.

I’m glad that you covered this. Just because Fred and George are twins doesn’t mean they don’t have their own personalities/traits. They fed off of each other but were also quite different in their own ways.

I would bet that to their family and closest friends they were easy to distinguish. I have twin friends who are now young men in college, but I have known them since they were born, taught them in Sunday school at every age, and got them hooked on the Dresden Files books. They are very different to me, and easy to tell apart. It’s nice that JKR treated them like real people with differences.
My son is reading book 5 now, and just got to the triumphant exit from Hogwarts. He probably can tell something bad is coming because I have trouble hiding my feelings from him as we talk about my favorite characters who are now his, Fred and George.
My late father, he died of pancreatic cancer in 2015, was the "lead singer " of a set of identical twins. My uncle has described as it as losing a part of one's self, quite literally. Identical twins share everything, literally everything, and to have one die....it seems to be against nature itself. My uncle, like George Weasley, has had to go on. It truly is getting used to a new normal, albeit an incomplete one.

I've a cousin who married one of a pair of identical twins. He died from cancer only a few years ago. It was very devastating for his brother.
George in the books is the more subtle, docile twin but more active in Quidditch. I love their small differences. I also love how their mum can't tell them apart sometimes but Ron always can.
Fred and George were born on April Fools, that makes sense because they always pull pranks and jokes. It's not like every person born on April 1 has to do that but sometimes it kinda makes sense

I think Fred should have appeared as a ghost in the books, jump scaring everybody even better and doing mischief. They could have run the store together. It would have been a lot of fun. 😊

Sadly, becoming a ghost in the Wizarding World is a fate "worse than death", because they can't feel any physical pleasure, only have limited interactions with the physical world, and if you have "unfinished business", you cannot "move on" even after you finished conducting said business. That's why a lot of wizards prefer to move on after death.

One of my best friends who adopted me as her little brother took in two cats and apply named them Fred and George. She loved Harry Potter, I was resistant at the time but eventually came around. I miss you big sis, you were right - HP is good.
This is a beautiful analysis of the two and spot on. Yes, Fred seems to have been the “Mischievous in Chief” here, but of course, George was always a willing accomplice.
Going into the final book, I'd have thought that if you had to have a Weasley die, it would be Percy. Even with this explanation, I'd still be confused about the brothers. It's good to know that George and Angelina could at least find comfort in each other's company, even though they'd both grieve for a long time.

It’s great how the differences between the twins are actually kinda built into their names. Fred is Firstborn, but also their names are in alphabetical order to reflect their birth order. Fred had a shorter name and a shorter life. George had a longer name, and talked at greater length. Even when it comes to quidditch, George’s longer name can be used to remember that he involved himself more in the game.
I read somewhere that after Fred's death George was not able to conjure a patronus at all no matter how hard he tried.
Because all his happy memories he shared with Fred and thinking of him made him sad ..

I've always thought their personality differences were super apparent in the books, but that could be because I've had several twins as friends growing up.
And I've always thought Hermoine should have ended up with George. She was always so impressed with their magic skills and George was super thoughtful and could easily see others' needs
I think Fred is listed more bc even when say their names it’s ALWAYS “Fred and George” in that order (I have identical twin cousins Alec and Erik and I feel like Alec is always said more bc their names are always in that order) 🤷🏻♀️

I once was friends with identical twins, a lot of people would ask me how I can tell the difference between them and to be honest... I never did know the difference I just had a feeling I knew who was who and I was right all the time 😅

I have an identical twin sister, and if she died I dont know how I would go on.....I always feel sad in this part of the movie when the twin dies its so sad and hard for me to watch. But I am glad to hear the remaining twin is doing good :)

I can only imagine that the actors who played the twins had a real hard time shooting some of the scenes in the final movie, especially the one where Fred dies. If there wasn't crying on set that day I would be surprised.
I have a way of telling them apart, its just what u said actually, i like to say that george is the more "warm" twin-
In terms of getting with his brothers Ex I kinda like thinking its because of the Traits unique to Fred that made their relationship fail , making them decide to break up , where George's Unique traits and their mutual close bond with and loss of Fred made them the more compatible Match and ultimately allowed the relationship to take root and bare fruit.
Aswell as keeping Fred's memory alive ^^
Yeah i always love that when fred says remember george always opening sentence was from fred.i wish rowling should not had killed fred in the end coz it was tregedy beyond bearance if i had a twin who died like fred i definately would had killed myself too what kind of life u can have when your soulmate is gone

Also, (I think) Fred usually appears screen left, and George screen right when the two are involved together in scenes. Am I right? I still can't keep the brothers Phelps straight, however. Odd...

No they said they didn’t because they didn’t mess around at the expense of production and didn’t want to be responsible for the filming process being messed up and delayed because it’s stressful as it is. But they did play a couple of small pranks
What about the differences between the Phelps twins? Can you interview them and do a video on this topic with them?
Not to mention it’s always Fred then George on screen from left to right except for the last time we saw them speak before the battle of Hogwarts :)

I’m seriously considering having Fred survive in my fanfic where Dudley Dursley is a wizard, he ends up being a much better person, probably ends up idolizing Mad Eye.
My wife's mother was an identical twin. She told me that her mother wasn't the same at all after she lost her aunt in a very tragic way, to the extent that she (the wife) had to take on the role of parent at 13, while her mother essentially took on the life of a wild, rebellious teenager. She also had to be prescribed Paxil for depression and suicidal tendencies. Her mother would also go on drinking binges sometimes - she recalls the time her mother and her pet chicken got drunk on New Years'. After around 30 years after the death of her twin, she started acting more like an adult and taking up responsible endeavors. She died a few years ago and never stopped missing her twin.

I knew the physical differences and the personality differences (the pranks part) but I think I got Fred and George exactly mismatched. Fred was the one with the longer rounder face and George was the one with the shorter and slightly more squarish face.
I know in MANY fanfictions George Weasley has a mole and Fred does not whether or not. It is just creative license or not is up to the reader it how in certain works of fanfiction one can tell the twins apart
