It's always better to find the best ways to explore a country by going through credible sources , or you will end up facing trouble. In Sri Lanka, you should always ride in a metered taxi tuk where the device is fixed on top of the hood that will work on the actual charges for your ride.Request the driver to on the meter to be sure. Also take note of the license number plate of the tuk which you had a bad experience, so that you could lodge a complaint to the nearest police station. When you are a foreigner, the police will take immediate action based on the critical status of the case. However, Sri Lanka, as a country, has plenty to offer from lovely beaches, up country chilling weather with scenic tea landscapes, historic buildings, breath taking waterfalls, wildlife nature, luxury hotels, authentic food and culture etc. Enjoy your trip.
