Saw Jeff and his band at a small coffee house, just weeks after Grace came out. Maybe 100 people. 25 years later I still can't find the words to adequately describe the musical experience we all had that night.

Saw him play live at NYC's Irving Plaza in 1994. I was standing in the wings and was completely blown away by his talent and intensity. Great choice for a Wings of Pegasus analysis! Thanks Fil! Jeff Buckley went to the same high school as I did (as did his dad Tim), Loara High School , in Anaheim, Ca....albeit he graduated six years after I did (1984). Gwen Stefani (graduated 1987) and Eric Stefani of No Doubt...and Eric also is an animator for the Simpsons Cartoon...were also graduates of Loara as well. Stacey Q (1976 grad-who had a top 10 hit with the Two of Hearts), Jim Fielder, the bassist for Blood Sweat and Tears...and also Eric Zamora and Brian Mashburn from Save Ferris also went to Loara. Sadly I never saw Jeff play live, though I was fortunate to see No Doubt early on in their career. The Stefani's lived two blocks away from me off of Crone Ave in Anaheim-but we hung out with different folks. Thanks for the video , Fil. The 80's were a neat time to be in SoCal for lovers of live music!!
The only person worth noting who went to my High School (probably about 45 to 50 years before I did admittedly) was Sir Reginald Mitchel, who invented the Spitfire plane, which helped win the second World War! Your list on the hand is rather impressive!

The first time I watched the video, I was actually hypnotized by Jeff Buckley's overall true artistry(as you aptly described)in his performance. I had to watch the video about 3 more times to let his vocal and technical abilities fully absorb in the musical journey. You brought up interesting information about how veteran musicians/singers like Bob Dylan, Jimmy Page and David Bowie spoke respectfully of Jeff's musicianship. Fil, I appreciate your hard work and dedication in creating these analysis videos. :)

Saw them both multiple times. Jeff, maybe 12. First time was at a memorial concert for Tim (who I had a teenage crush on). He blew me (and everyone) away and I went to see him play quite often. The perks of being a New Yorker. Yup I’m old. I just became a “senior citizen.”
This is such a mystical sound to me, the guitar skills, vocal and lyrical content just hypnotized me. Usually with blocked ones, I listen to the song first (as you suggest), but tonight I went backwards, so your analysis was already in my brain and deepened an already wonderfully deep performance. Tim and Jeff were locals to me, both gone too soon. What tragic losses.
weird.. i was watching this very same video the other day, thinking back to my youth... a friend of mine gave me the album "grace" in either 1996 or 1997.. so having just discovered him only to find out he died shortly thereafter.. such an amazing album. nicely done fil..

I can feel it comes from his soul. It pokes and prods and forces a confrontation with emotions I'd like to pretend I don't have. This is so complex. Each musician is doing his own thing, yet they are perfectly connected. They all arrive at the same destination, though in different ways. This is a deep dive.

Live in Chicago was a must watch whenever the gang came to spend the weekend. I never saw him live. His voice is sublime, his talent is amazing. If you look closely, you can see when Jeff throws his arms up in the air that he is actually looking up and (seemingly) giving his father (or the presenter) the middle finger when she mentions the similarities between his dad and him. I love this video so much. Would love to see more Buckley on your channel, Fil!
Not always easy to follow in the footsteps of famous parents yet Jeff Buckley did better then alright. sad that Jeff left this earth to soon. great to have these footages and recordings to look and listen back on.
Definitely. Far exceeded Tim's shadow. It's like Tim Buckley? Who's that? You mean Jeff? And I don't feel bad saying that since Tim was a shit dad to Jeff. He didn't give Jeff his gift like people love to say even now. If anything he took away from it by being an absent father. The only thing he gave Jeff was his eyes. And a few more physical features. Jeff didn't even use his name for many years.

And I appreciate your insights into the song and the performance. I was lucky enough to see and hear Jeff Buckley with his band at a small club here about a week before his album, Grace, was released. A friend of my then-partner had called from Toronto to Vancouver to let us know that this show was not to be missed, and he was right! We found ourselves in an audience of likely less than 100 people, and the performance was electric. The structure of the songs, the virtuosity and passion of the playing and singing, with such a fascinating blend of styles and elements - and Mr. Buckley's performance charisma - made it an arresting live experience. Grace is a classic album, and yet the live show added something intangible that made it even more special. It was tragic to lose this artist so early into his career.
@Paris Simons The Starfish Room gig was on 18 July 1994 (Grace was released on August 23rd). Do you recall ever seeing any MuchMusic interviews with Jeff from around that time. Terry David Mulligan and Jana Lynne White interviewed him in Toronto and Vancouver in 1994 (October and November). I'm not sure if any other MuchMusic, or other Canadian interviews, happened then. Dang. I saw him open for Julianna Hatfield in Cleveland at the Agora. After the concert, Julianna ducked into her bus while Jeff sat outside the door on the sidewalk and visited with everyone who cared. He was so cool. It was 1995.

The tribute concert for Tim Buckley was in my neighborhood and it was wonderful - I was a huge fan; saw him only twice (Central Park Shaeffer and upstairs at Max’s Kansas City). Jeff blew everyone away, sounding hauntingly like his dad. I went on to see him more than a dozen times. Both deaths were such tragedies.😿 By the way, the club (smallest club ever!) is pronounced Sheh-nay’s.

Every time that I listen to him, a shiver runs up my spine. I remember the first time that I heard this song. It gave me chills. Then I looked at the lyric sheet, and felt it again. Now whenever I hear Jeff’s music, my eyes tear just a little bit.
I remember when I first heard grace on the car radio in 94, I had to pull over and take it in it was so refreshing - and then call my sister and ask her if she heard it too !

Jeff's body was found washed up at the foot of Beale Street, Memphis known as the Home of the Blues and the origins of Rock 'N' Roll. Coincidental maybe but incredible non the less.
I’ve always been ambivalent about Buckley, ever since I first came across him at Glastonbury. Here, in this folk/rock fusion, the vocal gymnastics are used to great effect & showcase the tortured mood of the lyrics. Variations in tempo/rhythm all add to the drama. Jeff always was easy on the eye though.
My favorite of his is the Live from Chicago version (czcams.com/video/2YjbJTS5C_I/video.html), so reminiscent of Leonard Cohen’s live in London version, yet still unique. His guitar seems an extension of his person. Although I didn’t like the Grace vocals (perhaps the sterile setting), loved the band. Thanks, Fil, for pointing out his technical expertise.
Saw the vid. Really good. Rec'd to me over the years but never got knew much, sound wise,,,, He passed the day after my 40th BD (not happy when the cops get called on you, Pantera the deal). He was 30. Just a swim in the Miss.
I really like the song Last Goodbye. He was someone who had his own sound. He reminds me of Chris Whitley. They were a lot alike. They both could take your breath away.
Minor correction: Jeff’s birth name was Jeffrey Scott Buckley. His family always referred to him as “Scottie,” however. Coupled with the last name of his stepfather, as a child, Jeff was known as Scottie Moorhead. After meeting his biological father, and discovering his birth certificate, he reverted to his birth name. Also, Sin-e is pronounced: Shin-ay (think, Sinead O’Connor)

He does a better version of Hallelujah than KD Lang (although John Cale's original cover is still the best I've heard. Bon Jovi's may make you barf or want to jump in front of a bus). Call me crazy, but he reminds me of Peter Green here, although I have no idea what he was singing.
Well, you should write “in my opinion”. I heard his version of hallelujah and have no idea what the hell the big deal is. It’s not even good. KD Lang takes me there every single time she sings it. She actually has better performances that even the one that was reviewed on this channel.
Jeff inherited that voice from his daddy. Sadly most of Tim's work doesn't hold up today but for his time, he was brilliant. My favorite was Buzzin' Fly and it was a glory to see him in concert. I loved Jeff, too, but Jeff didn't have the vocal control Tim did. Sometimes he was painfully off. But he had a beautiful voice, and his music will hold up better. His version of Hallelujah has become the definitive version (sorry, Leonard Cohen). You might think that Jeff paved his own path but Tim before him did some wild and crazy weird things with his voice, some of which I find impossible to listen to. The similarities in their creativity is what binds them. But if he truly didn't want to be connected or compared to his father, why change his last name from Moorhead to Buckley when he started performing? I never bought that BS -- it paved the way for him. By the way, the music industry was excited about Jeff's debut -- because he was Tim's son and bore the Buckley last name. When he played at McCabe's in Santa Monica, his first in the L.A. area, there were plenty of walkouts in the audience of maybe 150. This was right before Grace was released. He was better received at small venues in the area after that, and he seemed to have it more together.

Yes he did a fab job on Hallelujah, it comes third in my book after Leonard Cohen and JD Lang. Once again we've lost a great talent far too long. The presenter is dead boring for sure. The band members look really pissed off just standing there while she rabbits on..

Do you recall ever seeing any MuchMusic interviews with Jeff from around that time. Terry David Mulligan and Jana Lynne White interviewed him in Toronto and Vancouver in 1994 (October and November). I'm not sure if any other MuchMusic, or other Canadian interviews, happened then. MuchMusic has a ton of unreleased footage of Jeff that I would love to get my hands on, including his professionally filmed Trinity Church gig in Toronto, coupled with a MuchMusic acoustic set/interview, and HMV Superstore promo from that day; not to mention a Citytv interview and live performance from the Ultrabar Soundroom in Toronto, circa February 1994.

Dang. I saw him open for Julianna Hatfield in Cleveland at the Agora. After the concert, Julianna ducked into her bus while Jeff sat outside the door on the sidewalk and visited with everyone who cared. He was so cool. It was 1995.

The tribute concert for Tim Buckley was in my neighborhood and it was wonderful - I was a huge fan; saw him only twice (Central Park Shaeffer and upstairs at Max’s Kansas City). Jeff blew everyone away, sounding hauntingly like his dad. I went on to see him more than a dozen times. Both deaths were such tragedies.😿 By the way, the club (smallest club ever!) is pronounced Sheh-nay’s.

Every time that I listen to him, a shiver runs up my spine. I remember the first time that I heard this song. It gave me chills. Then I looked at the lyric sheet, and felt it again. Now whenever I hear Jeff’s music, my eyes tear just a little bit.
I remember when I first heard grace on the car radio in 94, I had to pull over and take it in it was so refreshing - and then call my sister and ask her if she heard it too !

Jeff Buckley died by drowning. There are several foreshadowing references to drowning in his album "Grace". Quite eerie.

Jeff's body was found washed up at the foot of Beale Street, Memphis known as the Home of the Blues and the origins of Rock 'N' Roll. Coincidental maybe but incredible non the less.

I’ve always been ambivalent about Buckley, ever since I first came across him at Glastonbury. Here, in this folk/rock fusion, the vocal gymnastics are used to great effect & showcase the tortured mood of the lyrics. Variations in tempo/rhythm all add to the drama. Jeff always was easy on the eye though.
I love Jeff Buckley... I had the good luck to see him in concert and what a sad loss for us all...

My favorite of his is the Live from Chicago version (czcams.com/video/2YjbJTS5C_I/video.html), so reminiscent of Leonard Cohen’s live in London version, yet still unique. His guitar seems an extension of his person. Although I didn’t like the Grace vocals (perhaps the sterile setting), loved the band. Thanks, Fil, for pointing out his technical expertise.

Minor correction: Jeff’s birth name was Jeffrey Scott Buckley. His family always referred to him as “Scottie,” however. Coupled with the last name of his stepfather, as a child, Jeff was known as Scottie Moorhead. After meeting his biological father, and discovering his birth certificate, he reverted to his birth name.
Also, Sin-e is pronounced: Shin-ay (think, Sinead O’Connor)
I thought his father died when he was a toddler.
Tim Buckley died in 1975, when Jeff was nine. I am not sure when he decided to change his name, but Tim died before Jeff became an adult.

One of his high school yearbooks refers to him as Jeffrey S. He does a better version of Hallelujah than KD Lang (although John Cale's original cover is still the best I've heard. Bon Jovi's may make you barf or want to jump in front of a bus). Call me crazy, but he reminds me of Peter Green here, although I have no idea what he was singing.
Well, you should write “in my opinion”. I heard his version of hallelujah and have no idea what the hell the big deal is. It’s not even good. KD Lang takes me there every single time she sings it. She actually has better performances that even the one that was reviewed on this channel.

i wish more male artists explored their higher range because they can do it, very frustrating as a woman to have a much more limited range.
Not really a perfect comparison but he reminds of Michael Hedges a lot. To me anyway. Both died in tragic accidents way too young.
Jeff inherited that voice from his daddy. Sadly most of Tim's work doesn't hold up today but for his time, he was brilliant. My favorite was Buzzin' Fly and it was a glory to see him in concert. I loved Jeff, too, but Jeff didn't have the vocal control Tim did. Sometimes he was painfully off. But he had a beautiful voice, and his music will hold up better. His version of Hallelujah has become the definitive version (sorry, Leonard Cohen).
You might think that Jeff paved his own path but Tim before him did some wild and crazy weird things with his voice, some of which I find impossible to listen to. The similarities in their creativity is what binds them. But if he truly didn't want to be connected or compared to his father, why change his last name from Moorhead to Buckley when he started performing? I never bought that BS -- it paved the way for him.
By the way, the music industry was excited about Jeff's debut -- because he was Tim's son and bore the Buckley last name. When he played at McCabe's in Santa Monica, his first in the L.A. area, there were plenty of walkouts in the audience of maybe 150. This was right before Grace was released. He was better received at small venues in the area after that, and he seemed to have it more together.
