      Yes, when MTV actually had music. It was called MTV for an accurate reason--it was the acronym for Music Television. I don't think they even play music on this channel.

      @@Real_masontroyadams I infinitely agree with you because they don't even PLAY MUSIC on this channel; therefore calling it Music Television is both inaccurate and pointless. The last time I watched, the channel aired nothing but reality shows.

    Reading the comments, I'm used to the community being a bit less critical but forget how polarizing Pearl Jam can be. I love them. From that era where all songs seemed to have a pseudo rap leading into the chorus leading back to the pseudo rap style (looking at you korn and Faith No More), Pearl Jam was a band that rocked and could get you crowd surfing with one song then get quiet and introspective with the next. I also admire Eddie's collaborations with other artists like Crowded House and Temple of the Dog along with his solo work such as his beautiful soundtrack for Into the Wild. Haters are going to hate, I guess. I can only say that I've loved Eddie ever since he was being interviewed by an MTV VJ who laughed when Eddie said that music literally saved his life. Eddie looked at the idiot in dismay and replied, "No man, I mean it." I understood what he meant and I've been a fan ever since.

      @@christopherjohnson3520 Love Carlin. His view is truly missed. Bono's heart is in the right place. Some people see him as pretentious but, to paraphrase Bowie, rock IS pretentious. If good is being done then that's all that's needed. And there are some similarities between Bono and Eddie. Both worried their band mates by climbing staging during performances, both have long marriages despite the "glamour" of rock 'n' roll, and both work hard for those less fortunate. Both are good men.

As far as people not having an appreciation for the musicianship of grunge bands, my metal head buddies and I (pretty much all very good musicians), love PJ, AIC, MLB, Soundgarden. Maybe 'cause we're all musicians? Seeing Pearl Jam live, at Soldier's Field in Chicago the day after the last Grateful Dead concert, was an awesome experience. Eddie actually went off on the spoiled rich kids who complained about not having good sound in their private rooms. The band then launched into "This Is Not For You"! Epic! Thanks for this, Fil.

    Saw the 10 tour at Reunion Arena. Eddie pretty much rode around on Dennis Rodman's shoulders the whole concert. Took my sister because I wanted her to enjoy what I was into.
    After all that, still one the best concerts I ever went to. Pearl Jam is special.

    You're so right about how technically advanced they are. That's why they are my favorite "grunge" band. And Eddie Vedder's voice is so unique; sounding angry and vulnerable at the same time.

    An intense performance. I liked Jack Irons' musicality in PJ but Dave Abbruzzese was, in my opinion, the best of all their drummers (five, in total). He got sacked because he was into fame and that riled Eddie. Mike McCready is the lead guitarist, Stone is the rhythm guitarist wearing the Ramones t-shirt. Both awesome but maybe do a Mike McCready analysis some time because his solos are phenomenal? Apparently, if a guitar is worth owning, he has it! Stone and Jeff preceded Mother Love Bone with Green River. Green River featured Mark Arm and Steve Turner who went on to form Mudhoney. Great analysis 👌🏻👏🏻

    Fil, this was a great and informative analysis on this live performance by Pearl Jam--I remember watching it. Additionally, I enjoyed listening to your viewpoint--particularly from a musician--regarding the importance of band members' top level instrumental, vocal and lyrical abilites. You'd pointed out Eddie Vedder's use of breath control where he took a breath before "Life again." It was difficult for me to tell, but I wondered if he took a "catch breath." From your analysis videos, I'm both reminded of what I learned and learn more. Thanks, Fil!

    Thanks Fil, now my comment. That sentiment, that videos are detrimental to music is absolutely correct. Music is not a video, it is auditory, it engages a different place in the mind, a more open and wonderful space, not confined by a construct artificially imposed on an art form in order to make profit. Once it was recognized by profit seekers who have no care for the degradation of music, this system was placed in stone. Now days we find that this has resulted in packaged shite that is not really important, not really inspiring, not challenging the musical mind, it's all about image. This is a great presentation Fil, thank you for the great review and history!

    Must of been something in the water. Quite incredible that all this wonderful music was coming out of the Seattle area around the same time, Grunge as people may call it was a breath of fantastic talented fresh air.

    • @Pkilla80
      @Pkilla80 Před 4 lety

      PJ and Foo Fighters were grunge that survived. Musicians come from all over the world. I never bought into the whole Seattle Grunge thing. I mean Eddie was not from Seattle at all. I know people will say Nirvana but honestly I know every song they made and I don't think they would have stood the test of time. IMO the first two CDs of a band are usually the best bc they contain the artists entire life of emotions and passion. After that its year to year and how much does a band really grow year over year compared to the first 18 years of their lives contained in those first two CDs

    ~around 1:48 &1:49 and in between did the same and, then after you spoke brief analysis Fil, Mr. Eddie did it again 13:08 & 13:09~ wow, incredible how he flips without conscious effort to higher tune, head voice you called it brilliant and gifted. The whole rhythm vibe just fantastic and compelling, rasp is very deep expression, its ..., good!
    Good evening Fil , I am doing alright especially with one of many grunge bands this one , top of the league, major. ....Pearl Jam; Awesome, cheers, Fil.
    Flashback when the young upcoming Creed, in fact Scott Stapp looks and reminds me of Mr. Eddie V in the early to mid- 1990s.The persona the memorizing quality the attitude on stage the confidence which draws and sustains. I think in some ways Eddie influence the young eager musical thespian of song: Mr. Scott Stapp of Creed. Weird, but I get that feeling of Scott Creed moment bu,t its all dominance, Mr. Eddie and I enjoy this, the song the drama of it, the melody, the words, the guitars accented all and especially the audacious drum piercing thru.
