- This is a quick video on how to increase/decrease your RPM on the newer style OHV by Briggs-Stratton. There is a vertical metal tab behind the gas tank that has a spring attached to it. Moving the tab forward towards the front of the engine will increase the RPM's. Towards the rear, decrease the RPM's. You place your finger at the top of the tab and bend to the desired direction. Keep all feet, hands and fingers away from the blade when mower is running.

Excellent video. Adjusted mine in five minutes after watching this. Now i gotta wait for the grass to grow back...😅
Thank you so much! I bought a used mower from a guy and when I went to mow the RPMs were so low it couldnt cut anything without stalling. I thought I had a lemon but you helped me find the throttle adjustment behind the fuel tank. Stuck my finger in there, bent it forward and bam, now we got power. Thank you sir
Awesome. I do not want any excuses for not cutting the grass for the rest of the Season.!!
Buddy, I think you just solve my problem. I have an M230 craftsman and have been trying to figure out how to reduce the RPM. You must be the only one out of many videos that at least points you in the right direction here. Well done, sir thank you for your experience and knowledge.
I hope you were able to adjust the M230. Thanks for stopping by.
Yes, same here with a McCulloch M51-125 / B&S 450e
Thank you sir. Your video helped me fix my problem.
Resolvió mi problema, tengo una B&S 505, gracias señor
Great video. My lawn mower kept stalling when cutting thick grass areas. This fixed the problem. You used the wording "Move the tab" - you need to BEND the tab. Take care. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
May your days be marked with joy and contentment as you sip from the chalice of pleasures.
I was very frustrated with my mower not mulching the leaves well enough. Now I will turn them to dust.
Dude, I love you and like the channel. My 80 year old neighbor was talking / complaining that the mower I bought him was running slower. I pulled out my Fluke 88 and the RPM was in range. It seems I need to stretch the springs a little more. The sound of a 4 cycle engine sounds good to all but less that a 2 cycle which is twice the speed and power. Have a great day.
Thank you sir! After installing a much heavier cutting blade. I noticed it's been running a little slower. This has helped tremendously and is mulching leaves with ease!
Awesome video! Thank you. Got me running the mower again in 5 minutes. Wish I would have seen the video an hour earlier LOL
Good tips! I set it by sound too, it’s close enough.
Nice video, will be trying the slowing the mower due to my legs not keeping up with the mower 🚶♂Thank you for publishing this.
Just want to say thanks for making this video. I put a new carb, spark plug, and coil today and my mower was running full throttle and was loud. HaHa. Your video helped me out today.Thanks.
no problem.
The idle adjust worked perfectly. Thank you
Years ago I was working on a mower and grandson was watching, he seen me raise the RPMs and when he got home, he blowed up there mower
Thank you, just ordered a new carb for my tiller and the engine had low rpm. This will fix it.
Thank you so much for the info. It was super helpful and right. I even replaced the carburetor because I thought that was it and your video solved the problem.
I appreciate the kind words..Glad you are up and mowing again!
Fantastic video! You explained this very nicely & it was easy to follow your directions. Good stuff!
I appreciate the kind words. i was glad to do the video for you guys.
Just made my life a whole load easier! Full bag every time 👍👍👍
Awesome.
Didnt know Jack Nicholson posted lawnmower fix videos.
Excellent. Concise and on point explanation, thanks! Subscribed
Thank you - helped no end 👍
Its now too late to fire the mower up without causing some tears to fall from the neighbors. That's a pity because I know that they have been laughing at my Briggs and stratton yard machine about to throw a rod because of the extremely high reving. After cleaning out the plastic carb and getting the water out of the sub and tank it started doing this. I couldn't figure out where to set the rpms. I knew it had to be something simple. Everywhere I looked, and I looked awhile, it was all older style mowers and was not the answer. I was about to just give up on it and blast it with the BAR when I found your video. I mean it was to the point where the two of the neighborhood kids knocked on my door and wanted to know if they could mow it. Hey, good for them working a side hustle for some money but big man here had to say no I'm working on the mower and I'll get it. But I wasn't happening and it was embarrassing. It became the principality of the whole thing. But like I said your video was like a hand reaching down and pulling me from perdition! Hopefully it will work tomorrow and I can strut around like MIck Jagger once again. Thank you for taking the time to pass on the knowledge! You do great work Sir!
I was happy to help...now, go make the neighbors happy and cut that damn grass!!
Worked like a charm - easy pezy - just the information I was looking for - thanks for video!
Awesome.
Once the spring arm is identified it’s an easy deal. My new Toro works SO much better now - they tend to set them too slow. Thank you!!
does anyone else feel like Jack Nickolson is talking to us?
lmao....here's Johney!
My mower "sang" between a G and G# when I got it new from the factory (163cc model 100000). I measured with a guitar tuner. Now my machine is a couple of years old and it's down to between a G-flat and a G, so that's why I wanted to adjust the RPM back up.
Simple, thank you. Good explanation and video.
thanks for stopping.
Thank you very much!
You fix my problem thank you
Awesome information. That’s
Great video!
I appreciate you stopping by.
While doing this adjustment I was holding on to the deck of the mower. I wasn't paying attention and cut my hand off, so thanks for the new stump.
Common sense is not that common any more
Spot on sir thank you
no problem, go cut the grass!!!
Thank you 👍💯🇯🇲
Gracias por el video 👍
Thank you!
No problem.
Thank you
Thank YOU!!!!
No problem, thanks for coming out.
Thanks bro 😎
Any Time...
In future it might be best to blow all the debris away before starting to dismantle the machine so that the cr-p doesn't get inside the engine or carb. Then dismantle in a separate area away from all the dust that has been created. Try to keep it clean.
THANKS 👍 BROTHER
no problem..thanks for stopping by.
What is it about Briggs and Strattons has oil leaks on the carburetor side where is it come from
That mower need realy really a deep clean for sure! CLEAN MEEEEEE!!!!
Dear Sir,
I have B&S 550E 140cc.
During idle power, the rpm has a very big fluctuations. The setting of the lever unit just decreases/ increases this fluctuations. I setted the valves, replaced the filter etc., but the troubleshooting not solved my problem yet.
Appreciate your help.
If you have a surging issue, i would look at fuel quality and possible a blocked fuel jet. Remove the carburetor and clean and use new fuel in the tank.
Winner winner chicken dinner THANKS!!!
glad it worked..thanks for stopping.
When you say you push the "tab" forward to backward to slow the idle, are you loosening a screen at the base of the tab or literally bending the 3 inch piece of steel/metal in the direction you need. BTW mine is already bent towards the back but still idling way to high. Thoughts?
Push the top of the tab, do not loosen the bolt that holds it to the engine block. Check to make sure the linkage is not bent or the spring is damaged.
Ive got a troy built walk behind high weed mower. Is the govenor location the same. Mine runs way to slow
yes, if it is a newer machine.
cam shaft and gear that is engaged to turn the blade is also plastic, no?
Affirmative.
👍
Will this work for other engines that are OHV?
as long as they have the same none adjustable carburetor and the same metal bendable tab with governor spring attached,
Is this the same as adjusting the idle?
No idle adjustment on these carburetors. This is for the RPM adjustment
Off topic, but I'm having trouble getting my mower with this engine started. When I engage the lever before starting, I notice the throttle isn't opening above the carb. I'm kinda clueless with this stuff, but I'm assuming the carb is supposed to open when running right?
When you say engage the lever, do you mean the safety bail bar on the handle?
@@tommy-time5240 yes
@@Laptops1781 the throttle linkage is going to remain still until the engine is running. Pulling the bail bar back only releases the brake and kill wire on the flywheel. try squirting carb cleaner or staring fluid into the intake tube (bottom hole) when air filter is removed.
@@tommy-time5240 thanks for your help. Unfortunately it still won't start. I ordered a new carb and ignition coil. Hopefully that works
I did that and it still runs very fast???
make sure the linkage that is attached to the spring is not stuck
Just don’t overdo the RPMs folks 😊
Slower will last longer in a way
What going on if i move the tab back and it didn't adjust? Please somebody help me out 😅
be sure the linkage and spring are not binding. take the recoil cover off and lift up gas tank to get a better look.
@@tommy-time5240 I did all of that, it revs so high till it feels like it’s about to blow up
@@tonyjohnson5047 has the spring been changed? try pulling the spring towers the rear and see if it slows down.
@@tommy-time5240 it don’t do anything but revs high
@@tommy-time5240 and it only has one spring tower it’s a hyper tough lawn mower
