  • Colosseum - Story Of A Band, a Rockpalast documentary from 1998.
In 1968, Jon Hiseman founded the band Colosseum, an association of virtuoso instrumentalists with a closed, compact sound. The band's always innovative style diversity is shaped to a very special degree by the musical career of Jon Hiseman. With his great inventiveness and technical skills, Jon Hiseman is still one of the best drummers in the scene.

    Philip John „Jon“ Hiseman *21. June 1944; †12. Juni 2018
    "To Jon
I used to play guitar when I was young: A Sunburst Hagstrom with a big Hiwatt amp. Our house had a party room in the basement which used to be a shop. The record player was located in our living room with two big speakers in the downstairs party section. At least once a week I would play Lost Angeles from Colosseum LIVE at full volume, run to the party room, pick the "waiting" guitar and play my riffs along to the song. That was around 1972/1973; it kept on going like that for weeks.
Decades later, in October 1994, I was asked to direct the Colosseum concert in Cologne (E-Werk) for WDR TV and post-produced the recording later together with Jon. The show turned out to become the legendary reunion concert and it was my initial meeting with the heroes of my youth.
The 1994 collaboration also became the beginning of the production of the documentary “COLOSSEUM- Story Of A Band”. Jon was the key figure for making it possible. My mates Johannes, Angelo, Roberto and me spent weeks shooting the band on tour or in London. We met all the important people in and alongside Colosseum. We also filmed the final recording process of "Bread & Circuses" at Jon´s house. Thrilling moments that are printed in my mind.
The last time I met Jon and the band was two years ago. Unfortunately I missed the JCM show in April 2018 (Bonn). I hoped we could film JCM for Rockpalast at Burg Herzberg Festival. But now the story ends here with Jon´s passing.
I am really grateful that our lifelines have crossed. Not only was Jon a great drummer, but he also was a genuinely nice man with great education and a sense of language and humor. He was a control freak and a natural born (band-) leader. We lost a wonderful musician.
For me Colosseum will stay one of my beloved bands and songs like The Kettle, Theme, Lost Angeles or Valentyne Suite are personal hymns. Forever!
Peter Sommer, editor Rockpalast, Norderney, 12 June 2018"

This is the band that helped me decide to become a professional musician when I was graduating from highschool in 1967.

I met the band after a gig and said to Chris Farlowe "They could have at least got to you do Out of Time", his reply was "They would kill me" LOL.
Loved the band. RIP Jon and Dick

I traveled to the UK and bought an original vinyl copy of Valentyne Suite at a store in Brighton. It's music will forever remind me of beautiful England!

I was always drawn to Colosseum´s ambitious and honest musicianship. They had their unmistakable, special style and if I was in the right mood this was the music to listen to. Unfortunately three members died and one quit and I fear that the new line-up is not on level with the old one. But I wish them all the best I can as this type of bands is very precious.

Colosseum 1971 "Live" is a masterpiece of live recording, if you have the original vinyl, do not sell it! I won't, nor Valentyne Suite.

The Live scene from WDR are from the Reunion Concert 28.10.1994-E-Werk Cologne! I was there-in the front row! Amazing!!!!!
28.10.1994- E-Werk Cologne- Fantastic-with Autograph from Clem Clempson and an Interview with him asking for a guitarist for Deep Purple after Ritchie Blackmore 1975. In Januar 2020 I remember his answer- that differnt styels (he did some Sessions with Deep Purple in1975) didnt't mach! I dont't know, if Deep Purple ask him twice- at the same Time 1994 Purple Splits and looks for a new Man on the Guitare. I wish It was Clem Clempson- but DP take a Guitarist Player he is never in my mind-(whats his name?) Now- Clem Plays the better Strat- like Hendriks-Beck an so many others and in the Style of Blackmore. My question is - has Clem passed the chance with Deep Purple to earn money- or he is a musican with a true style? I dont like the 'sound' from Morse. Yes- I love Chris Farlow- Colosseum II > and my Highligh is - always 'Lost Angeles'
