  • I have wanted to untether from my desk for awhile and get outside to paint "plein air" style. The weather was beautiful, so I went and sat by the river to make this quick sketch using Procreate on my iPad.

    I really want to thank you, there are no mentors like you anymore, everyone is doing "tutorials" at great speed, because now everything is about money more than art or passion for teaching. I love the way he explains everything, like old school teachers. Thank you a thousand times.
    I'm already looking forward to purchasing my space for the course I saw on your website.

    Thank you for moving to full screen for the details. It was nice seeing the block in with the sights and sounds in the background, but it really helped to focus on the detail rendering when you went full screen. I enjoyed watching your process, a nice culmination of the teaching from your previous videos. I've been doing nature photography outdoors for years and just recently started painting outside (gouache) I recognize many of the birds in your background sounds, they sound the same as the ones we have here. It's such a peaceful, relaxing activity and the next best thing is watching a good video of someone else doing the same. Thanks for making this one, I'd love to see more of these :)

    This is such a valuable service you’re providing to beginner artists seeking some guidance. As someone else commented, the internet is saturated with edited sped-up tutorials that do nothing for the learning process, made by artists with little interest in imparting knowledge. Drives me crazy. Since I found your videos a few weeks ago I’ve done daily color studies with a renewed enthusiasm. I intend to subscribe to one of your courses on your site. Thanks for your dedication and focus on actual mentorship.

    Jeremy...Thank you so so much. I have learned more and understood more in this playlist about color and light than I did in everything else I was exposed to on such matters in my entire life. And this is no stretch by any means. What you did and showed here trough these episodes can easily be charged hundreds of dollars. Jet you not only did it for free but not once did I hear you say "Subscribe" or even "like"...This is easily my favourite You-Tube channel. Once again, thank you! God bless you man. You have earned yourself a lifetime follower!

    I did the same thing last week at a local wood. Naturally, it started raining so I had to finish it later, but until then it was a lovely experience!
    Seeing your process in real time is fascinating. It made me realise I spent too long on the sketch rather than just getting the big shapes in, and I used far too many layers. (The way you work mostly on one layer is both inspiring and intimidating!) My approach with the colours was quite haphazard as well.
    Essentially, what my process says about me is I lack confidence... I'm guessing the way to address that is to confront it head on and practice working through the ugly stage on one layer - prove to myself I can do it?
    Also, it looks like the harsh reflections are from your bare screen or glass screen protector; I use a paper type screen protector to reduce that. The one I have is called 'Bellemond smooth Kent paper' and imo it's a happy medium between the slippy glass and the rougher screen protectors such as PaperLike, both of which have major downsides. For me, the benefit of the texture, antiglare and scratch resistance outweighs the marginal reduction in image quality. (Unfortunately, that's an inherent characteristic of paper type screen protectors, but it's a lot more noticeable with the rougher textured ones.) I've had it a year now and it's held up really well, though it might've helped that I use a drawing glove.
    I just thought this was worth mentioning so people know it's an option!
    I hope you do more videos like this in future, the section where you explained what you look for in a scene was enlightening :)

    Thank you for all the time and effort it is to both make a plein air, and document the process and edit the video ! Love the time you took to find the right spot. When ever I feel a plein air piece doesnt work, I start to add drama in color contrast. add more reds specles into the foliage, more purples in shadows next to warm yellows etc. Color pencils over gouache is also a great trick to push everything when you get home indoors.

  • @renica2787

    This is so helpful! I know, every professional artist says "start drawing loose patterns" and something like that. But I never really followed that advice and jumped into details and it stressed me out. Now really seeing the process of you painting loosely and then getting into the details later, it helped me to understand how important that is.
    And I was very impressed that you painted the scenery "traditionally" on one single layer (not including the glow). As a beginner in digital art, I still struggle with the usage of the layers. I don't understand when to get a new layer and for what purpose. I see other artists and they are using that feature so smoothly, but it doesn't help me to understand. Still I try to use the layers somewhat in my way I feel comfortable with. But I think that I don't do it in the right way.
    Do you recommend as a beginner in digital art to draw from reference without any layers like you did in this video? To get used to all the brushes and the digital canvas?

    • @Hollie_Gold
      @Hollie_Gold Před rokem +2

      I’m a digital artist as well, and I would say I don’t think there are any specific rules around when to use new layers. For me it boils down to whether or not I may need to manipulate that element of the photo independently. So for instance, I do a lot of commissioned portraits and I will create a base layer of the skin tone, and do shadows as a separate layer, highlights as a separate layer, eyes on a separate layer, then the finer details of the eyes (the color variations in the iris) on another separate layer in case I want to brighten them or change the hue slightly later. I think it’s all about what you feel comfortable with. It’s just easier to go back and make small adjustments when the different elements are on their own layer. Not sure if this is helpful, but just my two cents!

    • @renica2787
      @renica2787 Před rokem

      Hi Hollie! Thank you for your reply! It's helpful to hear from different artists, from their different perspectives. Recently I'm using layers quite similar like you, and especially when I want to try some colors on my painting which I'm not really sure of. So I can delete them in case.
      I guess the way we use digital art programs depends on which art style we have.

  • @christianalvarezcrivellaro9185

    I am way out of touch w/ painting. I used to create traditional Oil paintings and this particular technique of minimal layering and letting the paint "blend" like oils makes me exited to get into Digital painting! I think the water in particular would have needed more time. Great result overall, but it was tricky to tell whether that was supposed to be water or mud. But this kind of light situation is definitely some of the trickiest stuff there is to capture, especially on a timer (not just in terms of you needing to get a ride, but also in terms of the light itself shifting over time as the earth doesn't stop turning)
