- Beauty is often seen as ethereal and something magical and undefined, but in this video I break down 7 ways that light can be used to more clearly define an image to be more appealing.

You're one of the few channels who ACTUALLY teach art and its concepts and not just baiting for views. Thanks for your vids.
Ok, I can do it waaay vetter:
"Hello guys today I'm going to show you how to make millions with art! Step 1: Install Photoshop..."
I got baited with the picture of Rebecca Ferguson.... then watched the whole video.
Yay! I'm so glad you liked this. I just aim to make the videos I wish other people were making, stuff with actual helpful content. I'm glad you found it helpful. Keep creating!!
@@LightingMentor cheers m8
so true
CZcams is full of so many individual tutorials about achieving ‘cinematic’ art - taking advantage of the buzzword instead of explaining the why behind it…
“Use shallow depth of feild because its *cinematic*”
“Use fog because it looks *cinematic*”
“Use a soft key light because its *cinematic*”
I have no doubt that, as a lot of us are self-taught, we may have gained a good intuition for these things but at the end of the day don’t know why it works.
This is easily one of the single greatest videos on the internet explaining the why behind each standard practice and its just brilliant. Its just what we needed. Thank you!!
because they don't know aswell, they are searching for the answers just like us. But this guy worked on ton of amazing stuff, he clearly knows and done more than any tutorial channel
Your 30min video is better than any lecture I attended in my entire 4 year bachelor's degree in visual communication - this is a real gift you are giving to people, thank you.
lmao why is this so true. he's a great teacher
I totally agree!!!!
Thanks for these comments I'll give his vids a good listen!
What I gleaned from this: aesthetic beauty is an orchestration of caricatured aspects of reality.
Beautifully put! ;) Seriously, with "caricatured" in that sentence, it makes for great food for thought...because it oscillates between over-hanced and essen-ciated. Neologisms for caricature as well. Thx!
easy on the eyes is really a good guideline. In music, theres an Indian classical tradition called "carnatic" which literally means pleasing to the ears. Loving your masterclasses
Please thank your friends and family for encouraging you to teach...! Not sure if you've been teaching for a long time, but if you haven't you're definitely very gifted. Thank you for sharing with us. Very inspiring, and fascinating...! The video was NOT too long, you need the time to explain or there's no point.
Every video of yours that I watch just makes me feel more and more lucky to have found you randomly on the yt recommendations. Your videos are actually unique on content and the value is gigantic, hope you have a wonderful year and thank you so much Jeremy
You don’t post videos that often, but they are definitely worth the wait. They are valuable in-depth studies into the visual language and how to understand and harness its power. Thank you!!!
This feels like hearing the secrets to the universe and makes me want to paint right now!! Thank you so much 💛
I work as a programmer and am in my first month of learning to draw--and I feel very, very lucky to be watching your videos because the broader, long-term understandings and concepts you impart are allowing me to alloy and temper the fundamentals I'm learning in ways I wish my own programming experience had been when I started out. I'll stay subscribed forever. Thanks Jeremy, you're a real hero.
I love your way of explaining things. It has a narrative feel to it. Also, I’m always up for hearing about industry secrets about what we think is happening in the movie screen is actually different from reality. Great info on how these concepts are applied on real lighting situations and productions!
Lighting is something that I struggle with a lot in my illustrations, so this video (and your whole channel really) are extremely helpful.
Can’t say enough about the gift your knowledge provides. I first came across your teaching in The Gnomon workshop and out of the many incredible industry professionals that I tuned in to, your instruction remains at the top of the list (and it’s a big list). Please continue to educate. You’re in a class of your own. I feel so increased by you. BIG fan!
well worth the 36+ minutes to watch this. Beneficial to watch over and over again too.
For me, I feel I know instinctively why a shot is beautiful, it is in the explaining to another where true understanding in lies.
What a great way to start my day.
Little note: 22:23 - Shotdeck
Thank you for your recommendation! I've been doing scene/landscape/mood studies lately and wanted to do color studies as well. Pinterest is of great help, but not enough for my ambitions, haha.
Thanks for the note!
I'm mainly into the photography world, but your videos are incredibly useful to me because you talk about artistic aspects of images that are universal. Many thanks. Cheers!
This was like a full master class put into 36 mins. I kept checking the time thinking it was longer than it was...In a good way. The sheer amount of knowledge and helping us learn "how to think/see" crammed into this video is incredible. Thank you for this and all you do. You are a true master and mentor and I am forever grateful for your expertise and willingness to share your wisdom!!
I don’t think I learned as much as I did on this channel on any other art channel in just a few days. Your are great at teaching. Thank you so much for all these great free courses. You are doing a great job.
The left gaizer looks like an angel coming up from it with the hugh wings faced away... 😊
I am a painter. I love your channel and your explanations. It has helped me in both painting and composition. Bravo!...and Thank you!
I loved this. I'm a painter and all (good) painters - especially those who paint in a realistic way - use all these tricks. Every example you gave from movies could have been given using examples from pictures painted by the great masters of the past. Wanna see great lighting tricks? Caravaggio and Rembrandt are good examples. But ALL great painters knew every trick in the book: shape, depth, contrast, palette, composition and so on. And of course the same happens in photography, illustration and all figurative arts.
Watched the entire video and learned so much! I thought I knew most things about lighting, but you've given me more to consider while creating my paintings.
Another "beautiful" post. Really appreciate your content. There is so much to learn, and you really cut to the chase and teach it in a way thats easy to digest. Thanks for the fantastic content. (will post it around!)
Good video, good pacing, no fluff, outstanding voice, tone and use of words.
So educational and easy on the ears :)
It's so crazy how all the art disciplines are interrelated. Also this shows humans all perceive beauty in a similar way and there are just some rules for beauty.
This is possibly the single most important package of information in my art education
Wow. There is so much insight mashed into this. No one is going to want to watch a film with me ever again because I'll forever be stopping it to look at it and then someone will ask me what the film was about and I'll be like 'I have no idea'. I feel like I've learned a tonne though I know I've only absorbed a little-- there will be replays and thank you so much for putting this together!
That's one of the best videos on cinematography i have ever seen
You are such a source of knowledge! And you definetly have a talent for explaining and teaching. And the best of all is the passion you show for what your are explaining. Amazing content!
Jeremy, I feel so lucky to get recommended to your channel, seriously you are the best CZcams channel I found ever. I feel so lucky to get this knowledge, thank you for making it accessible and free to those who want to learn. Whether it’s 30mins or 3 hours or 30 hours, I will listen to you and make notes on what you’re teaching. Thanks a lot and I appreciate you.
Invaluable resource your channel is, and one of the easiest to make sense of early in the morning.
you just made my art ten times better
Hey Jeremy!! :D I saw this video was just uploaded.. can't wait to watch it ASAP!! Just wanted to say happy new year and I'm wishing you the best with this channel
As a long time black-white photographer, I have finally understood why I love B/W photos from your video. Thank you.
I rarely ever write a comment down on CZcams but Wow I must thank you for this video. I truly needed this kind of lecture. I was struggling so much in understanding lighting and making a scene that has story, mood and depth for the last couple of years in my self taught art life... I am very thankful to have known you and your videos.
God... I love this channel. Thank you for, as always, amazing content.
Thank You! thank you! I´m a painter, but don´t like or don´t need the division between arts. This is "The Light Lesson" to understand how we see or how we percieve the whole world!!! Thanks!🙏🙌 from Argentina🤗
Interesting examples and I agree that this is the form of beauty in images that are supposed to be looked at for any time from a few seconds to half a minute or so, also to give room to contemplation inside the movie and not overwhelm visually. But I would also like a video about how all of these points change if you want to create images that are looked at for longer periods of time. Many of these movie shots really become quite boring and obvious when you look at them for a few minutes, and they are not really something you want to come back to.
And there's a difference between visuals that are eye-catching / compelling and those which we feel are beautiful.
This is a brilliant way to demonstrate these concepts, which look simple at first, but need a lot of sensibility to be achieved. Thank you!
I didn't realize how much understanding light affects design. The elements of design and shape has been harder for me to understand in an articulated way. TYSM for this !!!!!!
This is the single most comprehensive video on this subject I have ever seen. Thank you.
Best video I have ever watched. you gave me kick and I'm very excited to create art using these tips. Thank you so much.
I could listen to you all day. So much knowledge..
Your way of explaining things just clicks every time. Awesome video!
I want to thumbs up this video 1000 times.
Light creating form is beauty..have you ever walked down the street and saw a light that seemed timeless? Then music has been beautiful to me..light, sound, and form can be beautiful. When I was in art school I was told not to mention beauty. Probably people were afraid of standards of beauty..oh, no, I know beauty in my own way.
These are all easy to say wether they are good or bad, because it works in certain rules that make it cinematic looking. But there is a lot more work that are way harder to dicern whether it is good or bad (at least to me), works that are more abstract, that are more expressive. There are works that probably screw all of these rules that just fantastic looking.
Wonderful presentation and thank you, oh so very much! Love your channel, substantial, comprehensive yet accessibly explained content, a joy to learn from you! Thx again!
SO glad I found your work here…..Inspirational - Thank you for uploading.
Yet another A+Mazing lesson. Just wow. Thank you for your time making these!
The 'averaged' face of symmetry does not imply average or midway or even common...quite the opposite: it is very rare I think!
Thank you Light Ponderings. I am applying the lessons I learned in your channel directly into my next painting!
This is great, I've been hoping you would make a video on constructing beauty! I'd love to see how some videos on how to create beauty in imagined scenes without a reference. These rules are great, but I suspect that application of these rules alone does not universally lead to beauty. These seem like necessary but not sufficient conditions.
My current interest is related to 2D game art, so personally it would be interesting to see some stuff about "flat" beauty without 3D effects or emulation thereof. Even completely flat graphic design can be beautiful sometimes and I have no idea how the art witches do their magic.
I do a fair amount of flat art myself, and I've always thought beauty, or at least pleasing-ness, had everything to do with composition - line, color, shape, contrast, and harmony. But listening to this video sure makes me wonder what I'm missing, and I'd like to know, too!
Wonderful video. Thank you so much for taking the time to make and share.
Bravo! Thank you so much for this great explanation and all videos here on youtube!! Oksana
Mind blown and opened thank you❤
I'm glad you mentioned the color script for The Incredibles; I stumbled upon it a decade ago and it singlehandedly taught me how to do a color script. Absolute masterwork.
Just masterclass after masterclass after masterclass. Thank you so so much for sharing all of this incredibly invaluable information in such an easy-on-the-ears manner
Amazing Talk! Thank you for sharing you knowledge for free here! WOw!
When you were showing images and explaining where people naturally look, there were two that stood out to me. Both were situations where light was shining onto something from a doorway into a dark room. You said I would naturally look at the doorway, the brightest part of the image, but I found myself looking not at the greatest source of light, but rather the thing the light was shining on.
Wow, thanks, his morsels of information was very meaningful to me. Yes, we use that term,"Easy on the eyes."
Beautiful! great stuff. Loving the channel. I would add to the Palette, the importance of costume design (or rather costume colours in this instance) and set design. Both tremendously helping the D.O.P. to set the overall tone and the Colorist to bring it home.
Wow. I never comment on videos, but I really need to on every one of your videos. Every video has so much to teach, so much useful information, and you deliver it in such a clear, concise way. Thanks for making this as well as your other videos!
never have I been so fast to click on a yt notification, thank you for your videos! 💜
Love the deep dive. Thank you for this amazing video, for letting it be long and in-depth, and for the hard work it must have taken. These are absolute gems!
Since I've been a 3D artist, I always annoy my friends and family when we're watching movies. Because I rarely say anything about the film, but always talk about how different scenes are made. How cool the lighting is or how well a real footage to 3D scene trasition is made XD
you are making me love light and visdev stuff more and more
How wonderful it is for someone to share so much knowledge and experience in such a clear and simple way. Thank you very much.
Fascinating, tutorial on understanding lighting
This was pure gold !! The way you broke it down was not only easy to follow, but also inspiring .
A trick i figured out while watching this video:
Look at any picture, close your eyes, open them up for as little time as possible, then close. If you can understand what happens in the image in that split second your eyes are open, then the shot is done well.
thank you so much, Jeremy! this IS exciting stuff, you are always offering new ways to look at light :)
Wow, thank you for the thorough explanation! This is awesome, I will certainly be coming back to it soon. Seriously, your content is so helpful. I can see the excitement and passion in the way you act, it's so lovely.
Can’t wait for the next video!!!
This channel tought me to see, you are amazing man
love your channel! ❤
Insightful!
Thank you.👏❤️👍
Gold of a video! thank you !
Oh my gosh. I just found your channel and immediately subscribed. Your content is EXACTLY appropriate for film makers. Thank-you for your insights.
Extraordinarily helpful! I've never seen this taught this way
I love you and your channel so much. As someone aspiring to be a working artist in the entertainment industry, I appreciate your genuine and straightforward way of teaching and the kindness you exude. Thank you for all you do!!
It’s quite refreshing to see how excited you are about light and color! Really inspires me to want to learn more about how light and color work n apply it to my own art
Please make more videos like this. The length is perfect. I really enjoy listening to you because every word you say is so helpful in my creative journey.
Thank you for your amazing content. I learn new things every video and even subjects and concepts I knew before, are refreshed and makes even more sense in context. Love it.
My gosh, you are Absolutely Amazing! You are able to clearly and cleanly explain these concepts, and suddenly make these concepts that just bush against my mind jump up and scream!
Great job 👏
First video of yours that I happen to watch and it's been an amazing journey. Thank you for doing this.
Thank you for this incredible video. One of the most important I’ve seen on art creation. So glad I discovered this channel!
this channel is amazing, I'm glad I found it!
Great videos! I am learning so much. I have been a commercial artist and used some of the things you teach but then subconscious its good to see them pointed out and have many more things added.
fantastic video! having these subconscious things clearly laid out as concrete is so important for our creative work, its crazy how professionals use these for every project and people never ever notice. i just tried implementing backlighting and fog into one of my artworks and can't believe the difference something so subtle can make! thank you for this video ^^
It's pure gold❤
Truly a fantastic tutorial. Thank you Jeremy!
the information you share is true gold !!! thank you for your generosity.
Amazing explanations, thank you !
Thank you for this generous reflections! (and all your vids in fact). This is really high quality stuff (and thanks for going straight to the point with no cliches, intros, or catchfrases! 🙂). You really understand what you're talking about and that makes all the difference.
Many of the rules you state here reminds me -with different naming- of what Patrick O'Sullivan (the wandering dp) calls "The Framework" -upstage key, layered approach, to avoid flatness, etc-.
Thank you!
You’re such a great teacher, thank you!
Insanely interesting and perfectly understandably conveyed! Thanks!
My college art professor explained to me that there is art, and then there is art that has artistic merit. You can't fake it. You can't buy another person's ability to create artistic merit. You can only strive to achieve it. I think the points in this video are valid. They are great for people working on artistic merit is their artwork. It is found in works by artists like Van Gogh. Alphonse Mucha, Kandinsky, Willem De Kooning. The all have different styles and expression, but their works have one thing in common... artistic merit. Van Gogh was so gifted, I'm not sure he could even make a bad painting. Why does art by Toulouse Lautrec give you a thrill when you see it? Try holding your finger over one area or part of the composition, or even one little dot. Without that swash of paint or line or dot, the whole composition can fall apart. The composition as a whole is thrilling. The reflection on the dancer's face is thrilling. Why? Because it is the exact lighting needed to make it great, and he knew what that was.
This is excellent Jeremy. I really appreciate your lighting expertise - huge inspiration to me in my Colorist studies. I am a big Shot Deck fan for look reference as well :)
