    The whole question of justice in fallout always brings me back to the end of Boondock Saints. "Do not kill. Do not rape. Do not steal. These are principals which every man of every faith can embrace. These are not polite suggestions. They are codes of behavior and those of you that ignore them will pay the dearest cost."

    Half way through your video, once the quest was finished and you started talking about vampirism and cannibalism, when you mentioned about how the Family could've evolved a defense against the toxicity of the blood, it reminded of how modern humans became lactose tolerant. Originally humans couldn't drink milk beyond being a toddler. But about 10,000BC a mutation starting taking hold of the human race in which people could start drinking normal milk longer into their lives until eventually they could drink milk for their entire lives. That means today's lactose intolerant people are actually more closer to original humans than the lactose tolerance are. So I can drink milk so I could consider myself a mutant by Fallout's the Family mechanics of evolution.

    • @MaskedGEEK
      @MaskedGEEK Před 6 lety +17

      Lora Elstad When I posted my comment I was thinking how long it’d be before someone would say that. It was a Strong reference. Lol. But then again, if lactose tolerant people are mutants and suddenly start demanding the milk of human kindness, does that makes those people super mutants without the need for FEV? 🤔

    • @MaskedGEEK
      @MaskedGEEK Před 6 lety +4

      Lora Elstad Starting off with my juvenile side: Super Mutants forcing the milking process of us? Given their (lack of) intelligence, save for a small number of them, they’ll likely try to milk both men and women. Yeah somebody shoot me now. Oh and I just got a horrific vision of human milking farms now. Yeah, in the Fallout universe we humans are well and truly screwed.
      On serious note: if we’re talking about your average healthy human of today just suddenly going cold turkey cannibalism, later to vampirism, then yeah I can understand how improbable it is, especially being in Washington DC the Family would very likely be descendants of a civilized family from pre-war DC. However, I’d like to think of it like this: what if the gene for lead tolerance leading to allowing the continued drinking of blood was already present but, pre-war no one did that so the gene wasn’t active? People with the gene were nothing but carriers. Then, the bombs dropped, 200 years later and 3, maybe 4 generations later and the desperation of the survivors looking for food kickstarted the gene leading to some people being able to drink blood? After all, the Family is only a small group. There’s no definitive answer as to how many people in the Fallout universe have this gene/mutation but I’ll be willing to bet it’s not the entire USA, let alone the whole planet affected. I would think that situation is perfectly plausible.

      The funny thing is, that scientist believes that over 65% of the population is still lactose intolerant.So you can kind of tell the other 35% developed this ability because of nutritional necessity something they weren't getting from other foods or milk;(most everyone can drink goats milk because of the low lactose).You could argue that in the Wasteland the FEV and radiation have caused a mid-level mutation in some humans to help with processing toxins and like lactose tolerance, it affects less than a majority because they have managed to find various food items, which could still cause some other mutations.

    You forget about him saying he would become hungry and his sister would hold him until the hunger went away. So he was dealing with the hunger his whole life. I think the anger giving him seizures where he blacks out but I think he truly did kill them. And consider if your a cannibal you "know" to tell the guard that and he lets you in. Plus the family comes from all over the waiste's how did they gather? Maybe there is some connection they all share.

    • @Jason-de9mq
      @Jason-de9mq Před 2 lety +7

      He called it the hunger only after meeting the family. The seizures would be something his sister would recognize since she saw it the day of the attack. Since her first experience of seeing this in her brother was violence she would conclude that her brother is going to become violent again and would hold him to stop him from doing any harm.

      She cares about her brother, she was the person stopping him from going psycho during years, which also bring a point: Ian survived YEARS without human flesh/blood. It's not a need for survival, it's a mental or psylochical sikeness, and I think putting Ian out of the psycho con in the metro might prevent him from assuming its normal, that he can't fight the hunger, that he must eat.
      As for the family, I chose the killing opotion, but only after being sure that Ian was back in Areu, he hasn't embrace this sikeness, he can be saved, not the others. In fact if it is a contagious mental/physical sikeness, it's best to put an end to it, letting humans eat each other is not a good evolution path.

In the first video, The Family 1, at the 14:30 mark, there is a description of the injuries to the West family parents:
    "The bite marks on the neck appear to be from a human or humans with sharpened incisors or canines."
    This raises the question of, do these people file or sharpen their own teeth, and are otherwise human? Are these people born with teeth already sharper or shaped differently than a normal human? I find it odd that the description in the game would mention this on the injuries, yet no visual evidence or text/dialogue with anybody in The Family mentions any sort of teeth sharpening or even as a visual indicator of somebody being one of them. It may be nothing, but I found it rather interesting nonetheless.

    When I first played FO3 I didn’t understand how the game worked. I found Arefu before I found Megaton. I lived in the West’s house cuz it was the only place I knew of with a bed. Stored all my stuff in their closet for most of the game. When I finally found the family I made Arefu and the family allies, then went back and killed the family. I tried to go home to my / the West’s, shack but was super surprised when the people of Arefu tried to kill me. Had to move my 900 pounds of shit to a new house in several trips while avoiding getting shot. Oops.

    As someone who is involved with biochemistry and neurotransmitters I really liked that you included prion diseases in the ending argument against cannibalism. I can tell you did your homework so props to you. As someone who briefly studied prions I would just like to clarify a few things, mainly towards the end of my comment. Prions are diseased proteins that have, as you have said, misfolded into a more thermodynamically stable state, when something is in a stable state it usually prefers to stay that way. What is really interesting about prions is that the healthy form of the protein actually occurs naturally in our body, they are called prion precursor proteins. Our DNA is hard coded to make these precursor proteins, we know the gene that performs this function. It is also important to keep in mind that the precursor protein is SIGNIFICANTLY higher in concentration in the brain and cerebral spinal fluid(CSF). Here's how prions work in a nutshell: when a healthy form of the precursor protein comes into contact with a prion, the healthy precursor protein will be contorted into the diseased form. A big reason why they are deadly is that prions tend to aggregate and form small clusters, it is important to state that smaller oligomers of 6-8 prions have been found to have the highest neurotoxicity. This is because the smaller clusters are more easily able to squeeze themselves in between axon terminals (the space between neurotransmitter cells) and disrupt normal neuron cell functions; they are therefore considered to be more dangerous. So your body essentially provides the fuel for prions to keep on making prions from your healthy precursors until the patient dies from neurological complications. Well why not just cook the meat then? Unfortunately prions are resilient, stable, and can withstand conditions that usually cause normal proteins to denature, or lose their function(means cooking meat will not reliably destroy prions, these are tough mfkers). The cases of Kuru were bad in New Guinea because their form of funeral cannibalism included consuming brain material. Prions can get pretty serious pretty quickly if brain material is involved. A quick reminder that the precursor is SIGNIFICANTLY higher in the brain and CSF. This means this is where the prions will accumulate the most. So you can imagine the horrible positive feedback loop this produced not only from a bioaccumulation perspective but from a population perspective. You are right that Kuru was confined to New Guinea and was only found in humans BUT other animals are definitely not immune to prions and have transmitted them to humans. The first prion disease to be identified were scrapies found in goats in 1732. Other prion diseases include Mad Cow's disease in cows and subsequently Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD) in humans if they consume the diseased beef and have symptoms, presumably because they used recycled cow materials as cow feed which probably had brain material. From a scientist's point of view, thank you for doing your homework on the subject! I feel like you did it justice for a general audience.

    There's no way in hell that Ian wasn't the one to kill that one asshole trying to steal the Brahmin.
    With the Cannibalism perk, we see that they do share a strange connection with one another. It's also a wide variety of people, with greately differing temperments - one that even Vance, while admitting he has the aptitude to change peoples mindsets, could not have gotten without extrodinary skill in manipulation. Keep in mind - he has to keep them together.
    This in my mind, debunks the Seziure theory; plus that's just..not how that works. If it is a seziure, then it's a different form, one that cannot be related too strongely to a real world seziure.
    Another person brought up the hunger thing, something that Ian admits to having. It COULD be psychosis, as i also saw here, but the only real way to control that in the world of Fallout is by doing what they do.
    Vance is, also, a very open indiviual, and seems almost..relieved, in my eyes, that they can just drink blood from blood packs. It is possible that he slowly grew wanting more, a whole bodys worth; it could also be a simple supply and demand dillema.
    You also said yourself that the speech check to go and talk to him is really easy. Perhaps he wants to open up to people more? After all, he truly does believe this is something outside of there control.
    Of course, half of this is pretty strong, and half is me examining him from a theraputical side. I really wish we had more information, some things just do not add up. If he has dreams about it, im 99% certain he actually did eat his parents.
    Side note, the knocking on the door is actually a vampire thing. They cannot go into someones house without express permission from the owner in some fiction, so it's probably just Vance taking that and applying it in a benifical way - if he can get in then, well - easier feeding.
    But overall the best outcome is for everyone to work together, so on that, we agree.

    Your seizure theory isn't far off. I hit my head a lot as a kid and now I suffer from seizures. I don't know if those head injuries are linked to my seizures but it makes sense to me. No one in my family had seizures, migraines yes, but that's it. When I have a seizure it hurts and vision does get blurry and of course the convulsing doesn't help with that along with the pain that comes from the back of my neck down to my shoulders. When I come back it sucks and I feel so week and my heart rate is through the roof. But I can't fully remember everything afterwards. Almost like I had amnesia. So Ian having seizures isn't far off. But I like it how this isn't a full picture. We don't get all the information, because who ever would? Especially in a post-apocalyptic setting? I love how it's up to the player to believe and think what actually happened.

But, I would argue that the ritual cannibalism of the Oceanic tribes can't be condemned as morally wrong. Going by everything that is seen in this quest line there is the important point from your own observations, when examining the west family you notice that the bite mark is different.
    I believe the right option is to keep Ian with the family and have them defend Arefu.
    As he needs help for his mental condition - meditation, contemplation and guidance would help and also they understand that there is the chance that he could have a turn . after all what is the alternative? he is right about Lucy, she isn't that bothered about him - after all she forgets that he could be dead and doesn't bother trying to visit him. He would be left alone with a group of people that would have no clue as to what he is capable of.
    Also I believe that the ability to change is an important factor, unlike raiders who would just carry on killing, the family agree that there is a better way.
    This also works in the situation where there is no mutation, if its going to end up killing them it may as well be in a way that doesn't harm other people.

    A correction about prion diseases and kuru: first of all, prions can occur naturally in any one of us at any time for an unknown reason. People are not more likely to develop them because they are cannibals. You can only get it from eating if the thing you ate had them, and that goes for any creature that can have prions, be it a cow, deer, elk, or human. Deer have been found to have them in my county, which is why I don't really recommend people making venison products from local deer right now. (Wolves, btw, cannot contract prions diseases, which makes sense because their role in the ecosystem is picking off the sick and weak, and that would certainly include animals with prion diseases. They are nature's prion cleanup crew, and we've eliminated them from most of America and Europe because we had no idea they were that important.) Also, there's less risk, though never zero, if you do not eat any of the central nervous system. The whole reason it was a problem in Great Britain was that they were grinding up the unattractive bits, including the central nervous system, and feeding it to other cows, infecting them. So even if the risk wasn't high, assuming no part of the CNS was ground into meat, it was still too prevalent. And it's not just humans- I believe some cats also got it in that outbreak, because the lower-quality meat in their food was derived from many parts all ground up, including bits of the CNS. It is now believed that the Fore people (I've only ever heard it pronounced as foray, btw, although that could be wrong as it's not exactly a term I hear regularly since college and not all that frequently in college, because prion diseases weren't the focus of any of my classes.) originally contracted the prions from a certain species of fruit bats they considered a delicacy. The disease was then spread because of their practice of funerary cannibalism, where the brain was eaten by the women and children, infecting them. The risk of spreading prion diseases in a population through cannibalism is actually fairly low unless the right, or wrong, things all come into play. That said, a prey item that every single person involved in butchering, cooking, and eating it is susceptible to any contagious disease it happens to have is obviously not ideal. Human flesh is apparently very nutritious for humans, but the disease risk offsets that. Moreover, if you allow people to start to see other people as food, that can cause issues with people getting along peacefully. People may start to kill each other on pretexts just for the easy food, or rationalize killing people they don't like as "they're more valuable as food then they are alive." Governments could start to create crimes to have a convenient way to eliminate problematic people and turn them into a benefit. Given all the stories that China already forcibly harvests and sells organs from political prisoners, if the taboo against eating human flesh was removed they could easily turn that same mechanism into a means of eliminating all resistance while feeding their people. Frankly the U.S. could do it too, we already allow a form of slavery, even though it's not typically called that it's close enough for me, in the case of prison inmates and we imprison a shocking percentage of our population compared to other developed countries. And from there it's not a huge leap to deciding a previously minor crime is a now a major crime just to eliminate those who do it and get the reward of cheap meat, or making something that wasn't even a crime criminal towards the same end. (I can absolutely believe that there's politicians who would push for, for example, being a member of Antifa to be considered a serious crime and punishable by flesh-harvesting, or any number of other things. Once they're dead and eaten they can't protest you anymore, can they? And once the first proposal is made in an atmosphere where it won't be immediately rejected out of hand by everyone else, more will follow, and whichever side started it, the other side will be quick enough to follow. It'll be a new form of a war of attrition, which side's supporters can eat the other's faster?) That is why cannibalism should not be in any society's toolkit for any but civilization-ending disasters, in my opinion. It it's a matter of only a small percentage survives anyway it may not be as harmful, but otherwise it could create a very dark and dystopic path. And yes, I've spent far too much time thinking about this stuff and I'm not even sure why.

      lol who doesn't remove the green tint? just like we commonly remove the orange tint in NV, it saturates everything and makes the games look like utter crap. FO4 had a problem with color correction too. Bethesda should just... knock it off already, it doesn't look good.

    just pointing out the prions that are present in consumption of human flesh that would lead to kuru are only of the brain, not of other parts of the body - and even so african tribes who practice cannibalism as a ritual to their dead have developed a resistance to kuru and neuro-degenerative disorders.

    Anyone else notice this quest kinda mirrors Tenpenny Tower? Ghouls are considered monsters by many humans regardless of sentience. However, if you help the Ghouls peacefully, the leader doesn't hold his end of the bargain.
    The Family are Cannibals. Our revulsion towards them is very understandable. But Vance is trying to help give his kind meaning in a world that despises them. Vance is a "monster" who doesn't necessarily wish to live like one. That's why Ian is there. He simply wishes to make sense of what he is and how to live in this world.
    Vance is definitely pretentious, but I get the sense that his motives for helping others are sincere. He also keeps his word if the Lone Wanderer helps Vance to find an alternative to killing people in order to feed. He doesn't slaughter the residents of Arefu. He even sends one of his own to help guard the place.
    The Ghoul Leader of Tenpenny Tower shows he really is a monster. Vance proves he isn't.

    Ian still brutally murdered his parents. Even if things turned out ok between the family and Arefu, Ian should probably receive some sort of wasteland justice.

    You should do a video for Fiddler's Green Trailer Estates. Cool story on Ricky the Squirrel and what may appear to be a spy in the trailer park listening in on the nearby Fort Hagen

    Very good video, particularly impressed with the biology of cannibals and things. Something else about kuru was that women were likely to get it because they tended to eat the less ah choice meat of humans like the brain where the highest amount of prions were found
