    Joyce DiDonato and Antonio Pappano - at the piano rather than on the conductor’s podium - opened the 2014-15 season at London’s Wigmore Hall with a dazzling programme of song, emphasising Italy and the USA. Recorded live on this 2-CD set, the two artists were described by The Times as “mezzo diva supreme” and “golden maestro and piano accompanist to the stars”.

    That has to feel so good. It's like being in the night club in your mid twenties, & your song blasts through the speaker after you've had a couple of drinks, you think, "Oh SH*!, that's my song!" Then you make your way to the dance floor as the core of your being is cradled in the midst of seemingly ordered rhythmic mania. Yeah. I just love those last names together too, DiDonato Pappano.

    My Gosh I wish I'd discovered Joyce Didonato 7-8 years ago when she was singing all of this and the Venezia material, her voice is just brilliant and effervescent!!.

      +Kiki Hunziker Joyce's "birth" name is FLAHERTY -- she was born the 6th of a family of 7 children in an "Irish-American" family in Kansas City

      +Kiki Hunziker Joyce has also sung French songs and operas, but so far I haven't heard her sing German Lieder -- only the part of the Composer in Richard Strauss's Ariadne auf Naxos (and maybe a Schubert song somewhere(.

      2 years later, and Joyce has still not sung any German opera parts other than Octavian and the Composer, but some songs, certainly. Her German diction is amazing. In master classes I've attended, she's successfully helped students w/ their pronunciation. Her father was a voice teacher, by the way.

    These two work very well together. Both very energetic, both American background but wear that heritage lightly when they approach European works.

    I disagree with Joyce Didonato. These songs are nothing compared to Schubert. That's why I didn't go to the concert. Well performed though!

    • @GunvaldOttesen
      @GunvaldOttesen Před 8 lety +9

      +137Newton That's sort of not what she's saying though. What she means is that these songs are to them (people grown up and educated in America) what the Schubert-repertoire is to Europeans, in terms of "inheritage" and the context these songs were/are performed in.

    • @AlisonWAmes
      @AlisonWAmes Před 8 lety +2

      +137Newton I believe Joyce was referring to the OLDER American popular songs, like those by Irving Berlin and Rodgers & Hammerstein. She doesn't "DO", say, Justin Bieber crap -- but try asking her about ADELE!

    • @Beach_comber
      @Beach_comber Před 8 lety

      +Alison W Ames That's what I took her to mean. Justin Bieber is Canadian and Adele is English anyway. I'm sure they're nothing compared to Schubert either! Schubert songs are a minority interest in both England and America. I would have thought this minority would have similar views in each country about it being "their" heritage. Schubert never came to England either. Don't you think Irving Berlin is a simpler, more popular taste? He appeals to people in England who would struggle with Winterreise and have probably never heard of it.

      now, THAT would be amazing - her and Adele :)

      +137Newton No Britten fan in England could possibly feel this way. And, an Irish-American, adored Schubert long before i'd even heard of Britten. Every vocal recital i attended included him in the programme. PS: I do come from musical parents, but not Schubertians.
