  • Can you speak to girls in Japan? If you don't speak Japanese it's going to be very limiting. Today I'm challenging myself to speak Japanese and talk to girls in Harajuku. There is nothing really difficult in this video, anyone can attain this level of Japanese with some hard work. These Japanese girls in Harajuku were surprised, but pleased to chat with an American in Japanese. Would you try too?

      I have, and I like that you show the different slices of your life on Instagram as well. I really need to use Instagram more often, but I don't always tend to have time for those social media, and I just hate to miss out on those peaceful and harmonious slices you've shown me. I do like the interaction you do with random people on the streets, and would like to make the acquaintance of various people too. If only I had the chance and skills.

My method of striking up conversation in Japan as an introvert was carrying around or placing in front of me a sign that says something like アメリカ人の旅行者 話しかけてください ("American traveler - please talk to me") in places that aren't too crowded (consider the bystander effect). It worked a few times and got me some beer, food, 1000 yen (!?), and a karaoke session. :)

      I think this is a big problem for many people. We are unable to see how great we really are and we love to put outselves down.
      When we actually try to do the things we want to do it turns out to be much easier as we thought it would be. We have a collective confidence issue for sure.

Rejecting someone directly or saying "no" are traits you won't see in Japanese people. It takes a while to pick up on their nonverbal communication. If you're just asking someone for directions or something most people sincerely want to help I would say.

    Most of the people will keep answering your questions because they can not express they don't want to speak. Also, most of the people is busy with something. Thats wht I think speaking with people is not bad, but it is to retain them for a long time.

As someone that has been socially awkward all my life, introvert, etc, I have to say that being social is not difficult, you just got to practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, practice. You know what, I think it's easier to start a conversation with strangers that speak a language you want to learn. They are more opened to take the time and to help you.
      I am belgian, french as mother tongue, have learned a bit of german and curently learning japanese, good level in english but unfortunately I don't have enough opportunities to practice my speaking skills.
      If you really want to speak with strangers that won't judge you, and you are shy or scared (like me), try with different people and practice with the same scenario every time.
      It can be stupid things like asking the way to a cinema, a shop, a train station, a restaurant. Even if you don't go there, ask people the same question just to get used to and have an ego boost. :-)
      Sorry about my english, but I try myself to improve my skills this way and I enjoy it more and more.
      My ultimate goal is to speak enough japanese to visit the country and be comfortable enough to have small talk with people. :-)

      @a1nelson Před 3 lety +5

      If a language learner politely approached you in your native language, would you consider them a freak and reject them? I seriously doubt it. I am willing to bet that you would appreciate their efforts to learn your language and treat them with respect. Obviously, this works both ways, most of the time. Most of the people you might like to communicate with will give you the same respect. They might not always have the time, energy, interest, etc. to have a long conversation, but they probably won’t leave you completely hanging. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still a challenge sometimes. When I get into more difficult language situations, I try to stop and remind myself of the above. It gives me the confidence to push beyond the fear. Best of luck on your language journey.
