When Sci-Fi had great shows and a better logo and name. The jump from the Parental Discretion bumper to the Odor Eaters was hilarious.

I got intrigued by that JCPenney commercial that starts at 3:26 - the one where you were supposed to count the number of tops featured to win the Jeep - after seeing the very conspicuous number on the guy's jersey (41). Turns out that's the exact number of tops in the contest, too. I guess they threw that in as an easter egg to see who would figure it out.

That full moon rising promo, my first thought was "Hey, its Weyoun from DS9!!!" It is also cool seeing what looks like 1995's equivalent of a modern iPad. Also that personalized TV channel through the computer sounds a lot like CZcams, it makes for a nice situational irony.

I didn't get Sci-Fi till around the beginning of 1998, but it was as still as good as it was even in 1995.

    Soloflex. Bowflex. WE GET IT
    LOL Reactive Mind
AKIRA on cable TV was a big deal. Then Sci Fi did Saturday Anime, it was cut and hacked to all heck but I didn't miss it every week.

It was around this time that I discovered anime, and it was largely thanks to the Sci-Fi Channel. I remember every summer they would do a special anime week with a different movie each night, like Akira. I also remember their Saturday Anime program on Saturday mornings. This was also around the time that Sailor Moon premiered in syndication, which I also watched each morning. I was a budding otaku for sure.

When I was little I wanted that Vienetta ice cream cake thing so bad.. It was probably terrible but it looked amazing in the commercials. Also, good god the Soloflex commercials were obnoxious.

Yeah, the Dianetics commercial would fit right in with parody commercials from Grand Theft Auto. The opening line even reminds me of Ultimate Disc in the Dark commercial from GTA San Andreas.
"When life becomes a battleground your mind is your best weapon"
"In darkness you only have your nocturnal instincts to rely on"

CNet Central-miss that block of shows..(this was before TechTV/G4 came along. "The New Edge" was one of the first known on-camera appearances of Ryan Seacrest))
Full Moon Rising-Charles,i want a Trancers revival-Tim Thomerson not getting any younger
Akira-after how Ghost In The Shell bombed,Hollywood hopefully is having second thoughts about attempting a live-action version of this
Silent Running-I'd like to think that Dewey is still out there, watering those plants.. :(

I'll admit, its kinda weird to have an ad roll in these things solely to namedrop a website - let alone one that still works (even if its just a hub for...well, SyFy) but I guess by 1995 while its not as commonplace as it would be a few years later, some companies were already eager to go hot on the heels of this trend that absolutely never continued on after the 90's and went the way of so many other fads before and since. Yup. ;)

The Scientologists say that the whole dropping the souls into the volcano thing is not what they actually believe to outsiders. If that's true (and I know it isn't) why the hell is there a CGI volcano in a Dianetics commercial?

    • @80sCommercialVault
      @80sCommercialVault  Před 7 lety +4

This commercial from 1986 also features a volcano on the cover: czcams.com/video/AqbOB5It16E/video.htmlm31s I made a similar observation in the description there.
It's possible that for the layperson, the volcano imagery is meant to represent an eruption of the mind, as Dianetics/Scientology sells itself as a self-help guide designed to untap the potential of the human brain by removing subconscious barriers through pseudoscience. But Hubbard and the people in the higher ranks of Scientology obviously knew what the volcano was all about. Also, keep in mind this was recorded a decade before South Park made all of the Lord Xenu/Thetan crap known to the general public.
